The fine purveyors of DRM-free classics at GoG.com have announced an agreement with Ubisoft, which sees good old(ish) games like Beyond Good & Evil and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time added to the downloadable lineup. Joining action journalist Jade and the time-swindling prince are ... the aeroplanes of IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946! We guess they weren't really going for much of a theme outside of all three costing $9.99 each.Other Ubisoft titles slated to hit the PC service "in the coming weeks" include Heroes of Might and Magic, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and Not Tom Clancy's Far Cry.

Sources close to CVG have said that Ubisoft is poised to announce new installments of its popular Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six franchises later this year. According to the source Ubisoft, which released Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in March 2008 and has had Ghost Recon on the shelf since mid 2007, could have both titles ready for the 2009 holiday rush. Unfortunately details for either title are scarce but the general school of thought is both franchises would see a reboot away from current story lines and settings. So, the rumor is Ubi is hitting up new a Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six? In other news the sky is blue and the sun is hot.

  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2 getting free multiplayer maps in July

Despite vowing to "never go back to Vegas," Ubisoft is still more than willing to expand the gambler's paradise from afar via downloadable content. Terrorists vs. bandits (some one-armed, others well-armed) showdown, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, will be getting a free "Fan Pack" on Xbox Live, PSN and Ubisoft's website in July, sure to bring a smile to the two million or so people who purchased the game. The download not only adds three new maps -- the re-lit "Murdertown" and "CQB Training," as well as "Calypso Casino" -- but new multiplayer ranks and several tweaks to weapons, gadgets and other aspects of the game. Read up on all the changes over at the official site. [Thanks, MisfitToy]

  • Battlefield: Bad Company trailers parody Gears of War, Rainbow Six

In the immortal words of Matthew Wilder, it looks like EA isn't letting some early bad press for Battlefield: Bad Company break-a their stride. We've seen a veritable gaggle of promotional material for the controversial title as of late, including two recent trailers which clown on some other popular shooters. The first of which, seen above, parodies the unforgettable Gears of War trailer, and features an unnamed infantryman butchering Gary Jules' cover of the Tears for Fears classic downer "Mad World". The other (available after the break) somewhat mocks Rainbow Six's stealth tactics. It's not exactly uncharted territory, but we can always appreciate such Yankovician displays of friendly competition between developers.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Ubisoft gives us a new countdown [Update 3]

Update 3: It seems that as every hour progresses the timer (above the five decoded files) adds another hour to the countdown. Stay tuned until we get a confirmation on what exactly is happening.Update 2: The timer now states the countdown will end at 5:50PM EST.Update: Apparently the decrypter on the Ghost Recon site went on a lunch break. The new countdown, set to expire at 1:50PM, has just added an additional 2 hours. The new countdown now ends at 3:50PM EST.Last week we reported an interesting development occurring across all of Ubisoft's Tom Clancy branded websites. First, a flash overlay of a smoking dossier (or black box) appeared over the official Ghost Recon website that provided users with no functions or information. The next morning a menu appeared allowing site visitors to click into an alternate reality game called MACSAT7 Recovery which expanded the flash window and revealed five audio and video files in the early stages of decoding. Soon reports flew in that other overlays, with what appeared to be wreckage from a downed helicopter, began appearing on the official sites for Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and the upcoming End War that all pointed to the original Ghost Recon site. After carefully conducting mathematics we realized that each of the five files were counting down to the date and time they would be decrypted, and thus available to analyze for information, but we also noticed an overall timer that was counting down to around noon on April 2. Moments ago the ARG came to an end and we were surprised to see a new countdown has emerged for 1:50PM 3:50PM EST.Could this be the rumored Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 3, which is said to end the trilogy's stay in Mexico, or the highly expected Firehawk? Only time will tell.

