Hey, TUAW TV Live fans! The last-ever TUAW TV Live has been moved to tomorrow -- July 31, 2014 -- since my wife "Bionic Barb" is having the second of two eye surgeries today. Be sure to join us for the last time tomorrow afternoon at 5 PM ET. I'll be joined by my lovely co-host Shawn Boyd and the regular cast of characters in the chat room. Since we've never let the lack of a topic stop us from talking for an hour, expect us to just talk about... whatever. Be there. Aloha.

    07.23.2014

It's the penultimate TUAW TV Live, one of your last chances to watch the hosts talking about everything in general and nothing in particular. Today we'll talk a bit about the OS X Yosemite general public beta (and things to watch for), the WSJ "rumor news" of Apple supplier orders for next-generation iPhone parts, and more. My guest host today is the lovely and versatile @verso, sitting in for @docrock who is -- as we speak -- flying from HNL to SAN for ComicCon. To watch the show and take part in the chat, just scroll down a tiny bit, log into the chat room, and be sure to press the "play" button on the video window around 5 PM to watch the stream. If you don't have time to watch the complete show today, come back to this post later or first thing tomorrow when we'll have the recording available for your viewing pleasure. As TUAW Talkcast listeners and Ask TUAW Live viewers already know, all of the TUAW podcasts -- video and audio -- will be ending by July 31, 2014. That means that including today, we have just three more chances to get together. So drop everything and watch today's show, OK? We have some fascinating news to discuss, with Apple and IBM joining forces to give Big Blue's enterprise customers a taste of the Apple fruit. To watch the show and take part in the chat, just scroll down a tiny bit, log into the chat room, and be sure to press the "play" button on the video window around 5 PM to watch the stream. It's a US holiday week, which means that some of us at TUAW will be taking a few days off from the daily deluge of Apple news and reviews to spend time in the warm summer weather enjoying ourselves. Before we do that, though, we're going to hang out with the chat room crowd on TUAW TV for an hour today and just shoot the breeze about the Apple news of the past few days. To watch the show and take part in the chat, just scroll down a tiny bit, log into the chat room, and be sure to press the "play" button on the video window around 5 PM to watch the stream. 06.04.2014

This week, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be talking about the news coming out of San Franciso at the Apple World Wide Developer Conference. Sure, we all know about iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, but what about some of the details that are starting to emerge? It certainly appears that Apple has really decided that this WWDC is all about fine-tuning the user experience for Apple customers. To watch the show and take part in the chat, just scroll down a tiny bit, log into the chat room, and be sure to press the "play" button on the video window around 5 PM to watch the stream. If you don't have time to watch the complete show today, come back to this post later when we'll have the recording available for your viewing pleasure. Update: This post has been updated with an embed of the local recording of the show that we make for backup. Due to bandwidth issues that occurred during the show, many viewers were unable to see the show in its entirety. We apologize for the inconvenience. 05.28.2014

On Monday morning, June 2, 2014, a bunch of Apple execs are going to take to the stage at Moscone Center West in San Francisco to share the company's latest with developers. A lot of us would love to see new devices from the company; new product categories we haven't even dreamed of and that the rumor sites never had a clue were coming. But let's be realistic -- Apple is a company that admits to never making a big decision without saying "No" a lot to new ideas. So will we see something new? On today's TUAW TV Live, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I are going to rehash some of the rumors that have been banging around the blogosphere for the past several months and give 'em our best guess for a probability of actually being announced at WWDC 2014. It's sure to be a lot of fun, and you can join in on the discussion by joining the chat room. • TUAW TV Live: MacBook Air speed bumps and more

    04.30.2014

No big news to talk about this week, but at least Apple saw fit to introduce new MacBook Air models with slightly faster CPUs and better battery life. So until we have our Apple-branded Mr. Fusion-powered flying cars, iWatches, or 3D holographic displays on our iPhones, we'll have to talk about the more mundane changes in the Apple ecosystem. My co-host Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be taking to the airwaves and chat room at our regular time. Be sure to take part in the chat, and also see if you can answer our weekly trivia question and win a prize! And guess what? Today you don't have to go to a new page to watch the live stream or take part in the chat room. Our recent redesign made the width of the column just a wee bit wider, so we can fit all of our tools into the regular post. So to watch the show and take part in the chat, just scroll down a bit, log into the chat room, and be sure to press "play" to see what's happening. • TUAW TV Live: Form factors and other delights

    by

    04.16.2014

All the talk these days about forthcoming Apple devices seems to focus on one thing -- form factors, AKA "how big the screen is". With the iPhone, there's a lot of talk about a larger display, and despite the fact that the iPad already comes in two main sizes (mini and Air), people are making comments about an even larger form factor. So, Doc and I will take this as our starting point for our usual rambling discussion today, then moving off to the rest of our fun things including our software and hardware picks of the week, our tips of the week for either iOS or OS X, and of course the weekly trivia contest! Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be getting the show started at around 5 PM EDT today. Note that things are a wee bit different from in the past -- you'll still need to visit us over on the dedicated stream and chat page at http://tuaw.com/tuawtvlive -- but the stream will be coming to you via YouTube. There are some nice things there, like a screen that will tell you how long until we're going live, or if we're a bit late you'll see a "starting soon" screen. This week's show will be embedded in the space below as soon as possible. You can also watch past episodes of TUAW TV Live on YouTube.

