  • WoW Moviewatch: How You Should Feel About WoW

Some people struggle for hours, spending effort and time introspecting and exploring their feelings. You could do that, I guess. Or you could watch this guide by Simply Impressive about How You Should Feel About WoW. With the appropriate shout-out to BC and previous expansions, Slightly Impressive does a good job of creating a bullet point list of usual sentiment. It's somewhat a shame that the official forum is so predictable, but once you've been through the cycle a few times... you probably know what complaints are coming. You can't produce a video about leveling without at least one joke about killing helpless critters. It's like a fundamental part of the topic: boars without livers, Murlocs without eyes. So Slightly Impressive had to tackle that joke in this longer video about A Noob's Journey. I feel like I've seen this video before, even though it's newly made. I don't know, it just has that familiar feel to me. Griff has been expanding his repertoire, and I appreciate his storybook take on this classic topic. Still, I just couldn't shake that too-familiar feeling, and I'm not sure why. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! If you haven't been keeping up with Malfurion and Sylvanas, the series explores what it would be like if major lore characters Malfurion and Sylvanas were married ... And in a sitcom. This latest episode explores how Malfurion and Sylvanas first met, and also explains what happened with Tyrande. Personally, I think this is the best episode so far. I've always thought the set-up of this machinima series was pretty cute, but I'm now really looking forward to the next one because Slightly Impressive just keeps nailing it. Michael Gray mention that the voice acting and machinima had really started to come together in Malfurion and Sylvanas: Episode 2, and I would say that's still happening. At no point while watching this did I feel like the voices were off. The only problem with this episode is that I don't have any cookies in the house, which will make more sense to you after you've watched the episode. Seriously ... I think I need to bake cookies now. • WoW Moviewatch: The Strolling Undead

Maybe it's because I'm a (relatively) new father, but I was totally under the impression that Slightly Impressive's The Strolling Undead was going to be about undead babies in buggies. Clearly, that's not the case. It's a parody of The Walking Dead, which is apparently a zombie show all the hip kids are watching nowadays. Frankly, I appreciate the missing jaw joke most of all. Because that bothers me. As an undead tank, I like to get into raids and start screaming "I would tell you when I'm pulling but I can't. I have no jaw. I can not speak." And then someone inevitably says, "Then how are you telling me this?" and I have to quit group in embarassment. My hat's off to Slightly Impressive. His work continues to come together well. • WoW Moviewatch: The Other Sha

Mr. Gray is out for the day, but he left this new machinima from Slightly Impressive for us to watch. The short, 2-minute video presents us with some of the other Sha players can find in Pandaria, such as the Sha of Fanboyism and the Sha of Elitism. Oddly, none of these other Sha have been incorporated into the game lore yet, possibly because they afflict players more than NPCs. The production of the video is pretty simple overall, but it seems like it was a lot of fun to make for Griffter and his ensemble of voice actors. Each cycle of the joke gives an opportunity for more humor and I'd say, for the most part, the script and the actors deliver. The light and amusing commentary on the player base is nothing new of course, but I always appreciate a new take on it. My favorite Sha is the last one -- I won't say what it is so I don't spoil the joke, but what's yours? Interested in the wide world of machinima? Who's the most compelling sitcom married couple of Azeroth? Slightly Impressive's Malfurion and Sylvanas. Without a doubt, Slightly Impressive has nailed his ouevre with this machinima sitcom. I love it. The voice acting could use some tightening up and the pace kicked up a little faster. There are a few awkward pauses played for laughs, but I wasn't certain it was a purposeful awkward pause or just an honest-to-Elune awkward pause. Still, that kind of feedback is almost universal; faster pace, tighter soundtrack. The same could be said for nearly every movie ever made, so Griffter's on the right track. • WoW Moviewatch: Azeroth Nature Network: Pandaren Special

Spoiler Warning: There be spoilers in this video. Not so much the review, but there's spoilers around. They're not big spoilers, really, and certainly no more spoilerish than the promotional material. But technically, spoilers so be warned. Slighty Impressive's review of the panda storylines in Azeroth Nature Network: Pandaren Special does a pretty good job of summing up What You Need To Know. Especially if you've not spent much time with a new character, you'll get a decent idea of what's going on. I like this style but Griffter could have picked up the pace a tiny bit. While I certainly think of the Pandaren as laconic critters, the narrator would benefit from a shot of sugary speed. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Join the Alliance!

