  • 5 Ways Tech Can Give Us Superpowers

As kids, we all dreamed about being superheroes with amazing powers that could let us do things no mere person could manage. We dreamed about flying, having super hearing or X-ray vision, jumping huge heights or being able to run through brick walls without pause. When we get older, we realise that these powers are beyond us and any person – or are they? Now, technology may be stepping into those dreams and offering ways to get those superpowers that we always dreamed about. Super strength Super strength makes it to the top of the list because it is the most likely to happen. Engineers have already created robotic assist systems that are used to help military combatants become stronger and more efficient while a similar idea can help the elderly regain their mobility. One bionics company CFO believes that his company can and will create something along the lines of the Iron Man suit while the US Army has created something called Warrior Web to limit musculoskeletal injury when carrying lots of equipment. Even Lockheed Martin have made an exoskeleton suit called the HULC to help boost the strength and reduce physical stress on workers. Being invisible Superheroes often have the ability to make themselves invisible and other characters, namely a certain famous young wizard, used special magical cloaks and other devices to achieve the same aim. Now we mere humans may be able to duplicate this ability thanks to research being carried out around the world. In June, a team in Singapore and China created a cloaking device that works on natural light and were able to 'hide' a cat and a fish from sight. There were limitations and definitely a long way to go before it is available on the high street (if ever) but for a moment, that cat achieved one of our dreamt-of superpowers like those of a superhero. Super vision Melting things with laser vision is probably beyond us but having a computer built into our eyeball may not be. Tech giants Google have recently patented an idea for a computer that is injected into the eyeball to process information directly into the line of sight. And that's not all – it will potentially let you listen to radio through the computer and even store files on the tiny processor. Nor are Google the only ones working on enhanced vision – an MIT professor and her students are working on a way to allow people to see through walls using a system similar to radar and sonar. Mind control Or rather, controlling things with the mind as a group of researchers put it in the issue of the Journal of Neural Engineering. Their project is to use a non-invasive EEG to allow people to control a quadcopter with the power of their mind alone. Thinking of a closed fist results in it turning right while two closed fists in the mind result in it flying upwards. The idea could allow paralysed people to move objects around themselves or even have control over mechanical limbs. Enhanced hearing A project from the Royal College of Art earlier this year showcased a mask that definitely looked like something out of a superheroes movie and comes with similar abilities – enhanced hearing and possible vision in the long term. The mask helps to fine tune the bombardment of sounds we hear all of the time and allows us to focus on a single sound for targeting hearing. Possible applications include for schools to allow students to focus purely on the teacher with distractions from other noises around them though the hardware will need a bit of work from its current bulky and slightly terrifying form!

  • 5 of the Most Common Ways Hackers Gain Access

Regardless of the type of website that you run, without doubt one of the biggest concerns is that hackers gain access. Rarely a day goes by when there isn't a new story about some company being hacked, from banks through to retailers and many more. Combatting the hackers can be a time consuming job as well as a constant worry. But what are the 5 most common ways hackers gain access to your website? DDOS Attack A distributed denial of services of DDoS attack is where the server or the machines operating on it become unavailable to its users. The entire offline system can be compromised by the hacker or a specific part of it transformed for their own nefarious uses. The idea behind DDoS is that you have a temporary interruption to the website or sometimes that it is completely disabled. One of the most frequent ways to do this is to send hundreds of URL requests to the site or a page on it across a very small period of time. This creates a bottleneck in the system because the server cannot handle them all. Phishing scams We've all received those emails that claim to be from someone we know or a company we use, sometimes even our bank or a company like PayPal. They almost look legitimate in some cases but many times, our 'something's off' buzzer lights up and we don't do what the email wants us to do – usually click a link of some form. And this is a good sense of paranoia because these are what are called phishing scams. They are one of the oldest tools used by hackers and around 400 in every 100,000 people who receive one don't have that paranoia buzzer and click the link. This then allows the hacker access to the website, system or even bank account – because you provide them with the information needed to do this. Password hacking How many of us get a new device and don't change the factory password settings? Businesses are just as guilty of this as domestic users and this can leave a big gap that hackers can just walk through. There are sites out there that provide the default settings for a vast number of devices including routers that this makes it relatively easy for hackers to get into your system. Here are some of the most common The best passwords make a combination of letters and numbers with special characters thrown in. Businesses should also change important passwords every 30-60 days to reduce the chance that they will be discovered and hacked. Remote code execution attacks A remote code execution attack can happen either on the server or client side and is a security weakness. There are a number of vulnerable components that hackers can use to gain access to a site. These include libraries, remote directors that aren't monitored, frameworks and even software modules that use an authenticated user access system. Hackers throw various attacks at these including malware, scripts and small command lines, all of which can extra information. Fake wireless access points This last one effects people when they are working away from the office or workplace but are connecting to the business' servers. Hackers create a fake wireless access point that may look like free Wi-Fi provided in a café or shopping centre and instead, collects data when the person logs onto the internet through it. They might trick people into providing their business log on in formation, email addresses and passwords or other information. Never trust public Wi-Fi spots for anything more mundane than reading the latest online news!

