  • Media Molecule, Insomniac head to Nordic Game Con

While last year was marked with a strong Japanese delegation, this year's coterie of speakers at the Nordic Game Conference is more of the Western variety. Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet), Insomniac Games (Resistance series), Tigon Studios (anything that has Vin Diesel in it) and consultancy agency Englobe have all signed up to hold sessions at the conference in Malmö, Sweden on May 19 and 20. Insomniac community manager Ryan Schneider will be there along with Tigon's head of game production Ian Stevens, Englobe founder Tom Edwards and some unnamed reps from Media Molecule. Media Molecule are probably still drawing straws at the moment as they're busy flying off to attend this week's D.I.C.E. Summit and making preparations for next month's Game Developers Conference. It might be a little too early for them to decide who'll be there in May.

  • New jacket, same game: Fancy up your copy of Resistance 2

That copy of Resistance 2 looking a little dated? Fancy it up with some new digs, and by that we mean insert art, courtesy of the PlayStation Blog. Three covers are available to download from the blog's official Flickr page to redress Nathan Hale's latest adventure: the original North American box art (not pictured), the Ying-and-yang art from Europe (pictured left) and an extreme close-up design that would make Wayne Campbell proud. We're all for changing it up, but something tells us PlayStation fans are more eager to swap out their Resistance 2 discs for something a little more intense.

  • NPD: Console exclusives performed with mixed results in '08

According to the NPD, a good exclusive does not necessarily equal good sales. The group has collected data for 2008's exclusives on each platform and, well, there have been some under-performers. On the Xbox 360 side, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts was a disappointment, selling only 140,000 units. The other exclusive on Microsoft's console, Fable 2 (Joystiq's GOTY), was more of your traditional success story with a respectable 1.2 million copies sold. And what about the industry-leading PS3? We already know MGS4 sold extremely well, but the same cannot be said (yet) for LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2, both of which seemed to perform lower than expectations; LBP sold 611,000 copies in North America while R2 unloaded 600,000 units. As for Nintendo, well ... it won. It always does. Last we heard, Nintendo stopped making games and was in the process of building a Kirby-shaped Death Star to orbit the planet.

  • Resistance 2 patch 1.40 coming Monday, un-resets your experience

Have you been noticeably irked by some of Resistance 2's precious little "features" (i.e. bugs)? Fear not, true believer, patch 1.40 is on its way and coming Monday, January 26. If you've noticed your multiplayer level inexplicably reset to one, you'll now get it back to the proper level, plus whatever experience you earned post-reset. The update will also correct Trophy errors, such as the one requiring 10,000 kills -- if you've done the deed but not gotten the reward, this patch will retroactively apply it. Full patch details after the break.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Many of the bugs related to saving, progression and Trophy accumulation will be fixed in a 1.40 patch available to all Resistance 2 players this Monday (1/26). For example, some players may have had their character data mysteriously reset. Those players can take comfort in knowing that all their lost progress will be restored -- and that any additional XP earned since will still count. Those that acquired the 10,000 kills necessary for the Killing Machine Trophy will automatically unlock it once the 1.40 patch is applied. Here are the patch notes: Trophy/Medal/Ribbons "Salute Me" trophy is not awarded until player reaches level 31 (Lieutenant) "Berserker" trophy can be collected during non-ranked games "Survivor" medal can be collected in cooperative games "Sure Shot" ribbon is awarded if player has accuracy of exactly 50% Clans Added clan support for viewing members, sending invites, and setting up clan tags Default clan region is now USA

  • NPD: MGS4 sells over 1 million in US, Tomb Raider left undiscovered

Now that we've seen the real list for 2008's top-selling games, Gamasutra has taken a look at some of the high-profile titles that didn't make the cut. Thanks to data from the NPD, we now know Metal Gear Solid 4 has passed the one-million threshold in the US with 1.08M in sales -- 775K in June, 301K since then. It's worth noting that the figure doesn't include copies sold in the MGS4 PlayStation 3 bundle. Globally, Old Snake has enlisted over 4 million soldiers. As for LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2, they sold 611K and 598K stateside in 2008, respectively. Here's the bad news: Tomb Raider: Underworld has managed only 246K across three platforms since launching mid-November -- indeed a disappointment, but also a lowered bar for Naughty Dog's Nathan Drake vs. Lara Croft claim. To its credit, TRU has done better elsewhere, selling 1.5 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Prince of Persia did 483K in December, with at least 213K of those going to the PS3 version. While that puts it on par with Sony's first-party titles last month, it also means the Xbox 360 version saw relatively disappointing sales. Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet were both "honored" (if you can call it that) in our Best of 2008 awards. See what else made the list.

Want to know what Resistance Retribution looks like when you infect it with Resistance 2? GameTrailers has posted an interesting comparison video, showing the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences that occur when you play with an infected copy. When your game is infected, you'll have access to a new health system (regeneration), and gain access to areas that won't be available to regular players. Watch the video, after the cut.

