"Which battleground (including Wintergrasp) can provide the most honor for the least time spent? I guess the short answer is whatever battleground the faction on my server usually wins, but any other ideas?"
I've been thinking about this question a lot myself lately, since I'm leveling up a new toon to be my main (and Enhancement Shaman for those interested). In the process of leveling and gearing the toon I've identified key pieces of gear I want to get my hands on, and the mail melee DPS boots and the level 80 DPS honor ring are two of the main pieces of gear I want out of PvP.
The best way for me to get these pieces is to farm Wintergrasp a bit, and by a bit I mean a week of off-and-on playing, essentially whenever I feel like it and whenever there is a battle. On my server (a relatively high-pop one), it ends up that I can get about 3,000 to 5,000 honor per round of Wintergrasp – compared to about half that for other battlegrounds. I know that many other people across other servers share this experience, and it's likely due to the fact that Wintergrasp is "new" and "exciting."
But you are right in that the answer can vary between realms. Take a day and test out what works the best for you. But in general we've seen Wintergrasp provide a lot of honor for a very short amount of time.

"I had no experience of gaming before I joined WoW and find that I lack the skills for pvp fighting in arenas and battlefields, although I am very enthusiastic. What I would like to know is why there are no training areas for people like me? I know there is practice for arenas but I do not learn very much because I die too quickly. Any thoughts on this?"
Hi Jane-Marie, and welcome to WoW!
You're doing the right thing! The best way to get better at WoW is to practice in a variety of different situations, read some website and blogs, and pay close attention to the tooltips. You'll improve very quickly if you do that.
I recommend hitting up as many battlegrounds and Wintergrasp sessions as you can. You'll encounter all the different classes there and get a good understanding for what your character does and how it can interact and counteract other's abilities.
One thing I'd like to say though: don't worry about being a "noob" or "an idiot" or whatever other term the immature people will throw out at you for not knowing how to play the game yet. Everyone was new to this game at some point! Keep at it and soon enough you'll be two-shotting every Orc who laughs at your dead corpse!
