Google is bolstering Stadia Pro's 'free' game lineup once more, although you might not be quite so thrilled with the consequences. The game streaming service is adding both the adventure sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider and the rhythm title Thumper to its no-extra-charge selection as of January 1st. However, Google is also taking away Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on December 31st at 12PM Eastern. It'll still be available to play after that date if you claim it in time, but you'll have to miss out on the start of Lara's journey if you sign up in 2020.

Sorry, Sony, but the next installment in Lara Croft's tomb-raiding adventures is slated to hit Xbox One as an exclusive on November 10th. As Microsoft's Xbox head Phil Spencer announced at Gamescom last summer, the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a platform exclusive, meaning gamers that don't own an Xbox One will be locked out of the party. From the gameplay trailer shown off at Microsoft's E3 presser, it seems this sequel will deliver more of the dodging, leaping, sliding, grappling and... tomb raiding developer Crystal Dynamics treated fans to with 2013's critically acclaimed reboot.

To prepare fans for the 2015 launch of Rise of the Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics is plotting a live-action series focused on famed adventuress Lara Croft, according to actor Stephen Lunsford. In a message posted to Instagram alongside a photo of the actor at the Crystal Dynamics offices, Lunsford explains that he "will be creating a [Tomb Raider] mini-series to be released with Rise of The Tomb Raider" that will serve as a prequel to both the upcoming game and an "eventual" live-action feature. How this series might relate to 2013's Tomb Raider, which is set prior to the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider, is unknown as Lunsford offers no concrete information about the series' story, nor any hints at its title. Lacking from Lunsford's message is any mention of what his role on the series might be, whether he'll be working in front of the camera or behind it. Lunsford's IMDB page lists primarily acting credits - he's best known for appearing in 40 episodes of tokusatsu transplant Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight and for a stint on MTV's Teen Wolf reboot series - though he's also worked as a writer and director, most notably on a series of promotional YouTube shorts dubbed "Tomb Raider Facts" that was created in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics. • Microsoft confirms Rise of the Tomb Raider publishing plans

Xbox marketing director Aaron Greenberg has confirmed that Microsoft is publishing Crystal Dynamics' upcoming action-adventure game Rise of the Tomb Raider, cementing its status as an Xbox-exclusive release. Rise of the Tomb Raider was outed as an Xbox exclusive earlier this year, with Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions slated to launch in late 2015. The game serves as sequel to 2013's series reboot Tomb Raider, which was published across consoles and PC platforms by Square Enix. Rise of the Tomb Raider's platform exclusivity raised the ire of series fans when it was revealed earlier this year. Microsoft's Phil Spencer previously noted that the company's partnership with Square Enix "has a duration," potentially clearing the way for a multiplatform Rise of the Tomb Raider release once the deal expires. With all the news that surfaced last week during Gamescom, it makes sense that video game pre-orders would increase at retailers like Amazon. As it turns out, the biggest winner coming away from the show is Nintendo, as Wii U games saw the biggest boost in pre-orders on Amazon (8.67 percent). By comparison, pre-orders for PS4 games rose 5.16 percent and Xbox One games increased 2.81 percent. The largest increase for a single game was 42.3 percent for Slightly Mad Studios' Project Cars. Bandai Namco announced a limited edition version of the game last week, which likely spurred new pre-orders. Rounding out the top five are Rise of the Tomb Raider (30.25 percent), Bloodborne (16.08 percent), Hyrule Warriors (11.77 percent) and Quantum Break (10.77 percent). You'll find the full list of the top ten games whose pre-orders increased on Amazon after the break, courtesy of MCV.

During its Gamescom press conference, Microsoft announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider would launch exclusively on Xbox platforms in holiday 2015. This came as a surprise to President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida, he said in an interview with Eurogamer. "It's very interesting the way Phil Spencer said, what we are saying is, in holiday 2015 Tomb Raider is exclusive to Xbox," he said. "So it's open to interpretation. But still, we didn't anticipate something like this would happen."

