Rex Rocket developer Castle Pixel recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for Blossom Tales, the studio's Zelda-like adventure game. The action-RPG is also on Steam Greenlight seeking community approval for distribution on the PC platform. Castle Pixel is seeking $45,000 by October 17 to fund the rest of the game's development. Blossom Tales has players exploring dungeons that "combine pre-designed layouts and randomized areas," completing quests as the young warrior Lily. While Castle Pixel did not list any other guaranteed platforms for the game on its Kickstarter page. Rather, additional destinations for Blossom Tales will be unlocked should the project achieve its numerous stretch goals; it will head to Mac and Linux at the $60,000 mark and Wii U at $250,000. The Pittsburgh-based developer announced its Wii U and 3DS ambitions for the game back in May 2013. [Image: Castle Pixel]

  • Joystiq Streams: Mega Man + Metroid + Castle Pixel = Rex Rocket [UPDATE: Relive the stream!]

Some people call Rex Rocket a space cowboy. Some people call him the gangster of love. Know this, though: When he travels across a ravaged universe like an interstellar Jason Statham, transporting scientists away from vicious robots, nobody ever calls him Maurice. Not even when he speaks of the pompitous of love. Rex Rocket, a slick slice of platforming righteousness made by the good people at Castle Pixel, gleefully taps the vein of classic video games. Wrought in the style of Mega Man and Metroid, but embracing the bright, black-lined coloring of 16-bit era games, it pits its space faring hero against deadly spikes, automatons, and other threats to scientists in the future. Joystiq Streams cannot resist such challenges. We're streaming a solid hour of Rex Rocket starting at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Creators Tyler Bud and Rob Maher will be on hand to talk about the game and hang out in the chat. Anthony John Agnello will be trying to survive the robot onslaught while Alexander Sliwinski asks your questions on air. Joystiq Streams broadcasts live on Tuesdays and Thursday at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but other streams go live all the time, so make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: Castle Pixel]

Retro action platformer Rex Rocket will be coming to Wii U, Nintendolife reports. Rex Rocket's Kickstarter backers received an update confirming that Nintendo has approved developer Castle Pixel as a Wii U developer. The Wii U version should arrive "sometime after the official PC game release," which is slated for this January. Castle Pixel's Robert Maher tells Joystiq that an iPad port is also being tested, and some of its touch features should make it into the Wii U version. Maher is also still interested in 3DS, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 ports, though they may have to wait until the Wii U version is completed.

Rex Rocket, the Mega Man meets Metroid action-platformer, reached the end of its Kickstarter over the weekend. Originally seeking just $6,000, a goal it met at the beginning of May, the funding drive closed at $10,987 this past Sunday. That put the project just shy of its $11,000 stretch goal, which the developer – now known as Castle Pixel – has decided to unlock anyway. The goal will put the game on Linux, and it will also allow backers at the $10 level or higher to contribute info that will be stored in nodes throughout the SS Montana, Rex Rocket's massive ship. Rex Rocket is aiming for a January 2014 launch on PC. In addition to the Linux port, Castle Pixel is trying to release the game on as many platforms as possible, including Mac, Vita, 3DS, Wii U, Ouya, iOS and Xbox Live Indie Games. If you'd like to play it on Steam, you might consider giving it a thumbs up on Greenlight.

The last week has been "pretty amazing," says developer Rob Maher. His team – composed of himself, programmer Tyler Bud and composer Nigel "Saskrotch" Shields – just got Rex Rocket funded on Kickstarter. It was a small goal compared to other Kickstarter projects, just $6,000, but to Maher it's monumental. "I mean it's kind of a dream come true for us to put our game up on Kickstarter and have it supported by all these different people, and it's really been exciting for myself and the team." Rex Rocket draws from Maher and Bud's Nintendo-fueled childhood, taking cues from Mega Man, Metroid and Mario, telling the story of a has-been hero drawn once more into the line of fire. Now, with the project fully funded, Maher and the team can focus on the game full-time. There are still 20 days left to earn more, however, and the team has big plans, including possibly achieving another dream, seeing Rex Rocket published on a Nintendo platform. And, even now, before the Rex Rocket Kickstarter is closed, Maher is planning the team's next game, Blossom Tales. But let's take it one thing at a time.%Gallery-187644%

The team behind the rad Rex Rocket Kickstarter has plans to bring Blossom Tales, a Zelda-style adventure game, to Nintendo platforms, if its fundraising goes well. Blossom Tales is a colorful, top-down adventure inspired by Zelda: A Link to the Past, developer Rob Maher tells Nintendo Life. "Set in the world of Blossom, the game follows a young and newly initiated Knight of the Rose, Lily. After King Orchid is double-crossed and cursed to sleep by the Wizard Crocus, it's up to Lily to find ingredients to concoct a potion that will restore the King," Maher says. "We are hoping to pave the way with Rex Rocket onto Nintendo and follow it up with Blossom Tales – depending on the success of Rex Rocket, we may develop a sequel first. Nintendo is the primary goal for us, 100 percent." The Rex Rocket Kickstarter has 21 days to raise less than $1,000 and reach its $6,000 goal. It's scheduled to launch in January 2014 for PC, with other platforms down the line.

What's that, another pixel-art game inspired by the likes of Mega Man and Metroid on Kickstarter? And why not! Rex Rocket tells the story of ... Rex Rocket, a war hero aboard the "epic star cruiser" SS Montana. His days of combat over, he's now saddled with the mundane job of ferrying a bunch of scientists and "Terra-Oozlings" to the Washington solar system. Naturally, things don't go according to plan. Long story short, Rex soon finds himself battling escaped Oozlings, haywire robots and the SS Montana's damaged computer. The game features plenty of weapons, exploration, puzzles, platforming, a sweet chiptune soundtrack and lots of enemies. Developers Rob Maher and Tyler Bud are seeking $6,000 to fund the project, with a planned release in January 2014. Rex Rocket is guaranteed on PC, though the duo hopes to port it to pretty much everything, including Mac, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, Xbox Live Indie Games, iOS and Ouya.
