  • UK takes Metro Redux to the top of the charts

Metro Redux - we can't believe they didn't go with Metro Revival - is the new UK No. 1 this week, overthrowing Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition after one week of glory. Meanwhile, Madden NFL 15 debuts 6th, which isn't bad given which version of football it is. The PS4, Xbox One and PC bundle of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light is Deep Silver's first No. 1 of the year, but it's far from the first remaster to lead the way in 2014. Upgraded and enhanced versions of Tomb Raider, Diablo 3 and The Last of Us had already scored five chart-topping weeks between them before Metro Redux came along, and we could see a few other remasters at the top before the year's close. In honor of the remasters, we're going to re-release our idea of music videos below the break for these posts. This week and with Metro in mind, we'll keep it Russian with 2000s duo t.A.T.u, who infamously caused great controversy with their awful capitalization.

  • Next game from Metro series developer 'less linear, more sandbox'

The next game from Metro 2033 developer 4A Games will shift away from a linear progression and offer players a more freeform approach to gameplay, studio CTO Oles Shishkovstov told Eurogamer this week. "For the game we are working on now, our designers have shifted to a more sand-box-style experience - less linear but still hugely story-driven," Shishkovstov said. "I will not go into details, but it requires some work from programmers as well. Also, we are improving graphics in very different aspects, like recently we did a physically-based global ambient occlusion (instead of local, like SSAO). I will not talk about PBR (physically-based rendering) here, because here we are at the stage when artists are still adapting their mentality to it." Shishkovstov did not reveal whether the undisclosed project is a new entry in the studio's Metro series. Sneaking over irradiated pools of stagnant water in 2033 Moscow, the left bumper is what you press to wipe grime off your gas mask. One careful wipe might help you see a fallen scavenger ripe with spare ammunition. Another might have your vision obscured just long enough for a giant, mutated pig bear to run up and eat you. Metro Redux brings remastered, post-apocalyptic Moscow to North America on August 26, and Europe on August 29. Described as a "true director's cut" of Metro 2033 and its sequel Metro: Last Light, the 2-in-1 package will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The boxed compilation is priced $50, and both games will be available individually to download at $25 a pop. Linux and SteamOS versions are due to release later this year. Amongst all the gameplay tweaks and additions, Metro Redux is headlined by a reworking of Metro 2033 in the 4A Engine iteration used for Last Light. Dev 4A Games has given Last Light a visual touch-up too, while all the game's Season Pass content is included in Redux. Developer 4A Games has released a series of brief teaser videos showcasing a PlayStation 4 entry in its Metro first-person shooter series running at 60 frames-per-second. 4A confirmed in March that its Metro series would debut for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the upcoming Metro Redux. Fans speculate that today's footage shows both Metro 2033 and its sequel Metro: Last Light running on the same gameplay engine. A third teaser video is available here. While a release date for Metro Redux has not been announced, comments from 4A suggest that the game may arrive quite soon. "Are you ready?" the developer asks. "Because we really, nearly are..." 4A Games, the development house behind Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, is opening a new studio in Malta. While the team's home in Ukraine's capital Kiev will remain open, the new Malta studio will act as the team's headquarters going forward, headed up by Andrew Prokhorov, 4A co-founder and creative director, as well as Oles Shishkovstov, 4A's chief technical officer. "By basing our new headquarters in Malta, a member state of the EU, 4A Games will be able to better compete on the international stage," said Dean Sharpe, 4A Games' newly appointed CEO, in a statement on the studio's website. "Malta offers fantastic incentives for game development, and we are confident 4A Games will be able to attract the very best talent from Ukraine, Malta and beyond." 4A Games has a tumultuous history. Since opening in 2005, the team has struggled with meager resources and poor facilities in Kiev, but it won notoriety with its debut in 2010, the narratively rich PC and Xbox 360-exclusive Metro 2033. Follow up Metro: Last Light, meanwhile, was in danger of not seeing release due to publisher THQ dissolving in 2013. Despite those hurdles, Deep Silver published Last Light and was met with strong sales and positive reviews.

