I'm just a little embarrassed to admit that my first thought upon seeing the preview disc for Resistance 3 show up on my doorstep was this: "Who can I con into playing this for me?" It's not that I hated the previous games in the series, they're fine for what they are, but my curiosity about what's next for the franchise was frankly dwarfed by my desire to pass work off onto other people. I didn't have any luck, and what a lucky break that was for me, because Resistance 3 -- at least for the three hours I spent with it -- is spectacular. I know, I'm still not sure I believe it myself. %Gallery-125571%

If you thought that being just two months away from the Resistance 3 launch (September 6) meant there was nothing left to learn about the game, think again! In this dev diary, Insomniac talks about a not-so-obvious influence for the gritty alien shooter: the cartoonish Ratchet and Clank series.

  • Sony introducing one-time-use online codes with Resistance 3

When an image of a European Resistance 3 hardware bundle surfaced yesterday, the mention of something called "PSN Pass" suggested that some kind of new online program was on the way. SCEE confirmed the program, revealing it as Sony's take on the "Online Pass" or "Project Ten Dollar" initiatives enacted by third parties -- a one-time-use code that enables online play, bundled with new copies of games and sold separately otherwise. "This program will be game-specific," a Sony rep said. "Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title." The initiative is intended to "accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio." Sony has clarified to Joystiq that the statement was "a joint SCEE/SCEA statement" and thus covers North America as well. Find the whole statement after the break.

Worried you won't be ready to blast Chimera with a white and orange PlayStation Move when Resistance 3 launches this September? Worry no more, as Sony today announced the Resistance 3 "Doomsday Edition," which retails for $150 and comes packed with a copy of the game (naturally), a PlayStation Move/Navigation Controller, a Sharp Shooter peripheral, and a PlayStation Eye. As you might expect, it launches alongside the regular retail pack on September 6 in North America, though no international details were revealed.

  • Resistance 3's chimeric pre-order options

Resistance 3's retail pre-order incentives are as varied as the human fertilizer used on a Chimeran garden. GameStop is the only one with a tangible bonus, offering an "authentic replica" of a Chimeran teeth trophy necklace, along with a multiplayer boost that allows players to start online warfare at level 5. Walmart has "a special set of five custom name titles, including Sentinel." The name tags ... Sorry, that's just way too boring, we can't bring ourselves to finish explaining. Amazon will have the "No. 60 Air Fuel Grenade" available in the single-player campaign while Best Buy has a special multiplayer skin (pictured) featuring Hale as if he hadn't received the viral inhibitor. Best Buy also has an "exclusive ability in multiplayer to taunt your fallen enemies." Finally, Canadians and other US retailers will receive a multiplayer skin to be one of the "Black Ops troops" featured in Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. A final option is just waiting until Insomniac inevitably releases all of it as DLC at some point in the future.

In a lot of ways, Resistance 3 is like that movie Road Trip -- just without Tom Green. And the van. And the comedy. Actually, it's really only like Road Trip in one specific way: the titular trip. See, in Resistance 3 players assume the role of Joseph Capelli as he makes his way from Oklahoma to New York City in a desperate attempt to finally thwart the occupying Chimera. The PlayStation Blog has posted some details about the campaign, including some specifics on locales -- even an eight-minute video walkthrough of some campaign action, some of it sections we have already previewed. Hit the jump for that video. As for multiplayer, the post talks about class freedom (you can be a sniper medic, for example) and some of the unique unlockable abilities, though what each one does isn't specifically detailed. Expect a multiplayer beta to go live "later this year" -- nothing more specific than that, though. If you picked up SOCOM 4, you can just sit back, relax and ... wait.

  • Resistance 3 demo to be included with Battle: LA Blu-ray

Remember when a billboard on the set of Battle: Los Angeles spilled the beans about Resistance 3 long before it was officially announced? It seems the film's creators have found a way to make up for the leak -- according to G4, the Blu-ray edition of the film will include a 30-minute demo from Insomniac's upcoming shooter; the same riverboat sequence we previewed back in March. We think the Blu-ray, which is due out June 14, is kind of a killer combo. You start by watching a big blockbuster about a military struggle against invading extraterrestrial aggressors, and then you actively play a big blockbuster about a military struggle against invading extraterrestrial aggressors. It's like peanut butter and ... more peanut butter.

After a disappointing showing in theaters Battle: Los Angeles has suddenly become a much more interesting option on Blu-ray now that Sony Pictures has announced it will include a demo for Resistance 3. This isn't the first time Sony's packed in PS3 demos on its Blu-ray discs, the last time was God of War III on copies of District 9, but Insomniac's highly anticipated shooter won't arrive in full until three months after the flick hits shelves. It's your choice if buying the flick (it's unlikely to be included on rental copies) is worth an early look, but you can still check out an announcement of the feature from G4 and list of other special features (plus trailers for Battle: LA and R3) after the break. Update: The official press release is out, and mentioned the game demo will be included worldwide with the movie, the first time that's happened. Also, concerning the movie itself, it will feature Command Control PiP special features and movieIQ.