Slightly Impressive created this Join the Alliance! pitch to enter a contest, but I think he summed up the reasons one should go Stormwind or go home. That is to say: beautifully varied colors of rooftops. Really, the rainbow joy of Stormwind's rooftops is quite amazing and perhaps the best thing about being Alliance. Of course, Goldshire makes an appearance in all its dancing night elf glory, and Griffter gives a shout out to the canal fishermen. But really, it's just a minute of good, goofy fun. While this video might not go down in the annals of history, it's decent for 60 seconds of giggles. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Some surprisingly difficult moments in life lurk in the drive-through of your local fast food joint. Seriously, I think I'd find it easier to butcher a cow, cook the meat, and make the burger myself than place an order on those speakers. We can get video to and from frickin' Mars with more clarity than we can place a taco order. That's what Slightly Impressive is tackling in Customer Service. Griffter's really been polishing his game. This new video has punchlines, good graphics, vastly improved voice acting, and a solid concept. My hat's truly off to you, brother. • WoW Moviewatch: Other MMOs

While some games might feel like wholesale copies of World of Warcraft, it's not like Blizzard is immune to the notion that good ideas should be incorporated into WoW. But what if Blizzard went crazy with that practice? Slightly Impressive's Other MMOs tackles the idea of Blizzard replacing pandas with aspects of other games. It's a good original idea from the machinima maker. While it'll take a keen eye to spot all the references, Other MMOs is clearly Griffter's best work yet. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Don't worry, no Lonely Island here. Trust me, I love that song too, but it's not really appropriate to this here column. Like a Boss is Slightly Impressive's take on a gathering of WoW bosses. It's a fairly likely cast of characters making jokes about the inevitable victory of player characters. I'm not sure this was Griffter's best video, though I can definitely seem him expanding with new techniques and new collaborators. Let's take it as a stepping-stone and look forward to the next step. • WoW Moviewatch: If Azeroth Had a Superhero

I'm often torn about Slighty Impressive's work. He's nothing if not prolific, which provides plenty of opportunities to like, hate, or be completely neutral about his efforts. Some of the stuff I really like, and I can see a kernel of genius. Other things fall somewhat flat for me. Sadly, If Azeroth Had a Superhero falls into the second category. It's not that the concept is bad. It's actually quite a cute idea, and the video is put together in earnestness. I think some overacting could have helped it, or maybe faster pacing. Again, I can't point to anything and say, "This is bad." But when the final video hit my screen, it just didn't work for me. What do you guys think? Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Making the Alliance More Appealing

    07.16.2012

In this video, Slightly Impressive tackles the challenge of Making the Alliance More Appealing to new WoW players. It's an interesting note because I've never really thought the Alliance was losing a huge number of players, at least not proportionally. Still, you can easily make the argument that the Alliance could use a newer, more hip image anyway. Sadly, my idea to force all Alliance players to wear skinny jeans didn't make the cut. This is a comedy video, so don't look for serious answers. I admit that I like his notion for fixing Varian. If Varian started wearing that hat around Stormwind, the game would certainly be more entertaining. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! • WoW Moviewatch: If WoW Was Real

All right, Slightly Impressive! Now we're getting somewhere! If WoW Was Real has a hilarious concept, much stronger execution than we've seen before, and a full-on, earnest love of the joke. We're talking night-and-day better here. Slightly Impressive is definitely starting to step up the game. The voice acting is much stronger. It sounded like a couple of folks might have a plastic cup over their microphones or something, but the higher voltage voice acting definitely improves the video. I'd take a look at how you frame group shots, though. While I get why you cut from character to character, it'd help to have an establishing shot of the group standing together. And before the comments explode, I'm assuming it's If WoW Was Real and not If WoW Were Real on purpose, all right? And besides, you know what they say about getting into grammar fights on the internet. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! • WoW Moviewatch: 5 Stages of WoW Playing

I'm not sure what to make of Slightly Impressive's newest video, 5 Stages of WoW Playing. It's definitely moving in the right direction; the audio sounds better, and he's trying out new concepts and experimenting with the overall flow of his jokes. I think it could use more punch line highlight. Think about when you read a funny article over at Cracked. The language goes out of its way to point out This is the funny -- this is the part you laugh at. Subheaders, pictures, and even sentence structure spell out those vital moments. You can't miss them. SI needs to find a way to import that highlight into the videos; it'd help break up the narration a bit. Interested in the wide world of machinima? I'll admit that I've sometimes been a little critical of Slightly Impressive's work. He's got good ideas and seems to be moving in the right direction, but the relatively flat delivery tends to leave me feeling a bit hollow. With Vote Sylvanas 2014, though, Slightly Impressive delivered a hilarious movie. The big laugh for me came during the introduction of Sylvanas herself. I won't give away the joke, since it'd blow the video, but take the couple of minutes to watch Vote Sylvanas 2014. It's Slightly Impressive's best work, and it deserves the attention. • WoW Moviewatch: Stuff WoW Hipsters Say

Stuff WoW Hipsters Say by Slightly Impressive is a challenging video for me to review. The kernel idea for the video is solid. I'm actually a little surprised we haven't seen more WoW hipster videos, so this is an area ripe for the plucking. The video just felt a little too even-keeled for me. The voice acting could have been kicked up a notch or maybe the dialogue a little tuned. Like I said, the idea for the video is solid, but the execution could use some refinement. I'd definitely recommend experimenting with character voices, since that could go a long way toward promoting a better sense of production. Interested in the wide world of machinima?
