A new take on Predator is coming to PS4. At yesterday's PlayStation State of Play, we learned that IllFonic, the studio behind Friday the 13th, is working on Predator: Hunting Grounds. Due out in 2020, the game is still in early development, but we know that it will be a competitive, online multiplayer experience. And it's being created by a team of Predator fans, loyal to the 1987 film and subsequent takes on the Predator universe.

'Friday the 13th' publisher cancels DLC due to movie lawsuit

Last year's Friday the 13th is a fun spin on the Jason Voorhees saga and the struggle of teens at Camp Crystal Lake to survive his onslaught. Fans had been looking forward to new features, but they'll have to remain content with the game's current state indefinitely. That's because publisher Gun Media was left with no choice but to cancel all future DLC and content updates -- all due to a copyright fight over the Friday the 13th movies.

  • Revival talks about death, decoration, and defenses

You remember Revival, right? You know, the game funding its development by selling in-game houses? That one. The developers haven't been quiet over the holiday season, with several recent blog posts detailing the high-end concepts behind several of the game's key mechanics -- for example, dying, which doesn't simply leave you to run back to your corpse but forces you to traverse the spirit realm, fighting off malicious spirits and seeking the Mortality Gate to drag yourself back from the dead. Of course, you can stay alive longer by making use of combat mechanics like the shield wall to defend yourself from dying. You can also use your continued "being alive" status to take advantage of the decoration kits available for housing, which allow you to convert existing rooms with certain fixtures to more functional equivalents. It's all interesting stuff and worth considering if you're sorely tempted to drop a bunch of money on the promise of virtual real estate.

  • Revival launches its site, aims to sell houses for cash

Revival has just opened the doors to its official site, and it's a sandbox online game with skill-based progression. Or it will be, at least. Contrary to what you would expect from that description in the first sentence, though, there is not a Kickstarter to link to. Instead, the game is planning to help fund itself by selling houses. In-game houses. For real-world cash, right upfront, before the game is out and in the live world. According to the official site, the rationale is that real estate in the game world is limited, and rather than have generic housing templates, every house has pre-determined architecture and layout to properly fit with the world as a whole. You will also be able to buy ships and take part in sailing, again for real-world money. It's the designer's alternative to ever running any sort of Kickstarter or other crowdfunding campaign; whether or not it seems like a sound investment is up to the potential players. [Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]

Lovecraft-inspired Revival's recent reveal caught our attention with its promises to "revive the MMORPG" by way of a gorgeous sandbox. Developer IllFonic went on record stating, "It's a genre that has a bad name. There are hardcore fans in the genre, but there's no reason why the whole world shouldn't be playing this genre. The genre has been locked out with a bad taste for a decade. It's time to rethink it, go back to the drawing board, start from scratch and tell everyone that an MMO isn't a stat-chasing, quest-ignoring snorefest." Music to sandbox fans' ears! Naturally, we were keen to hear more, so we spoke with IllFonic Creative Director Kedhrin Gonzalez and surprisingly received very few "we can't talk about that yet" responses. Just remember as you make your way through our interview: A lot can change between the prototype and final release version, so don't unbridle your skepticism just yet.

The aftershock of THQ's dissolution continues, as servers for the Xbox 360 version of Nexuiz have been shut down. Developer Illfonic announced the news on its Facebook page, noting that the servers were being run by THQ and "cannot be maintained anymore." The PC servers, however, will remain online courtesy of Illfonic itself.Nexuiz is currently slated to be sold off in an upcoming auction of more THQ properties this April, alongside the likes of Darksiders, Homeworld and Red Faction.

Nexuiz, an arena-based product of Illfonic and THQ Partners, is in limbo following THQ's bankruptcy and assets sale, during which the Partners brand was not sold."Our deal with THQ was basically a licensing deal through THQ Partners, so we do have a period of time [in which] THQ has the rights to be the exclusive publisher," Illfonic president Chuck Brungardt tells Polygon. "Now with them folding we are still trying to figure out what this means and awaiting details from our contacts handling the transitions at THQ."Brungardt says it will probably take another month to figure out the future of Nexuiz and the remaining THQ assets. Nexuiz is lumped in with THQ Partners, the Darksiders franchise, Vigil Games and other back catalog properties that former THQ president Jason Rubin said will be sold off in a separate process.

From now until 4 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow afternoon, the CryEngine 3-powered, IllFonic-developed FPS Nexuiz will be free to play for anyone with Steam and a Windows machine capable of running things powered by CryEngine 3. If the game tickles your fancy during that brief period of care/money-free play time, it can be permanently purchased for $2.50 during the next 40 or so hours.Look, just because we found Nexuiz a little bland doesn't mean we're going to stop you from getting a good deal on it. We're not monsters. Well, Gorthax in accounting is a monster, but he doesn't bring it up and neither do we and everyone gets along fine and no one gets eaten.

It's circa 1999, and I'm in my freshman college dorm room, playing a game on my Windows 98 computer. It uses a clunky CRT monitor that takes up most of my desk, but on that monitor a series of images flashes by -- walls, a floor, a skybox overhead, more walls, more floors. Quickly, there's a flash of an colorful icon on the screen, and in first-person view I bound towards it. Just as I grab the quad-damage and jump off a cliff, an opponent appears in my peripheral. While falling through the air, I instantly move my mouse around just so, click the button, and my rocket lands perfectly alongside the enemy avatar, bursting it into a spray of gory red pixels. A real-life cry of anguish is heard from down the hall, where my floormate has just had to click to respawn. I smile, and run off to look for more prey. That's the feeling that made playing Quake 2 so magical back in the day, and Nexuiz is a direct descendant of that line. It was originally an open source shooter based off of the Quake engine, and developer IllFonic has now remade the game in CryEngine 3, set for release on Xbox Live Arcade next month. And though the Microsoft booth at CES 2012 is a long way away from my dorm room in both space and time, just a few minutes of gameplay pointed me right back to that formative experience. %Gallery-97412%

  • THQ listed as Nexuiz publisher [update: it won't be Capcom]

It looks like grassroots-turned-XBLA/PSN CryEngine 3 arena shooter Nexuiz has found itself a publisher, bringing it one step closer to meeting the winter 2011 release window originally slated for the title. According to an Australian Classification Board filing, Capcom has landed the gig of bringing multiplayer mayhem to American living rooms, while its international publishing partner THQ will handle the legwork in the land down under. Update: It seems THQ may be the publisher after all. Capcom USA told Joystiq this was an error in the listing. "Capcom does work with THQ Australia on a number of our titles, so this may have just been an easy mistake. We are not working on this." We're told THQ Australia is working to correct the information. We still don't know any release date or pricing information, but ratings filings are usually a good indication of logistical specifics in our near future.

Sometimes a story comes along that's so odd it actually short-circuits the part of the Joystiq Hive Mind that's supposed to make fun of stuff. We've attacked Ghetto Golf, a thugged-out mix of street golfing and guns that's in need of a publisher, from every angle, but we're just not up to the task of being more entertaining or compelling than the news itself. So we'll give it to you straight.Ghetto Golf is a planned downloadable tile being created by Illfonic, a game studio founded by one of the guys from Tony! Toni! Tone! Also, this line is in MTV Multiplayer's article about the game: "One of the playable scenes they showed involved the hero Vonte needing to use his exploding golf ball to blow up a car that someone was ghost-riding."... Honestly, what are we supposed to do with that?