  • 5 of the Best Places to Find Out About New Android Apps

Finding out the real story behind a new app can sometimes require a little detective work. Of course, the Android App store is going to tell you it is great and the people who have created the app will rave about it. But where are the best places to find out about new Android apps that are neutral and offer a real opinion? Tech Radar Tech Radar is an all-rounder, a website that reviews everything from apps and smartphones to TVs and in-car tech. They review the various tech themselves and then write up their opinions based on what they find. If you are looking for the best new apps, reviews on the latest products as well as advice on problems with different gadgets and even the latest gossip and news on forthcoming products, then it is worth checking out. Droidadda Droidadda is a little more app focused and has two main areas, Android apps and apps for PC. They look at all aspects of apps from the latest instant messenger apps through to what to do if your favourite app breaks down. They also have a big How To section filled with up to date advice about dealing with problems including with popular apps such as Snapchat, Facebook and more. Finally, they have a Top List section where they group together apps for different operating systems and categories to allow people to browse through a group of similar apps when they are unsure which one they want. Geek Geek is focused primarily on games for Android, Apple, PS4 and more but also includes plenty of articles about other types of apps too. As well as the helpful top lists style articles, they also compile news articles about the latest topics affecting the world of smartphones and PCs, such as the Windows 10 upgrade and the latest news from Google. They also have dedicated areas for tablets as well as mobile, apps and a Geek Answers section to help deal with all those irritating problems smartphones often acquire. PC Mag Once a physical, printed magazine, PC Mag has been reborn as an online centre of all things technology including laptops, tablet, phones, printers and cameras. It also has a dedicated section for apps including top 10 articles and common questions answered style posts. In addition, there are sections comparing the latest phones and what apps works well with them, allowing users to find the perfect combination of device and software. They even have a security section that looks at the latest tools to protect your tech such as password managers. Tom's Guide Tom's Guide is another all-rounder that has sections covering smartphones, smart watches, gaming PCs, and smart home gadgets as well as camera, TVs, headphones and even fitness trackers such as Fitbit. Within their smartphones section is a wide range of comparison articles, looking at both the phones and the apps they use including topics such as the best phone for apps and the best gaming phone. While not specifically focused on apps, this website is great for comparing the basics and goes into a lot of detail to allow users to find the most information to make a choice. Conclusion When apps are free, it is simple to install them and delete them again if you don't like them but even free apps should be researched a little, in case they have been shown to cause operating problems for the device. And by looking at what the app does, you can save yourself the time of installing and deleting and use it instead to actually do whatever you wanted the app for originally.

  • How Tech is Changing Our Love Lives

Technology plays a major part in our lives from smartphones always being in hand through to cars that drive themselves and TVs that access the internet to find us programs to watch. Social media is without doubt one of the most pervasive examples, prominent in most people's lives. But how is tech changing our love lives? And is it for the better or worse? Meeting people If you ask people, many would say that meeting people is one of the big ways that tech is changing our love lives yet the figures in the UK, at any rate, are a little surprising. The State of the UK's Relationships survey last year showed that only 16% of couples between 16-34 had met their partner via an online portal and this figure unsurprisingly dropped to just 3% for those over 65. Part of this is that there is still some scepticism attached to using online dating tools. Yet websites such as Tinder are growing in popularity. People are learning to overcome the natural suspicion of someone online as the quality and accuracy of profiles increase. These sites also make it easier to meet people who have the same interests as we do. Of course, anyone can say they are interested in say, astronomy or gardening, when they are talking to you but if they put it in a profile before they know you exist, then it is more likely to be a genuine like or interest. Communicating with loved ones Perhaps one of the biggest changes due to technology is how we communicate with each other. All age groups express a greater connectivity with their partner due to smartphones, messenger apps and even text messages. A huge 79% of those people believed that this ability to communicate had improved their relationship. Around 85% of people under 35 use technology to talk to their partner every day and also believe that this has a positive effect. Sometimes this 'always connected' feeling can be a negative thing and creates the feeling of talking for talking's sake, without having anything really to say. In the early stages of relationships, people have even said they ended things because the person didn't text well or didn't respond quickly to instant messages. So it seems that as well as ambitions, long-term plans and shared interests, compatible tech standards appear to be on the list of attributes for a long-term partner. Behind closed doors If you mention the bad side of tech in relationships, most people will reference porn. It seems to be everywhere but this doesn't mean we are actually seeking it out. Only 23% of those spoken to in the recent report felt that online porn had damaged their relationship and nearly 20% thought it had actually been positive. Perhaps the most worrying area, particularly regarding the youngest tech users, is the sending of explicit material of ourselves to others, so called sexting. While couples apart can use these images to sustain intimacy and have fun, others have had a far more negative experience with the birth of 'revenge porn' and the problems it creates. After the recent fuss over the 'cheating' website Ashley Madison and its exposed client list, online cheating has been a big focus. Nearly half of those spoken to said they either had or had been tempted to cheat online, with the novelty of the experience being one of the key motivations. People also think that when things are virtual, they aren't 'real' and therefore do and say things that they wouldn't face to face. Conclusion Tech is a neutral thing that does simply what the user wants it to. Therefore, whether tech is changing our love lives for the positive or the negative is entirely down to how we use it.

