Destiny tops PS4 downloads in 2014
Bungie's Destiny topped the PlayStation Store's PS4 best-sellers list for all of 2014, Sony revealed today. The store's top sellers on the current-generation console don't include many surprises; Grand Theft Auto 5 took the second spot, followed by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Minecraft and The Last of Us Remastered to round out the top five. GTA 5 was the most purchased PS4 game in the month of December. As for PS3 games, Minecraft led all purchases on the system in 2014 on the PS Store, followed by GTA 5, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny and Battlefield 4. Likewise, the list of top-selling PS4 and PS3 add-ons are a mix of Destiny, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC for the most part; Battlefield 4 Premium and The Last of Us' Left Behind DLC swooped in to the third spot in the PS4 and PS3 lists, respectively. Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment was the highest-selling game last year on the PlayStation Store for Vita. IDC: iPhone becomes top-selling cellphone in Japan over the Fall quarter, gives Sharp a run for its money
Think the iPhone is popular in the States? Well, the device is taking off in Asia as well. Based on a report from research firm IDC Japan, Apple snagged the largest share of mobile phone shipments in the country for the quarter at 26.6%, ending the market dominance of local manufacturers. Popularity of the iPhone 4S rose during the period from October to December and propelled the device maker past Fujitsu / Toshiba's mark of 18.3% and third place Sharp, coming in at 15.7%. Sharp still owned the top spot for 2011, though, with 20.1% of total shipments while Apple finished the year third with 14.2%. Dear Esther turned a profit in just 5 hours, 30 minutes
Last year Indie Fund voted to support Dear Esther, a rebuild of the popular Half-Life 2 mod, and it gave developer thechineseroom $55,000 in one lump sum. Indie Fund had its reservations: In an email to thechineseroom's Dan Pinchbeck before handing over the money, Indie Fund said the Steam audience may not understand Dear Esther and it proposed a release on PSN instead. This didn't happen, and thankfully so.Dear Esther recouped Indie Fund's $55,000 investment yesterday in just 5 hours and 30 minutes, selling 16,000 copies and becoming the top-selling title on Steam for the entire day. This means all the sales now are going directly to thechineseroom, whether to fund another game, add to this one or take a team-building sky-diving trip, we'll have to wait and see.
US phone sales in October: Curve still in the driver's seat
It's a shame AvianResearch and NPD can't meet up over a couple whiskey sours, figure out a game plan, and go forward with a unified tabulation method for their research -- but until that happens, we're probably going to have to deal with NPD claiming the iPhone 3G is the best-selling phone in the US and AvianResearch saying differently. Anyhoo, RIM's Curve joined forces across AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile to keep its coveted spot atop the list (and with the 8900 waiting in the wings, this can only mean good things for the Curve's future here). Notably new to the list are the G1 -- debuting in the number 7 spot -- and the HTC Touch Diamond, hanging in there at number 10. Anyone care to wager on how the G1 will fare here over the next few months?
The top-selling games in the US over the last 15 years
Forbes, with data supplied by NPD, has released a list of the top-selling games in the US over the last 15 years. NPD only began tracking data 15 years ago, so there may be an outlier from the '80s or early '90s, but it appears the industry really ramped up this millennium, with the top games all being released after 2001.*Holding on to the top title -- and we imagine not for very much longer -- is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with 9.43 million units sold. Surprisingly, Guitar Hero III isn't too far behind with 8.2 million. Madden titles occupy four of the top ten spots. Although they do have different titles, they are arguably the same game. NPD's data shows that Pokemon Red and Blue combined sold 3.1 9.9 million units. Nintendo's DS overtakes PlayStation 2 in lifetime Japanese sales
We already knew Nintendo's DS was quite the popular handheld, and while the PSP recently overtook it in Japanese hardware sales, the most recent numbers show that the Big N's famed DS has actually rocketed above the mighty PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales (in Japan). Notably, the numbers do combine DS and DS Lite units, but there's no mention of how the systems stack up worldwide. Nevertheless, the feat is a fairly impressive one when you consider how much longer the PS2 has been available compared to the DS, and unless Sony somehow lightens the PS2 load even further and starts bundling them in with cereals, we doubt it will reclaim the top spot anytime soon.[Via DSFanboy, thanks J]
Nintendo declares DS sales victory for 2007
With 20 days left before the Vogon construction fleet end us the end of 2007, Nintendo announced the Nintendo DS is the top-selling video game system of the year with 6 million sold in the US. According to the company's calculations, that's one sold every five seconds. In one of his last quotes as part of Nintendo, Bermuda-bound Nintendo exec. George Harrison says the success of the handheld is its appeal to core and casual gamers. He says the DS's momentum will continue to propel the company in 2008. According to Nintendo, the DS has increased sales in the US every year since its launch in Nov. 04.Just to give a little perspective to how important the holiday season is to the industry, if the DS sold 6 million units this year, then it made 10% of those sales during Thanksgiving week. NPD data is expected this Thursday for the month of November and the numbers should be big. If the last few months have been any indication, it's going to be a good holiday for the industry in general.