"The recent decision to release the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider as an Xbox One exclusive alienates the majority of the fan base and will ultimately lead to the demise of the franchise." For a vocal group of fans it's not just a business move, but a killing blow. Microsoft's claim to Rise of the Tomb Raider, as an Xbox-only game for Holiday 2015, is incurring the sort of backlash and petition-signing flurry (seen above) that's well known to veterans of the infamous console wars. And it's not even the first time a Tomb Raider sequel has been through this – just ask Sega Saturn owners who had to get a PC or PlayStation if they wanted to a keep their streak of unearthed relics.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is exclusive to Xbox platforms, Crystal Dynamics Head of Product Development Darrell Gallagher announced during the Xbox Gamescom press conference. It's due out in holiday 2015. Gallagher didn't mention whether it was scheduled for Xbox 360, Xbox One or both. Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to Crystal Dynamics' 2013 reboot, Tomb Raider. The first trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider shows Lara Croft in a therapist's office, anxious and unsettled over the horrific events of the first game, before she appears in a cave, bow in hand, and says, "We become who we're meant to be." Update: Gallagher takes to Tumblr to explain the decision to make Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusive, noting that PlayStation and PC players will have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. • Tomb Raider novel trots the globe in October

With not one but two new Tomb Raider games announced during E3 this year, Lara Croft is already awfully busy, but not so busy that she can't star in a new novel. Coming from DK Publishing and written by Dan Abnett and Nik Vincent, Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals will arrive in October. The novel takes place immediately following 2013's Tomb Raider, and it sees Lara dealing with the aftermath of her ordeal on Yamatai. More pressingly, Lara is "plunged into a frantic race to save her best friend Sam from a toxic overdose," which she hopes to cure with an ancient artifact instead of, you know, medicine. As a bonus, the artifact could "possibly help explain the supernatural events she witnessed on Yamatai." Naturally, Lara isn't the only one after the artifact – she'll also have to deal with "a nefarious magnate, a shadow society, and lethal henchmen." What's the deal with archaeologists and nefarious magnates, anyway? As for the meaning behind the subtitle, The Ten Thousand Immortals, the announcement offers no hints. Something to do with China's famous Terracotta Army, perhaps?

Rise of the Tomb Raider from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix may have been announced during Microsoft's Xbox press conference at E3 this year, but if Amazon UK is to be believed, Ms. Croft will sink her climbing axe into both current and previous-gen platforms, as well as PC. The sequel to 2013's excellent series reboot has appeared on the online retailer's site, noting PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC as the platforms it will call home next holiday season. While we expected the game to plumb the depths of Xbox One and PS4 - Square Enix CEO for the Americas and Europe Phil Rogers confirmed as much last August - it's a bit of a surprise to see listings for PS3 and Xbox 360. A nice surprise though, if true. We've reached out to Square Enix for official word. [Image: Square Enix]

  • Lara Croft: More than just an action figure

    by
    Susan Arendt

It's difficult to think of Lara Croft as ordinary. She's the Tomb Raider, after all, a gun-slinging, cliff-climbing, insouciant stealer of artifacts and slayer of mercenaries. But she wasn't always like that. As the recent reboot illustrated, she started off as something else entirely - just a girl with a penchant for myths and histories, more comfortable trying to puzzle out ancient mysteries than hanging out with her peers. Still not ordinary, really - she's an extremely well-educated and wealthy woman, someone who's had the best opportunities in life - but not the larger-than-life action figure we've known from previous games. The reboot showed a different Lara, a more relatable Lara. One who was frightened and calling for help, but who rose to the challenge when she realized help wasn't coming. In those moments of strife, one does what one must, but what happens when those moments are over? How do you go back to the normalcy of life once you've gone so far outside of it? That's a question raised by the trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider, as we see Lara in a psychiatrist's office, foot bouncing with anxious energy as a therapist uses his most soothing voice to help try and guide her focus toward making sense of the turmoil in her mind.

Lara saved her band of friends from the Tomb Raider reboot, but she'll face a new batch of danger in Rise of the Tomb Raider, due for holiday 2015. Rise of the Tomb Raider's debut trailer puts Lara back in hazardous wilderness, teasing glimpses of a temperamental bear and a frosted cave as an older man talks over Lara's hike: "People become who they are meant to be."
