EarthLink and SK Telecom teaming up on cellphone service

earthlink

There hasn't been an announcement from either company about this yet, but the New York Times is reporting that EarthLink is going to team up with South Korean wireless carrier SK Telecom on a $400 million joint venture to offer cellphone service here in the States (EarthLink does already offer cellphone service for BlackBerry users). They're going to be leasing network capacity from both Sprint and Verizon, which makes sense, since those carriers use the same kind of wireless network that SK Telecom uses in South Korea. We don't have any more specifics about what they're planning, but can we say that we're officially getting our hopes up that SK Telecom will ship over some of those sweet EV-DO cellphones that never seem to make it over here?
