  • Online co-op in Resistance 2 might be too big [Update]

Who doesn't like a lengthy game? Resistance 2 is trying to give gamers an unprecedented amount of gaming content on one disc. The single player campaign, according to Insomniac, should clock in at 9-11 hours. It will take 18-24 hours to unlock all the single player Trophies. However, the much-loved online co-op mode will add another 10-15 hours of gameplay. If you want to level up your favorite class, expect to take 50-60 hours on that. And then, for the completionist, you'll want 150-180 hours to get all the upgrades for all three classes in online co-op.Thank goodness you don't have to pay for online access on PSN, as we're sure there are going to be quite a number of people ready to take this MMO-like challenge. Also, we're glad we don't have to level up every class to unlock a Trophy -- that would've been disastrous.Update: Corrected single player time estimates.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. After having just arrived home after a long-haul flight, what does this blogger happen to find inside his e-mail inbox? Resistance 2 beta access codes, that's what. Yes, it looks like the public beta is finally set up for business and at least is ready for download. Whether you've pre-order, signed up, or did something illegal to get into the beta, you'll find that your access codes are on the way at this very moment -- so keep checking those e-mails. The 2.2GB beta can be downloaded off the PS Store (do so by testing out that new "redeem codes" button next to "view downloads"). We haven't actually finished downloading it yet, so we're not sure if it's ready to play.

  • Infect your PSP with Resistance 2 and Retribution connectivity

In addition to the newly announced PSP Plus, Sony unveiled yet another way for your PSP and PS3 to interact with each other. All you have to do is connect a PSP running Resistance: Retribution with a PS3 running Resistance 2. Under R2's option screen, select "Infect your PSP!" and your PSP will enter "Infection mode."This "Infection mode" will cause your character in Retribution, former British Marine James Grayson, to become infected with an alternate mutated form of the Chimera virus Nathan Hale is infected with. You gain a new uniform, R2 weaponry, additional abilities, access to new Chimera areas, and more. Even the story will be slightly altered -- characters in the story will be aware of your Chimerian infection which will alter their behavior accordingly. For more details, Andrew has written a hands-on over at Joystiq that you can access right here.Source -- JoystiqSource -- PS.Blog

  • TGS 08: Resistance 2 infects PSP's Retribution, unlocks new features

Remember Nintendo's attempts at GBA-GC connectivity? Well, Sony may be a generation late to the party, but at least they're doing it right. For this interesting gaming experiment, you'll need a PSP, a PS3, Resistance 2 and Resistance Retribution. And the results are quite interesting. Earlier, we noted that you'll be able to use your DualShock controller with Retribution through a new feature called PSP Plus. However, there's even more fun to be had through the game's unique Infection mode. In this new feature, players can connect PSP's Resistance Retribution via USB cable to a PS3 running Resistance 2. From R2, players can go into the menu and activate Infection, which will almost instantly transform the PSP game. %Gallery-27792%

This video is probably not for those of you who are trying to stay away from spoilers. The clip shows some cinematic footage from Resistance 2 and give us an indication of where the story's headed. It seems that Nathan Hale could be going through some changes fairly imminently. What was that he said in the original teaser? 19 hours left to live? We're excited to get a proper narrative experience out of Resistance 2 and it's nice to see Hale talk, finally. Even if the lip syncing isn't perfect ...

Are we allowed to say that Resistance 2 is "bigger, better and more badass" than the original PS3 launch title? Because that's exactly what it is. In many ways, R2 is incredibly predictable, offering all the improvements one would expect from a highly anticipated sequel. Improved visuals? Check. Better gameplay? Yep. More features? Of course. While Insomniac has been largely focused on its ambitious 60-player online multiplayer offering, yesterday's demonstration finally let us experience the single-player campaign for the first time. Finally, we could see what the new engine was capable of -- and it's much, much more than what the multiplayer has led us to believe. The new lighting and particle effects are particularly noteworthy. The expanded color palette is a refreshing change from the grays and various shades of brown so prominent in the original. In fact, the vibrant particle effects and bright, sunny presentation reminded us a little bit of Ratchet & Clank ... that is, until a Chimera exploded into bloody chunks.%Gallery-32473%

