Area 5's newest project is a documentary-style series called Outerlands. The group of filmmakers are taking to Kickstarter to fund the first six-episode season of the show, requesting $210,000 by February 15 to produce it. The team has already raised over $25,000 towards its goal. While Outerlands is vaguely about the "people and culture of videogames," the project's Kickstarter pitch video hints at the numerous topics Area 5 plans to cover, such as game preservation and e-sports. The team has stretch goals that start at $300,000 and reach $1 million, some of which will provide funding for additional freelance artists and musicians like Fez creators and composers Phil Fish and Disasterpeace as well as Sound Shapes composer Jim Guthrie. Formed in 2009, Area 5 comprises five former 1Up Show staffers, who created the I Am Street Fighter and Grounded: Making The Last of Us documentaries.

Trenched dug into our hearts and scooped out a big glob of love this summer, and it looks like the team at Double Fine are ready to take it to the next level. Matt Chandronait said he's playing some new Trenched content that he can't talk about, but that's "going to be awesome," on Rebel FM's Episode 108 (57:30). Double Fine has yet to make any official announcements, but we've reached out for confirmation on what this surprise content could be -- DLC, a Games for Windows or Windows Phone 7 version, or a life-sized trench equipped with a Sassy Basket grenade launcher and sailor hat. Update: The Rebel FM podcast is undergoing construction to remove Chandronait's remarks about Trenched content, but as we've already asked Double Fine for clarification, we're going to leave this story right here. Update 2: Double Fine responded with a more eloquent form of "No comment," adding, "We hope to have more to say in the near future."
