Mobile games to outsell console titles by year's end?

Despite existing impediments in mobile game adoption, mobile games distributor I-play speaking at this week's Leipzig Developer Conference in Germany declared that mobile gaming will overtake console gaming in sales by the end of the year. "This market will sell more games on mobile than traditional consoles in 2006... [it] will be the fastest growing segment of the total videogames industry," said company representative Stephane Labrunie.

The company also called mobile games "the definition of a true mass market" while referring to console gaming as a "niche market." No doubt the install base of cell phones is much greater than consoles, but can the potential mobile industry really outsell consoles by year's end? Maybe in the not-so-distant future but doubtful by the end of 2006.
