Ahead of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, you'll be able to replay the original 1987 release of Tecmo Bowl when it comes out on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch tomorrow. Not to be confused with the NES version most people associate with the game, the $8 Arcade Archives rerelease that's making its way to the PlayStation Store and eShop this week features a mere two teams -- the Wildcats and Bulldogs -- and no licensed players. So, no, you can't use Bo Jackson to demolish your friends and family members.

Nintendo has announced a batch of new old games are coming to the 3DS Virtual Console. First is the NES port of Donkey Kong, due on August 15, followed by the NES port of Tecmo Bowl sometime next month. Super Mario Bros. 3 is also on its way later this year, to both the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Finally, Nintendo assures lauded Game Boy Color platformer Wario Land 3 is "coming soon" to the 3DS. Both the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles have been busy lately: Capcom just recently completed the Mega Man hexalogy on the 3DS, with more of the blue bomber arriving in the coming months. And, late last month on the Wii U Virtual Console, Nintendo finally re-released Earthbound.

  • Tecmo Super Bowl 2013 gives classic game up-to-date NFL rosters

Last year, a group of crazily dedicated fans modded the iconic Tecmo Super Bowl to update it with current and correct NFL listings. One year on, they've done it again with (the unofficial) Tecmo Super Bowl 2013, featuring NFL teams and players fully up-to-date as of September 2. It's like one of those roster updates for Madden NFL 13, except for a 21-year-old NES classic. It's surely an insane and time-draining undertaking to update Tecmo Super Bowl like this, let alone do it for two years running. If that inspires you to join in with the retro-current football fun, all you need is an emulator and the ROM file, and both can be found at TecmoBowl.org. Oh, and not a single measly dime because it's free.

Sports MMOs haven't gotten off the ground as of yet, and whether their lack of mainstream success is due to design challenges or some other factor, they remain obscure oddities for the most part. Somewhat less obscure is Tecmo's 1980s Nintendo series based on the National Football League. The aptly named Tecmo Bowl was a mainstay on Nintendo's first 8-bit console, and now a group of fans have helped assure that Gridiron Heroes, a new Facebook game inspired by the classic series, will in fact be made. Kotaku reports on the last-minute miracle finish to the project's Kickstarter drive, with the development team collecting $7,613 (measured against a goal of $7,500).

You'd think one April Xbox Live schedule would be enough, but apparently not for Microsoft. The company just issued another release schedule packed with Xbox Live Arcade, DLC, Games on Demand, Avatar goodies and Deals of the Qeek. Leading the pack is the long-awaited release of Tecmo Bowl Throwback. Xbox owners can also expect new Game Room titles, Left 4 Dead 2 and BioShock 2 DLC and a half-priced The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. Check out a full list of the impending releases after the break.

  • Tecmo Bowl Throwback official, coming to XBLA & PSN

    03.02.2010

Tecmo Bowl Throwback was first revealed through a trusted Joystiq source back in January (and then subsequently popped up in an ESRB rating), so we weren't exactly thrown into a tizzy when Tecmo released the official announcement today. Throwback will be released on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this spring. As previously understood, the game will be a remake of the SNES's Tecmo Super Bowl and will feature an option to "switch to the classic 2D style." Developed by seasoned remake studio Southend Interactive (Lode Runner, R-Type), the game's main new feature (aside from "all new 3D graphics," of course) is online play. Today's announcement additionally revealed Throwback will feature 32 teams and online leaderboards and customizable options for teams and rosters, and ... and ... whoa, whoa, it's almost like we're talking about a simulation football game here! Relax -- sorry about that. Try to cool down with the screenshots below. %Gallery-87016%

  • ESRB rates 'Tecmo Bowl Throwback' for PSN and XBLA

    by
    Griffin McElroy

    02.21.2010

It seems that, once again, our anonymous tipster was right on the money. The ESRB recently rated Tecmo Bowl Throwback for the PSN and XBLA platforms, describing it as a "top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the 'Tecmo Bowl Champion.'" Though the game earned an "E" rating, the listing mentions "cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops" and "a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage." How positively scandalous! Surprisingly, the ESRB listing doesn't mention a twelve-foot-tall, cybernetic Bo Jackson who causes every player who thinks about tackling him to explode in a fountain of gore. So, we're guessing that feature isn't getting ported over from the original game.

Update: Our source contacted us with some more info, confirming that Tecmo Bowl Throwback is indeed based on the SNES version of Tecmo Super Bowl. A trusted source (the same who provided us with early knowledge of Lucidity and NBA2K10 Draft Combine) has just informed Joystiq that Tecmo's planned Tecmo Bowl update for XBLA is also coming to PSN. Dubbed "Tecmo Bowl Throwback," the game is a remake of the NES classic SNES version, complete with HD graphics and an updated soundtrack -- it also retains the original plays and team stats. And for those of you who fear the fancy-schmancy graphics of high-def games, Tecmo is also including an option to play Tecmo Bowl in its original state. There's even team customization, ensuring your lifelong dream of creating a horribly out-of-shape and uncompetitive Joystiq team is a real possibility. While we were hungry for more news, that's all our source could provide. But, hey, if you're in the know and want to drop some details in our lap, we would certainly appreciate it. Anonymity assured!

Following last week's drought due to the public holiday, Nintendo has turned the download faucet back on in Japan. It's another week free of WiiWare, but there's certainly enough Virtual Console material to make up for it. Outside of a trio of VC Arcade titles, we've got a Super Famicom tactical RPG classic: Bahamut Lagoon (Super Famicom, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Galaxian (VC Arcade, 1 - 2 players, 800 Wii Points) Tecmo Bowl (VC Arcade, 1 - 2 players, 800 Wii Points) [VC in Brief] Märchen Maze (VC Arcade, 1 - 2 players, 800 Wii Points)

Tecmo Bowl (Arcade, 1 - 4 players, 600 Wii Points)We say: Beats the NES game with co-op and better graphicsAfter two weeks of forced hiatus, Nintendo has finally seen fit to restore VC in Brief. This week's Virtual Console release is the Arcade version of Tecmo Bowl. It bests its NES counterpart in almost every way, save for its two-team roster, of course. Pay witness to the spectacle above and watch as men attain glory on a 360 foot by 160 foot field. Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.

Tecmo has confirmed that Tecmo Bowl for Wii was put on hold and converted into Family Fun Football. A Tecmo rep informed G4 that "given the recent trend on the Wii and its target audience," Tecmo made a "business decision" to switch the Tecmo Bowl project into a "family oriented football game." For now, Tecmo Bowl for Wii is "indefinitely on hold."However, there is good news for Xbox 360 owners, as a Tecmo Bowl for Xbox Live Arcade is in the works for early 2010. There are currently no details on the game, but there may be some information next week at E3. Wii owners who were looking forward to Tecmo Bowl for the console may want to pick up its second-cousin thrice removed: Family Fun Football.

When I had received my copy of Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff for review, I was ecstatic. You see, I spent quite a bit of time with Tecmo Bowl and Super Tecmo Bowl when I was growing up, so I wanted to see how this revival held up. After putting it through its pace, Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff is kind of, well ... kind of a mixed bag. It does some things very well, but hasn't corrected all of the problems that plagued the first two games.%Gallery-23836%