  • Ubisoft preps for a Tom Clancy-themed MMO

    03.20.2008

Not less that two hours ago we were discussing the ways that FPSes have co-opted the trappings of MMOs, and now this. Ubisoft has announced that, as part of an IP-purchasing deal with spy-genre mogul Tom Clancy, they'll be working to create an MMO based on his works. We're just guessing what the gameplay might be like above, but company CEO Yves Guillemot seems determined to get one out the door. The game isn't even in the works yet, as Ubisoft has little experience in the post-WoW MMO marketplace, but Yves thinks they already have the technology in-hand to make the game. He also noted the abundance of options they have as regards setting: "You have Splinter Cell, Sam Fisher, the Rainbow [Sixes], the GRAWs and all the other new creations we have. So this [IP acquisition] will make that [MMO] product a really big product." This was apparently a foregone conclusion from some time ago, according to Yves. They were merely waiting for the right opportunity to jump in. It getting a might crowded out here for anyone else?

We admit it. Our Rainbow Six Vegas 2 coverage has been lacking a bit, so when we came across a brand new Thermal Scanning video today we felt obligated to share. So, embedded above is the latest video, showcasing some hot RSV2 thermal scanning, shooting, covering, dodging and dancing (all minus the dancing). In all honesty though, team Ubisoft looks to have polished and built upon Rainbow Six Vegas adding a few new bells and whistles that makes Vegas 2 shine. But if a few additions and tweaks doesn't constitute a full fledged sequel in your mind, well then good sir, RSV2 may not be your bag. To us, it's a solid enough looking shooter and we may just have to jump in next Friday to pew, pew, pew some baddies.

Today Major League Gaming (MLG), the professional videogame league, announced that it would be collaborating with Ubisoft on the development of the upcoming Rainbow Six Vegas 2. R6V2, which marks the 10th Anniversary of the Rainbow Six franchise, features an "MLG Map" which depicts an MLG event at the Las Vegas Convention Center. MLG and Ubi Soft worked closely on the development of the map which was designed with competitive gaming in mind, wonder why that is.With news of the new map comes word that MLG will include Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in its 2008 Pro Circuit, including a special release event for the game in April. The MLG Pro Circuit 2008 kicks off on April 11 and will be covered by ESPN.com. Hopefully that means we'll be able to catch reruns of the event on ESPN 8: The Ocho.%Gallery-16873%

  • Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 trailer shows off new weapons

One of our favorite things about Rainbow Six: Vegas was the multitude of weapons a player could choose from while outfitting their digital soldier. With varying levels of kickback, damage, ammo capacity, and accuracy, each weapon felt like a unique character, and diehard followings sprung up behind many of the game's realistic firearms. The above trailer shows a few new "characters" we'll be introduced to in Rainbow Six: Vegas 2; like Mr. Shoots Through Walls, SMG Jr., and a sniper rifle that's bigger than the Juno I satellite launcher. We'll get to meet the whole gang (as will a number of unlucky terrorists) when the game lands in our anticipatory hands come mid-March.

The second Developer Diary for the last entry in the Rainbow Six Vegas sub-series released today. This one addresses the topics of Multi-Player and Co-op, dropping nuggets such as drop-in-drop-out co-op and a story explanation for the Co-op players a la Halo 3 (1P is the Master Chief/Bishop, 2P is the Arbiter/Knight). The main of the interview is a voiceover from the Lead Multi-Player Designer, Jason Cambiotti, and he goes over the bullet points for us. He mentions the PEC system of character creation, which was talked about in a previous Dev Diary, and will be similar class-wise to the COD4 system. This video also shows off Vegas' new competitive multilayer modes: Demolition, which is similar to Assault and Team Leader which is similar to VIP. The rest is about revisions to the Territories-like Total Conquest mode, and the Matchmaking system which will (supposedly) be improved, with games easier to create, find, and join. The first game was well received, so hopefully Ubisoft will be able to build on the success of the first game and shoot for the top of the Xbox Live most-played charts.

It looks like what happens in Vegas really will stay in Vegas, as Ubisoft designer Philippe Therien recently told Eurogamer that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will mark the last entry in the series to be set in the city. "We really feel that the story of Vegas is done. We've explored as much of Vegas as we wanted. For now, we're pretty much covered with Vegas," said Therien. Therien added that having Rainbow Six focus on a single city worked well, but that the team is unsure if future installments will be based on a similar concept. So, if you want more Vegas, your last shot hits shelves on March 21. Next stop, Rainbow Six Stringtown.[Via Joystiq]

Don't expect a Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 3 anytime soon. Speaking to Eurogamer, designer Philippe Therien said, "We will never go back to Vegas - at least, not in the foreseeable future." So much for the "rescue four hooker witnesses from a back alley full of out-of-town drunkards" mission we've been dying to play.Therien also noted that, although the single location worked well for the story of the previous two games, he's not sure if they'll return to that format for the next Rainbow Six installment. (Make no mistake, no one expects this to be the last Rainbow Six title.) The glamorous, time-paradoxical Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is due out March 21.

