"Game of the Year" contender The Walking Dead's first episode is currently free on the Xbox Marketplace. IGN believes it'll be available like that until the new year. We've contacted Telltale to confirm, but we're not sure how quick the response will be in their shambling post eggnog consumption state. The Walking Dead has already started collecting year-end awards for crafting a classic adventure game with an intense narrative. Here's a chance to play the first episode without it taking a bite out of your wallet, or shoulder...or neck.

We're rolling right up to Christmas next week, which means 'tis the season for big discounts and freebies on App Store titles, as publishers try to climb up in the charts going into the big gift-giving event. Kingdom Rush (which some say is the best tower defense game on the App Store) is now free, and the team would also like you to know that it's entered the game in the Steam Greenlight program, if you'd like to support it over there. 2K Games is having a great big sale, featuring Borderlands Legends for just US$0.99, Civ Rev and Sid Meier's Pirates for 99 cents as well (which is pretty amazing), along with a few other titles at the same price. Telltale's The Walking Dead Game is winning acclaim all over the gamingsphere, with plenty of Game of the Year nods already, and the company has decided to give the first episode of the title away for completely free on the App Store. Download this one right now if you haven't played it yet -- if you're a fan of zombies or just really well-made mature games, you won't regret it. Telltale has also got quite a few other games on sale, including Puzzle Agent, the Monkey Island series and almost all of its other episode titles, all for just 99 cents. Cut the Rope HD is just a buck right now. Almost all of Gameloft's games are on sale as well, for just 99 cents. The Settlers HD and Nova 3 are probably the biggest standouts, but there are a lot of options there. Rodeo Games' Hunters: Episode 1 is also on sale, as is Hunters 2. Whew! And we've only just started this week. Stay tuned for lots more gigantic sales as the week goes on.

The Walking Dead retail version has been pushed back a week in North America, now scheduled to launch on December 11. The standard and collector's editions were originally slated to hit in physical form on December 4. We assume the undead don't shuffle as quickly as Telltale originally thought. The standard edition includes all five episodes on-disc for $30, while the collector's edition runs $70 and features the full game along with the first 48 issues of the comic in an exclusive version of The Walking Dead Compendium One, all wrapped up in a special box.The Walking Dead will be available at all participating retail locations for PS3 and Xbox 360, but the PC version is sold only at Best Buy.

Stay after the credits of The Walking Dead Episode 5: No Time Left.I don't care what decisions you made throughout the episode, and I don't care how many people you killed, saved or sacrificed in all of the previous episodes combined. I don't care if you played Lee as a passive leader or a vengeful one, compassionate or sterile or practical, or if you think the entire series sucks – stay after the credits of the final episode. To cut off the credits of this installment early is tantamount to taking a bathroom break one minute before Darth Vader mutilates Luke in Cloud City, or Bruce Willis realizes he hasn't spoken to another person in weeks. The moment is brief, as is the entire episode, but believe me, you won't feel cheated. After all, Telltale warned you: There really is No Time Left.%Gallery-171482%

  • The Walking Dead Episode 3 review: The importance of high fives

It's becoming difficult to write about Telltale's The Walking Dead. We're on episode three of five now and the story is climbing the rising action mountain in typical zombie apocalypse fashion: People die. Spirits break. Minds melt. It's difficult to write a cohesive review with this level of spoiler-inherent drama, and it's even harder with Telltale's individualized gameplay mechanics. Each decision can lead a player down a unique path, and with all the choices combined it feels as if no two people will play precisely the same plot.I could very well review a different story here from the one you play, but the game itself is cohesive across all potential plot lines, in mechanics, direction, writing and design. Regardless of how anyone travels through The Walking Dead Episode 3: Long Road Ahead, it's apparent that this is a solid – and gruesome – game.%Gallery-163474%

The Walking Dead Episode 3: Long Road Ahead finds Lee and the gang in a familiar location – and no, it's not another farm. After holing up at the motel, the group is forced to move out of Macon, a feat that presents a new set of problems and a ton of fresh zombies. Figuratively fresh, that is.The above video teases the drama, gore and (gasp!) sexual tension of the third episode. If we may be so bold, we suggest watching it to at least the 1:17 mark.Long Road Ahead is set to drop "very soon," Telltale's Job Stauffer posts on Facebook, along with the following image of Lee battling a pilot zombie.%Gallery-163474%

Telltale confirmed that more games in its The Walking Dead series will be developed after the launch of the fifth and final episode in the current season. The company's Senior VP of Marketing Steve Allison said the "first episodic game series based on The Walking Dead has sold nearly 1.7 million episodes to consumers in just our first 8 weeks with no signs of slowing down," in a statement to Polygon. Telltale plans on launching the third episode of its current The Walking Dead season in August. Allison added, "Following the digital release of our fifth episode we will also be coming to North American retail shortly thereafter and this will not be the last The Walking Dead game series that we do."

  • The Walking Dead: Episode 2 review: It's about people

As a franchise, The Walking Dead has taught me plenty: Don't use a gun when you can use a crossbow, you can't trust anyone (especially your friends), and everyone you love will die, probably violently and with little dignity. Telltale's The Walking Dead: Episode 2 - Starved for Help has added to that wisdom with one more important, life-altering lesson: Don't reformat your computer without backing up the save files of a game that is heavy on story and individual choices. When I finished Episode 1 on May 1, I was proud of myself for choosing all of the minority actions, ready to set off on a unique storyline for the four following installments. When I reformatted my computer on May 12, it failed to cross my mind that maybe I should check my Steam files first. This is a lesson I won't soon forget.Luckily, unlike many of the characters in The Walking Dead, I get to live and learn, and to begin a fresh story with random choices in the second episode. I have a pretty terrible memory, so I figured I'd be able to assimilate any arbitrarily generated choices with reality fairly easily – any of them except one. The climax of the first episode presents players with a high-tension, life-and-death (literally) decision, and I knew that I had ended the game with Doug, the robot enthusiast, by my side. If Starved for Help didn't start me with my little robot-loving, nerd buddy, I'd flip. Fortunately for my blood pressure, I got Doug on the first boot-up, and all was well.As well as surviving the zombie apocalypse can be, anyway.%Gallery-149821%

Despite some launch setbacks with its last Walking Dead episode, Telltale Games wants to reassure fans that the third episode in the series – "Long Road Ahead" – launches in "the middle of August." The company's blog announced as much in an apologetic letter, where a company rep said, "Although we can't give you an exact date at this time, we can say that episode three will be ready in the middle of August, and that we and our partners will do all we can to release all platforms and regions as close together as possible."The Walking Dead's episodic series received critical praise and commercial success since the first episode launched earlier this year. The game's third episode is set for launch this August, with two more planned episodes launching in subsequent months.

Despite being quite the success on PSN, Journey didn't take the top spot on the PSN and PS3 download charts for May. No, that honor goes to The Walking Dead – the first episode in Telltale's newest game managed to topple last month's top dog I Am Alive, and was followed by Journey and PixelJunk Shooter (thanks to a sale) in May, respectively. On the PS Vita side, Mortal Kombat managed to best all comers, unseating Escape Plan, which fell to third place. Taking second was Table Top Tanks, the AR tank battle game that debuted in late May.