A North American release for the package has not been confirmed. According to Amazon's product page, the Game of the Century version of Saints Row 4 will bundle last year's game with all subsequently released DLC and Season Pass content, including the Enter The Dominatrix and How the Saints Save Christmas mission packs. Also included are a variety of ability upgrades, vehicles, and weapon packs, such as the Stone Age DLC and the GameStop contest-winning Polarizer. Other recent lifelower discoveries include a Complete Edition of Metro: Last Light and a Dead Island Double Pack, neither of which have been officially announced. [Update: A Deep Silver representative confirmed the upcoming Game of the Century release with Shacknews, but notes that it's only scheduled for release in Europe at this time. Metro Redux for next-gen consoles has been confirmed by publisher Deep Silver, following a leak this morning on an Italian forum reported by AllGamesBeta, but the publisher did make a few addendums to the admission. "What you saw leaked was taken from an old, internal planning presentation, containing some nuggets of truth but a lot of hypothetical ideas and place holder material," publisher Deep Silver said in a statement. "And we think the reality is a lot more exciting than the out-dated material that got leaked shows, and we're itching to share it with you. Just not yet." Deep Silver plans to share details about the 4A Games developed title "this side of E3." [Image: AllGamesBeta]

  • PS Plus in February: Outlast, Metro: Last Light, Payday 2

It's memories, robberies, and underground monstrosities for PlayStation Plus subscribers next month, with February's line-up featuring Remember Me, Payday 2, and Metro: Last Light. As for Vita, it's the cutesy karts of Modnation Racers: Road Trip, and the less cutesy cross-beats of Street Fighter X Tekken. No, Plus hasn't forgotten about the PS4, silly billy. Sony's newest console is getting asylum horror Outlast on Plus next month, but we already knew that. The real question is when: PlayStation UK's website says next week on February 5, so going by PSN traditions that'd mean a February 4 showing in North America. We'll find out for sure soon enough. Looking at the PS3 games specifically, we'd recommend checking out the "suffocating despair" of shooter sequel Metro: Last Light - no really, it's fun! - and the heist-em-up capers of Payday 2 if you haven't already have. As for Remember Me? Well, if you like neo-action games full of neo-jargon, then sure - but maybe read Ludwig's neo-review first.

February. The month of Valentine's Day. It conjures images of chocolate, flowers, Hallmark cards and, if you're a PlayStation Plus member living in Europe, a lot of pants-wetting terror. Sony has revealed the February freebies for Europe's PS Plus members, and if it's scares and depression you're looking for on V-Day - and really, who isn't - Sony has you covered. PS3 owners have two paths toward depression: They can take to the skies and visit 1912's most famous flying city, Columbia, in BioShock Infinite, or hop aboard the monster-ridden metro in Metro: Last Light. Vita owners have a decidedly more light-hearted journey ahead, as they'll have both Dynasty Warriors Next and ModNation Racers: Road Trip available to play. Lastly, PS4 owners will get their chance to explore Mount Massive Asylum as journalist and all-around unlucky fellow Miles Upshur in Outlast. It should be noted however that Outlast will not be available in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, India or Turkey, and the game is still awaiting classification by German and Australian ratings boards.

Team Joystiq has concluded its selection of last year's best games. Click here to see the complete assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs - until next year! The Wonderful 101 The boundless, ALL-CAPS exuberance of The Wonderful 101 may have been misread by its intended audience. Overseen by Mr. Devil May Cry himself, Hideki Kimaya, this vibrant action game conveys cuteness in its army of stout superheroes, but poses creative and razor-sharp challenges without taking a breath. The game's cartoonish antics and enormous bosses are beyond ridiculous, dwarfing the mechanical cleverness that lies beneath it all. The real novelty lies in drawing shapes and having your heroes congeal into corresponding mega-swords and huge hammers (also: puddings). It becomes a practiced analogue shorthand, not unlike your maneuvers in a fighting game, and the hard-earned rewards satisfy in much the same way.

If you're a PC gamer looking forward to Friday's release of Batman: Arkham Origins and have yet to scoop up the previous two entries in the series, now might be a good time to do so, as they're 75 percent off on Steam until Monday, 10 am Pacific. That makes Batman: Arkham Asylum just $5.00, and Batman: Arkham City just $7.50. Both versions are Game of the Year editions, meaning even more batarang for your buck. Not a bat-fan? Amazon has unearthed savings on Tomb Raider and Metro: Last Light, which are both on sale for $19.99 through the week, while Best Buy is helping aspiring gamer musicians get into the groove by taking $50 off the cost of any electric guitar when you buy Rocksmith 2014. Lots of good things on sale, stranger.

Attention passengers: We are arriving at "Chronicles Pack," the last stop on the Metro: Last Light downloadable content line. The fourth and final piece of DLC includes three solo missions filling in side stories that run parallel to the game's main tale. The pack also includes the "multi barrelled bicycle shotgun," a fan-created weapon that 4A Games was impressed by enough to toss in the game. The Chronicles Pack is priced at the reasonable round-trip ticket price of $4.99. It's also part of the Metro season pass, which now includes all four pieces of DLC immediately available for $15.

The Developer Pack will be free for Season Pass holders, or $3.99, £3.19 and €3.99 on its own.