  • The spirit of WoW in Resistance 2's co-op gameplay

Much has been said on the influence of World of Warcraft on the MMO industry, but comparisons between other games and WoW don't end with massively multiplayer online games. The multiplayer cooperative mode of Resistance 2, a Playstation 3 exclusive from Insomniac Games, bears some similarities in its design to the ubiquitous Blizzard fantasy title in terms of class interdependencies. Insomniac Games co-op lead designer for Resistance 2, Jake Biegel, recently gave an interview with Christian Nutt from Gamasutra on the development of multiplayer cooperative gameplay, and the games that influenced its creation. Of course, the class-based Team Fortress 2 was cited as an influence, but Insomniac Games also looked to World of Warcraft for further inspiration. "We looked at experiences like Team Fortress 2, in which there are dependencies on classes, and games like World of Warcraft, in which there are large amounts of people working in tandem, creating this kind of epic synergy to overcome these encounters that wouldn't be overcomeable as an individual," Biegel says. • Call of Duty: World at War tops UK charts

    by

    12.02.2008

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War has climbed to the top of the UK all-format game sales charts, blasting its way through countless soldiers, explosive set pieces and Need For Speed: Undercover, which was in second place for some reason. Resistance 2 grabbed the tenth spot in its debut, while Sonic Unleashed, as Eurogamer points out, only managed 23rd ... on the Xbox 360-specific chart. Though FIFA 09's third all-format position makes complete sense and matches our envisioned UK stereotypes perfectly, it's somewhat harder to justify the #39 spot held by Mirror's Edge, not to mention Left 4 Dead's #34. Tomb Raider: Underworld, however, managed to go from a 9 to a 7 in a week. Not the first time that's happened.

  • Software sales data: UK gamers resist Resistance 2

    12.02.2008

According to Gamesindustry.biz, gamers in the UK are not buying into the whole Resistance 2 thing. It debuted on the British top ten charts in last place. The only other shooter on the charts, Call of Duty: World at War, reigns atop at number one. Gamesindustry.biz notes that R2's debut sales only accounts for two-thirds that of the original Resistance: Fall of Man's debut numbers. While the site doesn't give out specific figures, sales for R2 probably don't sound as bad as it's made out to be. The first Resistance was a launch title and was the first PS3 title to sell over a million copies. When you think of it that way, the original has some advantages towards sales and some tough shoes to fill. Whatever is keeping the Brits at bay, we just hope it's not because the game is now set in cowboyland instead of her majesty's empire. Seriously though, R2 is a vastly improved title over the first, so don't miss out on it.

Did you know that Resistance 2 still isn't out in Europe? It's finally out in a week, but you can try your hand at 8-player co-op a whole day early if you can make it to London. SCEE has announced that a free-to-attend event will be hosted at Rendezvous, a cake and ice-cream parlour in Leicester Square. There will be free food and 8-player co-op games will be taking place from midday to 11pm on November 27th. The event is restricted to those who are 18+ only.Let us know if you'll be attending. If you're in the area, you'd be silly to say no to free food and games, right? Plus, it just so happens that a certain London-based PS3 Fanboy blogger will be in town that day anyhow, so it'll be nice to know how many readers will be in attendance.

  • In a sea of Japanese DS games, two PS3 titles still shine

This week on the Japanese weekly sales charts, two PS3 games make a commendable debut. Yakuza 3 Way of the Samurai 3 (thanks, Fiddlesworth!) was sucked in and spat out by the top dog Kirby Super Star Ultra, but it still managed to land in second place, selling 81,047 copies. And who said Japanese gamers don't enjoy first-person shooters? Resistance 2 makes it into the top 5 by the skin of its teeth, selling 33,584 copies. While Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3 is still selling relatively strong, taking eleventh place, LittleBigPlanet isn't doing quite as well -- Media Molecule's title in currently in twenty second place. Check out the full chart, after the jump.

While the newly expanded descriptions of recent titles on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board site often serve as a pure source of unintended hilarity (See: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's "exaggerated breast proportions and movement"), a recent news post on Gamespot points out another side-effect of the ESRB's newly developed long-windedness -- certain descriptions for titles, such as Fallout 3 and Resistance 2, contain a few minor plot spoilers. There's no revelations of Keyser Soze-esque proportions in the descriptions for the titles listed above -- though they do reference specific moments in the game that prospective players may want to remain in the dark about. Consider yourself warned.

    11.14.2008

People who are currently playing Resistance 2 may have noticed some odd ends with the game here and there. There are some issues with online stats, with the split-screen's 4:3 ratio, and there are even some people complaining about player 2's stats in split-screen not saving. Insomniac knows of these concerns and has addressed these problems and more via the official MyResistance forums. They've compiled a list of known issues and misconceptions pertaining to R2 to clarify on what's being fixed and what's intentionally in there. We've posted the list after the break for your convenience, and even re-organized the list for clearer understanding.
