Joshua Linden gave an extensive post-mortem on last week's software deployment and problems. Linden Lab neither confirmed nor denied that they opened an office in China, but hint that something is in the wind. A new release candidate (the first in the 1.18.5 series) was released with the first part of the new search interface, which revealed some interesting new web-services.

Today in Second Life there was: 22,025 new signups bringing the total to 10,856,858 signups. A peak concurrency of 55,946 at 1:45PM, and a minimum concurrency of 28,463 at 2:10AM. There was a short burst of problems with grid stability in the very early hours of the morning, which, though quite hampering did not affect large numbers of users. A bug relating to object pricing has recently come to light. Linden Lab say they are working on the matter most urgently. A new preview of the Dazzle project is available. Word on the street (alright - by reading Linden Lab announcements closely) is that we're expecting either a new Windlight release or a new Search release (or perhaps both) with the 1.18.5 release candidate sometime this week.

Median concurrency for the day was 41,671. The Grid Stability Index for the day was 2.23 (lower is better). A fellow is selling an SL related guidebook (PDF) on eBay using images belonging to others without their permission. He claims to have express permission from Linden Lab, but others have claimed that before. We've asked Linden Lab, and expect a reply early next week. Early morning problems on the grid, followed by problems later on the grid.

NCI held their benefit auction and dance, which proved to be a great success.

Second Life started the new day with early morning network problems, and the transaction history irregularities of recent days became a full-scale outage of that reporting system not long after dawn. The preparation for today's upgrade went wrong, then very wrong. So wrong, that it looks like Linden Lab will be having another go at it tomorrow. Oh, and stipends didn't get paid out either. Word came down the wires about a massive purchase of a miniscule stake in Linden Lab. We're giving away Second Life books! Yeah! Linden Lab announced the phasing out of the last of the Class 3 servers. libsecondlife v0.3 has been released and is available now.

Today in Second Life there was: 24,360 new signups bringing the total to 10,664,097 signups. A peak concurrency of 53,476 at 3:35PM, and a minimum concurrency of 29,677 at 1:20AM. Very smooth operating day today, although part of the Linden Lab data feeds (active users for the last 60 days) failed to update again today. It's definitely up on the last good sample, however. After an ... enthusiastic difference of opinion, the World Stock Exchange (WSE) and the Midas Group are accusing each other of incompetence, false-dealing, wrongdoing, maliciousness and so forth. Pick a player and choose at least one of the above. Suffice to say Midas and the WSE are slinging loads of exciting mud at each-other. The Second Life Community Convention (SLCC) announced their location for next year. Tampa, Florida is to be the site for SLCC08. A discussion on griefers in both Second Life and Real Life classes. One of the strangest press-releases I've received - surely these people must be joking.

Today in Second Life there was: 23,932 new signups bringing the total to 10,638,600 signups. A peak concurrency of 52,793 at 3:45PM, and a minimum concurrency of 25,544 at 1:30AM. Median concurrency for the day was 41,563. The Grid Stability Index (broken link due to a technical issue. See below) for the day was 2.23 (lower is better). The Second Life grid suffered from two large-scale failures today. First, part or all of the San Francisco colocation facility went dark, knocking 1,110 Second Life simulators offline. Taking place in the early hours of the morning, there was not as great an impact to users as the ISP services failure suffered through the afternoon. OnRez delivered an optional update to their custom Second Life viewer, though this was marred somewhat by a temporary site failure. Launches never go smoothly, and we've had a bit of a glitch with the Second Life Insider content that we link back to. You see, the RSS feed for SLI was supposed to be redirected over to the Second Life category here on Massively. In a bit of an eleventh hour cock-up, the whole side got redirected back here, breaking the content links we've got back to that site, and comments for posts there and so forth. The Massively team offers apologies. We're trying to get this fixed up as soon as possible - but it might not be able to be sorted until Monday. We're very sorry for the problem and will restore that site and its content as soon as possible. [UPDATE: 10:30AM ET - The issue with the broken redirect is sorted out, and older content is now viewable again]
