Nintendo fell slightly short of the reduced financial projections it set in January, with the Wii U reaching 2.72 million shipments for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. However, the system remains way off Nintendo's initial projection of 9 million, so it's no surprise to see more conservative estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015 of 3.6 million units. That's 60 percent less than Nintendo originally projected for the previous year. Total Wii U shipments are now up to 6.17 million, nearly a year and a half after the console launched. On the software side, Nintendo revealed figures of 32.28 million units to date, with New Super Mario Bros. U (4.16 million), Nintendo Land (3.09 million) and Super Mario 3D World (2.17 million) leading the way.

  • Reign in the new Princess Peach Wii Remote Plus next week

It's not just the handhelds that are going peach and pink: A new Princess Peach Wii Remote Plus is floating onto retail shelves in North America next week. You can acquire the peachy Motion Plus controller starting April 24, at the suggested retail price of $40. To bask in its full regal splendor, take a peek below the break. It's a shame the Peach controller didn't make it out in time for Super Mario 3D World, or with a Toad one that Nintendo's not yet dreamed up. Playing that game with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad controllers is bordering on the problematically geeky, but we'd so do it. [Images: Nintendo]

  • New Super Mario Bros. U ships 3.89M, Super Mario 3D World almost 2M

Between Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros .U, Nintendo's mustachioed mascot (whose year it wasn't) has shipped almost 6 million units on the Wii U. In figures revealed in the big N's financial briefing, NSMBU is now at 3.89 million for its lifetime shipments, while SM3DW is at around half of that with 1.94 million. Keep in mind that 2D Mario had the head-start on its 3D sibling when it launched alongside the Wii U, not to mention a much larger presence in system bundles. The Mario platformers are two of five Wii U games that have shipped more than a million so far this fiscal year - that's between April and December 2013, by the by. The other three launched after April, so their shipments for the period represent lifetime figures anyway. Coming in third behind the two Marios is yet another Mario, namely Mr. Luigi Mario with Super Luigi U. The green man's standalone expansion to NSMBU shipped 1.51 million after arriving in the summer. It wasn't just the year of Luigi because Wii Party U and Zelda: Wind Waker HD both got on in the act, shipping 1.24 million and 1.15 million respectively after their fall launches.

  • Joystiq Top 10 of 2013: Super Mario 3D World

Team Joystiq is barging into 2014 with a celebration of last year's best games. Keep reading throughout the week to see our assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs. Mario and his extended family has been our constant companion for quite some time now, and his adventures were starting to feel just a bit too ... familiar. There wasn't anything wrong with them, really, but they did lack that certain sparkle that made us fall for him all those years ago. We still loved him, of course, but we'd be lying if we said our eye hadn't started to wander. Then Super Mario 3D World came along to remind us that Mario is now, and forever shall be, our hero. Super Mario 3D World imbues the franchise with fresh energy, crafting ingenious, secret-stuffed levels and slathering them in a fresh coat of Wii U-colored pretty. New power-ups like the clone-producing cherry and the adorable-yet-incredibly-useful kitty suit provided new ways to explore while also reminding us that jumping, running and smacking into blocks is still an incredibly fun way to spend your time. Just making it to the flag at the end of a level (and getting the 10,000 point bonus for landing on the top, natch) is a pleasure, but snagging all the hidden green stars and the rubber stamp in the process is a joy.

Nintendo compiled a list of 20 games that Club Nintendo members noted as their favorites from 2013 recently. Nintendo featured ten games for each for 3DS and Wii U, with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as the lone game that landed on both lists. Among the Wii U games selected by Club Nintendo members are the obvious Nintendo-published choices in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3. The best-of list also includes Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Rayman Legends and Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, the latter being the single eShop-only game of the Wii U group. The list of 3DS favorites are marked by both Pokemon X and Y, Fire Emblem: Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Head past the break to see the full Club Nintendo-selected Wii U and 3DS list of favorites from the year.