Click for high-res image If you're a regular reader of this site, then you shouldn't find yourself estranged upon hearing the name Resistance 2. In fact, it should really get you pumped up as you know as much as we do that it will be one of the biggest titles for the PS3 this holiday season. While many of you may be quietly ripping it up on Girl With A Stick, we haven't been left in the dark for our share of Chimera blasting. We've also got our own taste of the viral-infected shooter having played both the single player campaign and a full 8-player online co-op game. We first started things off by going through the single player campaign. There were two levels available to us: the tutorial level at the very start which takes place in Iceland, and the second took us to the forests of Orick, California -- to which you've already witnessed the opening cinema. The Iceland level looked incredibly familiar; in fact, the very first screenshots ever revealed on this game came from the Iceland level. Think back ... that had a Goliath in it. A Goliath in the opening mission? That's pretty intense considering how these babies didn't appear until much later in the original title. From the very beginning of the game, we could already feel the pace and tone, and it was definitely set to awesome.%Gallery-14695%

  • Ted Price: Resistance 2 is 'just about finished'

    09.12.2008

With Resistance 2 expected to drop into Chimera-occupied Chicago in early November, Ted Price, Insomniac's president and CEO, has come forward to confirm that the game is nearly complete. "The game is just about finished," commented Price in a recent interview with GameSpot, adding that the final three to four week push, dedicated to fine tuning and squashing bugs, is "always the most difficult." Price also adds that the team has been "loath to cut any corners during development," making simply getting to the finish line with Resistance 2 something of a challenge for the developers. We appreciate the effort, honestly; the last thing we want to worry about when facing down an impossibly huge leviathan is if our game will freeze before we can bring the massive baddie to his equally gargantuan knees.

It seems you can't move for betas nowadays. If you weren't fortuitous enough to get into the SOCOM beta, maybe you should try your luck with Resistance 2. The beta sign-up page is now open for business, seemingly catering to to the entire online Resistance 2 community. So if you fancy the chance of some free online running-and-gunning with 59 other players at a time, be sure to sign up. You'll need to sign in with your PSN ID and answer a few questions. After that comes the long, tortuous wait. With SOCOM running throughout September and a LittleBigPlanet closed beta occuring between now and launch, this is going to be an interesting month. Last weekend at PAX, we sat down with Bryan Intihar, the Community Manager / Hand Model (yes, that is on his business card) for Insomniac to go over Resistance 2. We were able to get some fascinating details about the secretive co-op mode (drop-in/drop-out confirmed!), as well as some interesting story tidbits (evidently this time around, Hale remembers he can talk). To start things off, could you give us a quick rundown of changes from the first Resistance?Sure, there's a lot of course -- but in terms of the campaign we've put a lot more emphasis on Nathan Hale and that comes through in the story and how we're presenting the story. In R1, it was much more of a narrative approach with Rachel Parker telling the story, giving it a third-person feel. This time around it's all about Hale. %Gallery-14773%

  • Resistance 2 public beta slightly delayed

For the longest time now, we've heard that the public beta for Resistance 2 was scheduled for late September. However, now we're hearing that it's being pushed back to early October. The news comes as a mild-mannered note attached to a Resistance 2 press release regarding the North American release date (which is November 4 by the way).We suspect the slight delay is a direct repercussion of the SOCOM: Confrontation beta delay. With the SOCOM beta running slightly behind schedule, the R2 beta probably found itself following footsteps. The SOCOM beta now ends by October 5, and we'd expect the R2 beta to start no earlier than that.

Out of the many games that Sony was showing off at PAX this year, the one that easily dominated their show booth was Resistance 2. They had 16 stations setup, each linked into the ongoing private beta servers so that expo attendees could get a true taste of 60 player online action. While it was a bit disappointing that Sony wasn't showing off anything from either the single player or co-op portions of the game, it was great being able to try out the actual scope of Resistance 2's multiplayer matches. One of the first things you'll notice when you pick up the controller, is that the controls have been subtly improved. The awkward weapon select wheel and the slight aiming stiffness of the first game have been replaced with a two-weapon system and a considerably more fluid aiming / moving mechanic. While it's still not on par with the tightness of Call of Duty 4's controls, they are much more comfortable now and definitely made running around the level easier.%Gallery-14773%