Ahhh, spring is in the air. The birds are singing, the trees are budding, and a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of WWDC announcements. Well, it's probably a bit premature to start thinking about what might (or might not) be announced at this year's World Wide Developer Conference, but that's going to be just one of the topics today on TUAW TV Live. We'll have some new weekly features, including our picks of the week for hardware and apps, a trivia question, and maybe even a tip or two to make life easier for you. Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be getting the show started at around 5 PM EDT today. Note that things will be a wee bit different -- you'll still need to visit us over on the dedicated stream and chat page at http://tuaw.com/tuawtvlive -- but the stream will be coming to you via YouTube. With apologies to David Bowie for mutilating his lyrics in a TUAW TV Live promo post headline. Changes are afoot at TUAW TV Live. By next week, we expect to have the show broadcasting on YouTube Live and will then start adding some new features to make the show more interactive. This week should be our last using the current broadcast mechanism. Today we'd like to get some input from viewers on what you'd like to see added to the show, while still maintaining the co-hosted format. To join in to watch the live feed and participate in the chat, just click here. You'll join us on the AOL On Network. If you can't watch the entire show today, come back to this page within 24 hours to see the latest video below. Past shows are also available on the TUAW YouTube channel. In the meantime, if you didn't see last week's show live streamed from the media room at Macworld/iWorld 2014 with Mike Rose, Doc Rock and myself (showing up late...), then give it a view below.

Although a slight weather delay may keep me from starting off the show with Doc today, we're both planning on gracing your computer and tablet screens later today with a live show from San Francisco. The team is in the Bay Area for Macworld/iWorld 2014, which officially begins tomorrow and runs through Saturday (the MacIT conference started today). The Expo is usually a whirlwind of talks, new product announcements, podcasts, and some amazing parties. If you want to see what we officially have planned, be sure to check out the schedule here. The TUAW-logoed Aloha shirts are packed, we're getting the giveaways boxed up, and we're making plans for the annual Apple lovefest known as Macworld/iWorld. TUAW will be wandering about the show floor, hitting the parties, and bringing you all the news on the best new products and apps for your Apple gear. You'll probably see a lot of me and TUAW TV Live cohost Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd wandering around, so if you're at the expo be sure to stop us and chat a bit. Mike Rose and Victor Agreda will also be representing TUAW at the show, and former TUAWer Brett Terpstra will be speaking at the conference. So today, Doc and I are going to chat about what (and who) we want to see at Macworld/iWorld 2014, and hopefully Doc will show off one of the stylish shirts. Join us in the chat room or we'll be very, very upset with you. Really. To join in to watch the live feed and participate in the chat, just click here. You'll join us on the AOL On Network. I'm back among the living this week, having somehow survived the viral crud that was causing me to lose my voice last week. That means that the wonderful Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be sending a flood of bits out today from the TUAW TV studios. Since I'm feeling so much better, I thought it would be a fun show to talk about all of the connected devices and apps that we use on a regular basis to keep ourselves somewhat healthy. Doc and I will regale you with stories and demos of our favorite connected gear, and we'd love to hear from you in the chat room to see what your favorites are. No sooner has my co-host Doc Rock arrived back from the Far East than I have to hand over the magic ring of power to him again. I have some sort of nasty infection that seems to have settled in my throat, and even though I managed to croak my way through another podcast yesterday, today my voice is in such bad shape that I can't talk for more than a few minutes without feeling and sounding like I've swallowed gravel. So your host for today will be the good Doctor, Mr. Shawn Boyd. I may get into the chat room just to make a digital appearance. I'll leave the topic(s) of discussion up to Doc for today. Sure, nobody reads anymore. But if you really want to become an expert in one topic or another, you need to pore over every word that's ever been published on the subject. Today, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will talk about those books and/or authors that we follow or admire, with a special focus on those favorite tomes that have made a difference in how we work or play. These books don't have to be technical in nature -- there are some histories of Apple, old books describing products that no longer exist and personal favorites that have little or nothing to do with coding or how to use our favorite tech.