  • PlayStation 4 enjoys most successful launch week in UK history

The PlayStation 4 had the best launch week in the UK of any gaming system to date, and in the words of Chart Track it "eclipsed" the Xbox One's sales from the week before. There's no confirmed numbers, but we know the country's previous fastest-seller is the PSP, and it sold 185,000 units across its debut week in 2005. The long and short: The PS4 done good. British industry site MCV put the PS4's opening week sales at 250,000, according to its retail sources. MCV also pinned the Xbox One's UK numbers at 150,000, but again that figure is unconfirmed. In any case, the good news is both consoles are enjoying successful launches both in the UK and across the globe; Sony announced 1 million PS4 sales within 24 hours of the console's debut in North America, a figure Microsoft also hit when it launched the Xbox One across 13 markets worldwide. As for this week's software charts, there's some predictable shuffling with the console launches. Call of Duty: Ghosts drifted back to the top, after FIFA 14 stole ahead last week with the Xbox One Day One bundles. The rest of the top ten is made up by games available across Xbox One and PS4, with the exception of Grand Theft Auto 5 in seventh, and Batman: Arkham Origins in tenth. The charts don't read so well for the Wii U, though. The system's standout holiday game, Super Mario 3D World, debuted in 14th place, just behind PS4 launch game Knack in 13th.

If you're a resident of Her Majesty's Kingdom who's been tempted into a Wii U purchase by the five-star brilliance of Super Mario 3D World, hold your British horses! Nintendo's UK web-store has an offer that's worth a gander at least. For the British sum of £300, you get a black 32GB Wii U, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Luigi U, and Super Mario 3D World. To top it off, Nintendo's throwing in a special red-and-blue, M-emblazoned Wiimote and a matching red Mario headpiece. To re-cap, if you're planning on picking up the the new £250 Mario-themed bundle, this is the same but with Super Mario 3D World, the Wiimote, and the cap chucked in for £50 extra - not bad at all. The Mario Mega Bundle, as it's prodigiously titled, is one of four new Wii U bundles on the big N's UK webfront this month. We've already mentioned the other Mario-centric bundle, then there are 8GB Wii Party U and Just Dance 2014 packs, both of which include Nintendo Land and are also priced £250.

This launch trailer for Super Mario 3D World offers a brief overview of the game's cast of characters and varying power-ups along with glimpses at the stages players will leap through. Among the characters not shown is Rosalina, an unlockable fifth character that stars in Super Mario Galaxy. The trailer, intended for European audiences, notes the game's November 29 release date, though it will launch November 22 in North America. Our review of the game was positively glowing, finding the platformer "utterly delightful from top to bottom."

Our review of Super Mario 3D World couldn't help but mention Luigi's "adorable cat butt." So, obviously, it's a five-star game from us. Eurogamer (100/100): "It's beautiful as well as busy, too. While Nintendo came to HD textures late, it's benefited more than most - probably because it has rendering interests that go beyond rust and gunmetal." IGN (96/100): "Super Mario 3D World is marvelous, and its constant variety and fantastic light-hearted co-op play proves that Nintendo still knows exactly how to tweak their Mario formula in fun ways." Game Informer (93/100): "While 3D World shines in single-player, the fun multiplies with others. This merges clever and flexible 3D maps with New Super Mario Bros.' wild four-player gameplay. Everyone fights over their favorite characters not just for looks, but also for their unique traits." Edge (90/100): "This is Mario like you've never seen him before, and unlike so many of his next-gen rivals, he nips along at an effortless 60fps. If the true measure of new hardware's worth is how stark the difference is between it and what came before, then this is the most next-gen game that 2013 has yet produced." The Escapist (80/100): "Super Mario 3D World is a very good Mario game that suffers only in that the unrealized potential for it to have been a great game, period, keeps peeking in between the cracks."

Super Mario 3D World is excellent. If you have access to a Wii U, you absolutely have to play it. If you don't have access to a Wii U, you should consider either picking one up or making some new friends. The game is utterly delightful from top to bottom. That's all you need to know, honestly, but if you're in the mood for a few paragraphs of effusive praise, then by all means, read on.

