Were you able to go to Insomniac's Community Day? Don't worry -- neither were we (California's far away!). For those that weren't able to make it, the PlayStation.blog has a new video highlighting events from the day's activities. Obviously, a lot of Resistance-themed talks were at hand, as various members of the Insomniac Games team shared their studio to their loyal fans. This outreach shows why Insomniac Games is such an incredible studio.

Want to know a little more about what it was like to be an artist behind the scenes on Resistance 2? A few choice Insomniacs have contributed to an article over at CGSociety.org where they talk about how many of the game's art assets were put together. The article also contains a load of screenshots from the game, such as the one above which shows an untextured Leviathan in the modelling package Z-Brush. A great read for any enthuast game artists.

You know, Easter Eggs are always fun little secrets to seek out -- such as this one from Resistance 2, which candidly gives a shout out to Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4. Reader Jay stumbled upon this "MGS4PWNS" sign in co-op mode. It looks like the ladies and gents at Insomniac have enjoyed MGS4 quite a bit. And why not? It's great. To see the EE for yourself, just check out the Spec Op's ammo crate after "prototype ammo berserk" has been activated. We haven't tried this ourselves yet this weekend, but we're sure we'll run into it sometime. So how about you? Have you found anything interesting in your gaming sessions this weekend? [Thanks Jay!]

Read up if you missed yesterday's action and I'll start updating at the end of the post in a few.[Update: Ask and you shall receive Chase: Watch me play Resistance 2 LIVE, if, for some reason, you want to.]

  • Metareview -- Resistance 2

There are plenty of games going up against Resistance 2 for top honors this week (including, of course, Marcus Fenix and Co.), but if the early reviews are any indication, they might have a tough time toppling Nathan Hale's battle against the Chimera, at least from a critical point of view. IGN (95/100): "Resistance 2 is one of those games that manages to expand on its predecessor in every way. The single player is epic in scope and in story, which is practically worth the price of admission by itself." Gameplayers (90/100):"Resistance 2 is certainly good value for money. If you're online, you'll get a year's worth of gaming out of it no worries at all, while there is enough there to offer single players solid entertainment too. There's nothing particularly elegant or genius about the way the game has been developed: it is just a straight-up action shooter that hangs its hopes on a cool story idea and a wicked arsenal." 1UP (B+): "Overall, Resistance 2 is an extremely well-assembled FPS, with an improved campaign, fun competitive multiplayer, and a damn neat take on co-op. I wouldn't go as far as to say this is the definitive PS3 game, but it's certainly one of the best PS3 exclusives I've played.

If an alien invasion ever were to actually happen, what would you do? Would you resist like the brave folk seen in this trailer or would you just run away? These are questions you'll have to ask yourself when it's time to confront Resistance 2 this week. You've only got a day to mull it over before taking on the fight for freedom tomorrow, November 4.

Something for everyone this week. Resistance 2 hits the US while LittleBigPlanet finally sees a European release. Valkyria Chronicles also makes its way to American soil. If you're after something wholly unique and a little bit special this week, that might be your best bet (though only SRPG fans need apply). Here's the full release list:US Games Resistance 2 (Collector's Edition) Valkyria Chronicles James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace Tom Clancy's End War (Headset bundle) Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm (Collector's Edition) Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa History Channel Civil War: Secret Mission EU Games LittleBigPlanet MotorStorm Pacific Rift Tom Clancy's End War (Headset bundle) Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Legendary WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 Disney Sing It (Microphone bundle) Guitar Hero World Tour Asian Games Tom Clancy's End War Don't forget that your PS3 is region free. If you see anything on this list that isn't available where you live go ahead and import. Keep in mind that DLC is locked to the game disc's region so if you buy a US game you'll need to get your DLC from the US PSN Store. Release dates are constantly subject to change. That's our way of saying "don't blame us if something gets delayed last minute."

Lucky Californians. Looks like you'll be able to attend not one, but two Insomniac-sponsored Resistance 2 events. First is the now-standard midnight launch party. The real-world PlayStation Store at the San Francisco Metreon will feature Ted Price and the Insomniac gang giving away swag, autographs, and photo opportunities. This event will happen on November 4th, at midnight. Obviously, you'll want to get there a bit early. You should also mark November 7th on your calendars. If you are at least 17 years old and live/plan to be in the Los Angeles area on November 7, you can e-mail RSVP@insomniacgames.com to get details on a "community day," which will open the studio's doors to the public. There, you'll be able to see the house of Ratchet and hang out with the Insomniac gang. If you've never been to a development studio before, this may be your chance!

IGN has an interesting video, comparing the two distinct styles of Resistance: Fall of Man and the upcoming Resistance 2. It's been two years since Insomniac's PS3 launch title debuted, and it's very clear that the team has made significant improvements to the game engine. The single most noteworthy addition: color. Instead of the browns and grays that were so prevalant in the first game, we see a vibrant world of color in the second. Maybe it's a bit too colorful. Watch the video, after the break.

America First, America Only lives on. The Resistance 2 ARG website is now back in order after we all thought the Alliance was put out for good. We received a TELECORRESPONDENCE (e-mail would have just sufficed) notifying us of the return, though we currently don't know what's new over there -- it's been awhile. Maybe you could find out all the new tidbits, eh? Check after the break for the full e-mail transcription.

Want to get in on the Resistance 2 action? You'd better be quick! Registration for the open beta in the US closes at 4PM Pacific time today. If you miss it, however, don't be too sad. There'll be other chances to get a key, what with USA Today handing out a load of them, starting on Tuesday. No doubt other media outlets will get their hands on them too. If you get your hand on a code make sure you use it before 5pm October 29th. At that time the download servers will be turned off. At one minute to midnight on October 30th the gameplay servers will be switched off and the beta will effectively end. After that you'll have only a few days to wait before the full game releases. Maybe you could use the time to replay Resistance 1 in preparation.

A ginormous ad promoting Cloverfield 2 Resistance 2 has taken over one of the buildings on Los Angeles' well-trafficked Wilshire Blvd. The building-board features one of R2's massive Leviathans crashing through the complex. G4 has some more images of the ad from different angles. We strongly recommend not walking by this thing whilst on hallucinogenic drugs. Wait, what are we saying?! Nobody walks in LA.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Hey PS3 owners, a little torn up about the delay of LittleBigPlanet? Don't be! Today isn't marked only by bad news, because a lucky few of you have been admitted to the Resistance 2 beta, which started today. So, those of you who pre-ordered at GameStop, subscribed to QORE or won that GamePro contest, what are you waiting for?Besides, Resistance 2 is just like LittleBigPlanet. You say you can make millions of different games with LBP? Well, R2's got a billion of them. Like, there's "Shoot the Alien" or "Pretend the Alien's a Mutant and then Shoot It" or ... no, that's it, just those two. But they're a rich two.
