  • WoW Archivist: One night of payback in 2006

WoW Archivist explores the secrets of World of Warcraft's past. What did the game look like years ago? Who is etched into WoW's history? What secrets does the game still hold? An interesting aspect of the ongoing Ashran faction hub debate is the fear people express that their hubs will be raided by enemy players, since the new hubs are adjacent to a PvP zone. Blizzard pointed out that the hubs will be better defended by NPCs than the Shrines are now -- and the Shrines currently see few serious attacks on live realms, despite their close proximity. On most realms today, little large-scale world PvP occurs, and even fewer faction raids. Faction raids were once a huge part of the game, even on PvE realms. You couldn't kill opposing players on PvE realms if they didn't want to be killed, but you could deny them their questgivers, flightmasters, and other crucial NPCs. And we did that, on both sides, throughout classic WoW. Easy targets like the Crossroads, Astranaar, Grom'gol, and Refuge Pointe were raided almost daily. If your faction was heavily outnumbered, like mine was on Khadgar-US back then, it could be infuriating. We had our small victories at times, as I covered in my first Archivist column. But many days, all we could do was stand by and watch as the Alliance occupied our towns for hours at a time and took away our ability to level effectively. On our first anniversary in 2006, my guild set out for some payback. Today I'd like to share that tale of classic world PvP, from the era when faction raids were serious business.

  • Cataclysm Zone Review: Wetlands

This article has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages. Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion. Read at your own risk! Looks like the Wetlands just got a little wetter. (What the -- who took my sunglasses?!) The swamplands of Khaz Modan have gotten some updates -- some for the better, some for the worse, and some for the downright awesome. Dun Algaz The familiar twisting tunnels leading from Loch Modan to the Wetlands have remained intact, including the halfway-point town of Dun Algaz, still overrun by the Dragonmaw. Like many areas that haven't changed a whole lot, the questing here has been changed up slightly but mostly made shorter. In this case, your objective is retrieving some precious cargo -- and if you didn't guess alcohol was involved, you've forgotten that you're in dwarf country.

Welcome to another episode edition of Ask a Beta Tester! Just a few more days until Wrath. Are you excited? I'm excited. I'm so excited that I don't think I'm going to answer any questions today, and instead slam my face on my keyboard in joy and post that to our main page instead. At least that's what I would do if I didn't want to write for WoW Insider anymore. I'll behave, I promise!adoure asked...I want to start on my Kalu'ak rep to get the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole asap, which starting zone will offer more quests from the Kalu'ak?Both the Howling Fjord and the Borean Tundra have a pretty hefty number of quests from the Kalu'ak, but Borean Tundra comes out ahead with 2-3 more quests than the Fjord, and the rep gains are a bit higher because some of the Fjord's Kalu'ak quests are just FedEx quests, taking an item across town or whatever. So you'll want to go Tundra if that Fishing Pole is your top priority.

  • Around Azeroth: We're not worried

No, we're not worried about the impending flood of Death Knights at all. We're sure everything will be fine (though we still advise everyone lock their doors at night and beware undead bearing gifts). However, if we walked up to the Menethil docks and found this crew waiting... well, we might suddenly remember that we left the oven on or perhaps that our cat was on fire. Reader Dan sent us this image straight from the Wrath of the Lich King beta -- and we'd love to have your beta screenshots, too! If you have anything our readers might like, sharing it is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. And, please, no more sunsets!%Gallery-1816%

  • WoTLK Friends and Family Alpha Patch Notes leaked

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/Wrath_of_the_Lich_King_Alpha_patch_notes_leaked'; MMO-Champion has just posted what appears to be the patch notes for the WoTLK Friends and Family Alpha. This is an unconfirmed leak, but everything on them would appear to check out as legitimate. They're pretty barebones, but there's some intriguing information to be found: Death Knights are playable, although the starting quests and talents are not complete. Spells and Talents past 70 are available for the Druid, Mage, Priest, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior classes You can head to Northrend via Menethil Harbor and Theramore for the Alliance, or Undercity and Ogrimmar for the Horde The Howling Fjord, Borean Tundra, Grizzly Hills, and Dragonblight are the zones currently open for testing. Utgarde Keep, Utgarde Pinnacle, The Nexus, and Drak'tharon Keep are currently available for testing. If they already have talents for quite a few classes past 70, it would seem to suggest that they are further along on the expansion then we think. Hopefully, if these patch notes ring true, we'll hear about those talents soon. You can read the full Patch notes behind the jump.

This week's page marks a milestone in the story: the Naga threat has become real, as Kat soon finds out. The events set in motion by today's page will forever alter Kat's life and ultimately change her destiny. How will this all unfold? Time will tell, but there's a good chance you'll find out if you keep reading.I should warn everyone though -- there is a violent scene in one of today's panels, so read it at your own caution. Ah, the rain has finally stopped in Menethil, and the sun has dawned on a new day. Our heroine is left to ponder the events of the previous night, and ultimately decides to report it -- after all, you don't mess around when it comes to Naga. This page also introduces a new character to the story: Byron, one of the sentries of Menethil and a friend of our heroine. Welcome back! I have the next page in the tale ready for you to enjoy! I really like the art in this one -- I played around with a different style of lighting that I think lends itself well to this scene, and I think you'll like it.The story continues this week as we follow our new rain-soaked friend into her makeshift home on the docks of Menethil Harbor. Unfortunately, her abandoned warehouse may hide more than it appears... click the gallery below to view the new page and find out!%Gallery-11275%

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their supportive comments of last week's premiere. I hope that this series will live up to everyone's high expectations! I'll certainly do my best to try. This week's page is the start of the first official tale in the series, and opens with a view that is hopefully familiar but different than you remember. Considering where I want this story to go, it was necessary to expand the location a bit, but I think you'll enjoy the change. As usual, click the gallery below to check out the new page, or start from the beginning to refresh your memory!%Gallery-11275%

  • Around Azeroth: Menethil sunset

Reader Mike sends in this amazing shot of Menethil Harbor right around sunset. I'm always a bit fascinated by how the sky manages to have a unique look in every zone of the game, and each zone with its own unique sunset. Menethil, as you see, has this purple tinge, and the sun itself is a burst of white light. Does the sunset in the Barrens look like this? I think not!So do you have a unique shot of Azeroth that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? Tell us about it by e-mailing aroundazeroth@gmail.com! You can attach a picture file or send us a link to one -- and don't worry about formatting, we'll take care of that part.