Eurogamer reports that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will be shooting up casinos and terrorists before you know it, as Ubisoft has confirmed a March 21st release date for the game.Vegas 2 will feature numerous improvements over the first Nevada-centric Rainbow Six game, including an improved reward system, online co-op, sprinting, and destructible cover. We're assuming March 21 is a worldwide release for the game, although we will confirm with Ubisoft whether that date pertains to North America as well as Europe.[Via X3F]

"Talk to the hand!" has been the sentiment of the two Rainbow Six Vegas 2 teaser trailers released thus far, and while Ubisoft still isn't ready to show us the game, the publisher is ready to talk. A smattering of gameplay details was disclosed today, confirming what the game title already reveals: we're in for more Rainbow Six Vegas. More weapons, more armor, mo' better AI, more multiplayer and, of course, "more Vegas."As the Tom Clancy franchises continue along the 'EA Sports trajectory,' Vegas 2 will see its most ambitious seasonal tweaks in the form of improved "vastly improved" co-op play (a jump-in/jump-out campaign) and single-player expansion of the first game's multiplayer progression system (offline experience points). Anyone else convinced that the Ubisoft Montreal devs could code this game in their sleep?Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is being developed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Games for Windows, and is currently scheduled for a March 2008 release.

  • New Rainbow Six Vegas 2 teaser now glam-free, time paradoxical

    by
    Ross Miller

    12.20.2007

Perhaps to replace its last embarrassing trailer, Ubisoft has unveiled a new teaser for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2. This teaser offers even less of the game than Duke Nukem Forever's recent sighting, opting instead to show a few seconds of operatives hopping out of a helicopter. There is one pesky problem, and that is with time itself: if you notice the first shot of the helicopter it displays 6:52:12 and the chopper isn't close to the building. When the camera cuts back to the helicopter next to the building, time is again 6:52:12. There are two (and only two) logical conclusions: either we are to assume two helicopters, with shots from two separate buildings, or Vegas 2 has a time travel component. Hopefully Ubisoft will come clean on its temporal experiments sometime in the near-distant past-future.[Via Megatonik]

If you're wondering what Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will look like in-game, close your eyes and wish really hard for a new trailer. However, if you want to see what operatives do when not scaling walls or killing people (hint: it involves bountiful, big-breasted, brunette bimbos bumped briskly by brazen bodies), boy do we have a teaser for you.The original video was posted and later pulled by GameTrailers, only to be re-uploaded to the site via a user -- if the video is pulled again, you can also find a copy at DailyMotion (via Megatonik). Other facts: it's still in Las Vegas and that's the logo above. Did you want to know anything else? Don't be so greedy!

  • PS3 Fanboy review: Rainbow Six: Vegas

    07.02.2007

After much delay, PS3 owners are finally able to taste the dish Ubisoft first baked for Xbox 360 owners back in mid-November. Has the extra six months in the Ubi incubator, provided PS3 gamers with a far superior version? Does the PS3 version blow its Xbox cousin out of the water? Does the PS3 rendition give you superhuman powers?Rainbow Six: Vegas weaves an interesting-enough plotline, centering around southern boy Logan Keller, a recent rising star amongst the ranks of the Rainbow team and whose face you'll become intimately familiar with as you duck him behind crates or crane his neck around doorways to spot and eliminate bad guys. One of our hero's first missions starts the Rainbow team off in Mexico, where you're being sent to eliminate a terrorist threat led by international terrorist Irena Morales. The game's plot is riddled with conspiracy-a-plenty, taking twists and turns while leading the Rainbow team to locales like Mexico, Vegas (of course) and later, an expansive hydroelectric dam.