  • Super Mario 3D World doesn't herald end of Super Mario Galaxy, assures Miyamoto

Super Mario 3D World may be the "present culmination of 3D Super Mario," but that doesn't mean Nintendo's EAD team is done with Super Mario Galaxy games. Speaking in a recent Iwata Asks interview, EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto assured fans there could be another entry in the series that appeared twice on the Wii to high acclaim. "The same team can't make both [Super Mario 3D World and another Super Mario Galaxy game] at the same time," Miyamoto said. "And we can't bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma." The same interview revealed a few interesting tidbits about Super Mario 3D World, including that fifth playable character Rosalina is unlocked by beating the main game i.e. getting the ending, and her unique ability is a "special spin attack" (see above.) Also, the cloning power-up that lets you control multiple heroes was inspired by a mistake, after an EAD developer accidentally used a placement tool to put in two Marios. Not that it's very surprising, but 3D World Director Koichi Hayashida also noted Nintendo had the Wii U game in mind ever since it began development on 3DS entry Super Mario 3D Land. As for future Mario adventures, Miyamoto said, "Personally, I would like to take on a variety of new challenges with Super Mario Galaxy and design 2D Super Mario games in an easy-to-understand way within certain restraints." Super Mario 3D World is out next week on November 22 for the Wii U.

I think we all needed a lift after that opening, so let's run down all the fun and games of this morning's 3DS-focused Nintendo Direct. Here's a point-by-point recap of all the major goings-on. 3DS Release dates ahoy! North America gets Bravely Default: Flying Fairy on February 7, and Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on February 28. An ocean's jump sees Mario Party: Island Tour confirmed for European arrival on January 17. A rogue bit of Wii U news: Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina is an unlockable fifth player-character in Super Mario 3D World. Also, check below the break for a video revealing some of the game's other hidden qualities, such as mic integration, Mario Kart-style levels, and an unlockable retro "Luigi Bros." game - in this, the year of... Staying with the Wii U, a December-dated system update will allow users to combine their Wii U and 3DS eShop balances, as well as purchase content cross-platform. The update will also bring the long-awaited Miiverse support to 3DS. Oh, and new Pikmin 3 DLC is coming next month, too. Back firmly with the 3DS: A YouTube app is due on the handheld "later this month." Returning to Europe, there's a pocket-sized soccer management sim on the way to 3DS owners there. No, it's not Football Manager Handheld.

If you were drained by the New Super Mario Bros. series' abundant re-use of tracks and underwhelming synthesizers, know that Super Mario 3D World's soundtrack may feel a little more inspired. In an interview with Destructoid, 3D World Lead Composer Mahito Yokota explained that "a lot" of the game's tracks will be live recordings. "We're arranging the music with a big-band feel, taking advantage of a full horn section with trumpets and saxophones," Yokota said. A horn section and stringed instruments flowed through this recent trailer, but hearing that the greater soundtrack will feature plenty of recordings is a bit of a relief. Considering some of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack's highlights, it'd be nice if 3D World's tunes are also lively enough to remain stuck in the minds of players years after they've finished the game.

For the meticulous player who takes pride in the unblinking, unfaltering dash through a gauntlet of precipitous drops and spinning spikes, multiplayer is probably the worst thing to happen to Mario. As with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, you're often foiled by those you would call friends in Super Mario 3D World. That jump would have been perfect, but Peach bopped me on the head and sent me to a molten death in the lava below. I would have gotten that hidden power-up and used it properly, had Toad not run off with it first. Who are these other three people and why do they torment me so?

It goes over the different abilities of the four Super Mario Bros. 2 characters, the cavalcade of power-ups in the game, and - awwwwww - the kitty suit, officially the cutest thing. Also, it's probably the least scandalous catsuit in gaming to date, which is nice. Super Mario 3D World scampers onto the Wii U on November 22.