Just over a week after its Community Day reveal of new Resistance 3 gameplay, Insomniac was back at it again, this time showing off a new single-player level and a new multiplayer map in Hollywood. I also got a chance to actually play through the boat level we saw last time around, and had the distinct feeling that, more than anything else for this game, Insomniac is really playing with the pacing of a first-person shooter. "Part of it is really trying to keep a better picture of the game as a whole," lead designer Drew Murray told me. "Much more in Resistance 3 than in past games, the design department has been more aware of what everyone else is doing," he said, which means more playtesting, and more communication between the teams of just what a level is supposed to feel like. Murray said that early in development, each level in Resistance 3 was assigned a descriptive word, and the word for the start of the forest-based level, seen for the first time this week, was "hunted." %Gallery-121061%

It's always healthy to take frequent breaks while playing through a first-person shooter to indulge in other, distinctly different kinds of shooting. If you purchase a specially-marked copy (or Full Deployment Edition) of SOCOM 4, then you should be all set -- Sony has announced that the game will include a voucher that will net you access to the public beta for Resistance 3. The bundle's announcement on PlayStation Blog doesn't mention when said beta will kick off, but mentions that the voucher itself includes further details. We'll make sure we'll let you know when we get our hands on one of these golden tickets! At least, we assume that they're golden. If not ... well, then, what's the point?

Insomniac Games hosted its annual Community Day in Hollywood yesterday, and Resistance 3 was on display front and center, with a few discussions, a bevy of single-player and multiplayer demo stations, and one new gameplay reveal happening throughout the day. The demo available to the public has been seen in video form before, but the other gameplay demo on hand, shown right after the announcement of Move and 3D support, was all new. Insomniac referred to it as "the boat level," because it's more or less an on-rails (on-river?) section played on a boat in the early part of the game. Protagonist Joe Capelli will be making his way from Haven, Oklahoma to New York City, and early on he jumps into a boat and starts touring up the muddy Mississippi towards St. Louis, through the flooded town of Wrightsburg, Missouri.

Insomniac has just announced at its Community Day event here in Los Angeles that when Resistance 3 finally arrives on September 6, it will bring with it support for 3D televisions, as well as compatibility with PlayStation Move and its Sharp Shooter attachment. The studio said during a public panel that it was encouraged by the Move functionality in Killzone 3 and plans to implement Resistance 3 in a similar way. This is all good news, because, let us tell you: If you've never died in a Chimera attack, holding a model gun with a motion controller attached while wearing 3D glasses, well ... you haven't really lived.

  • Get yourself cast as a survivor in Resistance 3

Alright, it's time to do a little pre-audition prep work: Let's see your best look of complete, abject despair. Good, good! Now, slump your shoulders and shuffle across the room, in a manner that just says, "Hey, my whole city just got destroyed by unswervingly violent alien aggressors." That's perfect! You might just have a chance to win Sony and Insomniac's "Get In The Game With Resistance 3" contest -- the winner of which will be cast as a survivor in the upcoming, Chimeric shooter. All you have to do is send in an image of you in "the middle of a Resistance-style battle," or looking as survivor-y as possible, which we assume involves looking very, very dirty and sad. If your submission is picked, you'll get a private tour of Insomniac Games, where your face will be scanned and stuck onto an in-game character. Quick, show us "I just watched my grandparents get eaten!" Oh, man. That's remarkable. Seriously, you're a shoe-in.

  • Resistance 3 multiplayer supports 16 players, intros new abilities

Insomniac Games has dropped the first details on the multiplayer component in Resistance 3, and those hoping the developer would reach MAG levels of simultaneous combatants after the 60-player Resistance 2 should probably be seated. Rather than escalate, the game's online offering will be more intimate, maxing out at 16 players -- eight on eight in any mode. The dev says the move is about making the competitive experience more "personal" -- not for any technical reasons. After playing a few matches at tonight's preview event, we found the sole map being demoed, a prison in the Republic of Chad (all the multiplayer stages are set outside the US), nicely sized for the player count. Admittedly, the action was considerably tame compared to the massive battles of the previous game in the series. Insomniac revealed -- and we tried -- some active and passive multiplayer abilities, the former represented by health/ammo drops and an electrified shield; the latter are always-active "stat buffs," such as making yourself more accurate when shooting while running. The final element we saw was the Berserk, which is rewarded for kill streaks and made our Chimeran character temporarily invisible. Objective-based modes are to be revealed later, giving us hope that the developer has some fresh ideas lined up for them.%Gallery-118253%

  • What's in a Name: Insomniac Games

    02.15.2011

We were unable to sleep while wondering about the origin story of Insomniac Games' name, but now we've got the answer from CEO and President Ted Price. Time to make that warm glass of milk and go to bed: It was the spring of 1996 and we were getting ready to announce our first game (Disruptor) at E3. At the time, we were doing business as Xtreme Software. But, right before we began working on the press release for the game, we found out that an Arizona database company was also called Xtreme. I don't know how they found us, but I remember getting a letter from a lawyer explaining that we couldn't use their name. Suddenly we had a few days to find a new moniker. We put up a white board and started writing down every name we could think of. We had about 100 that seemed viable. Some of the more popular ones were Ragnarok, Black Sun, Monument, Planet X and Firestorm. My personal favorite was one that [Chief Creative Officer] Brian Hastings had suggested - Ice-9. We liked it so much that we got permission from Kurt Vonnegut to use it. Ironically, it turned out that someone who HADN'T gotten permission from Kurt was already using it. And similarly all of our other favorites were in use. With about 24 hours to go Insomniac Games popped up. It made sense given we weren't sleeping much anyway. And incredibly, no one else was using it. Since then our logo has changed a couple of times. But fortunately the name has stuck. Insomniac Games' next two titles, Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, are scheduled for later this year on PlayStation 3. Like this feature? Be sure to check out the What's In A Name Archives.

Things are not looking up for humanity in the latest iteration of the Resistance series.
