WoW Rookie: Mind your manners

New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW's newest players to the resources they need to get acclimated. Send us a note to suggest a WoW Rookie topic.

Building a good reputation for your characters is as easy as doing what mama always advised: mind your manners. The basics always apply: "please," "thank you," "Would you like to join a group for X?" Sometimes, though, what's expected in any given in-game situation may not be readily apparent.

WoW Rookie to the rescue! Make a good impression by getting savvy to the game's common social conventions. We've rounded up our best etiquette posts to help point you in the right direction.

Group Looting for Dummies Part 1
The easiest way to avoid that drama and get along with your PuG when the boss drops and it's time to roll for the blues and the purples is to know the ropes. With that in mind, here's a few pointers on loot policy in PuGs.

Group Looting for Dummies Part 2
Be considerate of others, and they'll be considerate of you. And if you do set up a nice agreeable loot system and don't get the piece you wanted, remember, it may drop for you next time. If you're lucky, some of these PuGgies might remember that you were a good sport and help you out on that run, too.

Ninja group invites are a no-no
There's almost nothing more confusing than receiving a random group or guild invite; it's just not something you want to do.

Ninja guild invites are a no-no, too
I find it extremely annoying when people open guild charter windows, invite me to groups, or trade with me without asking permission. I decline everything on principle, but some particularly forward individuals don't seem to get the message.

Message from a PuG groupmate
Dear PuG Member, Recently you've asked me to group with you. This is cool, and I appreciate being wanted. However, if you don't mind, could we go over a few dos and don'ts?

Lurting and how not to do it
No looting during combat: no "'lurting" allowed. That loot ain't going anywhere, and it's got your name all over it. Wait until all the sheep are dead and all the targets are down, and then right-click away and claim your goodies.

Is it ok to leave early?
What's an acceptable limit for a "GTG soon!" announcement? Would you go into a dungeon knowing you had to replace a member part way through?

If I should die before I wake
Should the healer (who already spends more on the run than anyone aside from the tank, has a more stressful job than any DPS and makes sacrifices for people they do not even know) be forced to make all the corpse runs?

When it's not working out
When you're unfortunate enough to find yourself in a bad group, how do you know when to cut your losses and call it quits? Do you flee at the first sign of trouble? Hang in until the group leader calls it quits? Or do you have some other breaking point?