  • 8 Ways to Improve Your Instagram Photos

If you love social media and also love a bit of photography, then Instagram is the perfect site for you. It is also a perfect way to boost your brand, be it a personal one or for a company. But getting the right photos are key to success on the site and here we look at ways to improve your Instagram photos for even better results. Get the right picture The great thing about digital photography is the quantity of pictures you can take without worrying about using up your film. Even memory these days is less of a worry with memory cards being easily available. The trick to getting the right picture is to take plenty and give yourself plenty to work with. Make use of the camera app on your phone as this will likely have a few default settings that let you try the picture in a few different ways. Consider the composition You don't need a course in photography to realise that your bedroom might look great but you don't need your lounge wear included in the image. So consider what is in the image and make sure you remove anything that doesn't have a benefit to it. Sometimes less is more so consider a simple and bland background that really highlights the foreground item, especially for product shots. Here are some good tips to get more instagram followers. Consider going horizontal When you are cropping your picture, don't fall into the trap of making everything square. Some photos naturally look better when they are horizontal or landscape orientation and there are a few that work best in vertical orientation, also called portrait for that reason. So don't assume that your picture has to be a neat square if the content doesn't fit into one correctly. Look at your focus Another element of composition is remembering that you don't always need to have the focus of the image in the centre. Use grid lines or simply image them and place the focus off centre, in a corner or even diagonally - this helps get better pictures. Get the right lighting If you are taking a shot of something, always consider the lighting. While editing can fix many problems, it needs something to work with. Many good Instagram photographers don't make use of the flash on their phone as it simply makes images look a little weird. But there are different fixes for an image that good smartphones let you apply before you take the picture so you can make the most of the natural conditions. Move, don't zoom Zooming is the speciality of the digital camera but with most smartphones, you can simply move the camera nearer to the object to get a close up. If you have a macro setting on your camera, then this is perfect but really good close ups can still be achieved by getting in there. Elbows as a tripod Other shots require you to be as steady as possible and if you don't have a little tripod in your back pocket, then use the natural option - your elbows. Brace yourself so that you move as little as possible to get the perfect still shot. You can even use this idea to get movement shots, swinging in one direction or the other. Use Instagram tools Instagram itself has tools that can help you get the best from your picture. One popular one is the straightening tool, allowing you to line up your image perfectly. It creates a horizontal line through an image and allows you to move it to line up with this. This straight line creates a naturally more appealing look to an image and therefore increases its appeal.

This robot can work through clogs very efficiently and get your gutters back in tip top shape. In addition, the robot works quickly; it can get through about 30 feet in less than ten minutes. In addition, the Looj comes with a belt clip, so you don't have to worry about trying to keep your balance while holding the Looj as you go up and down the ladder. After you are finished, rinse off the robot with a hose and then store it until the next time. Dinner Set & Dishwasher System This piece of technology makes cleaning up after meals easy. Pick up your forks, spoons, plates, glasses and more and put them in the dishrack. Add water and manipulate the holder to start the cleaning process. The results are incredible!

  • How Will Brexit Effect UK Tech Companies?

Prior to the Brexit vote, the UK's tech companies were virtually universally in favour of remaining within the EU. But now the vote has gone the other way, attention is turning to the effect it will have on businesses and what changes they may face in the near and long term future post-Brexit. Getting access to talent When asked before the vote why they wanted to stay within the EU, one of the top reasons that companies cited was access to the right talent. The current freedom of movement situation that the UK experiences as part of the EU is one area that looks set to change but is that chance as dramatic as it may first seem? For starters, while we will leave the EU, it seems likely we will remain within the EEA – the European Economic Area. This means that bringing people to work in the UK will continue to be possible. Added to that is the fact that the EU isn't the only place tech companies go to import talent from abroad. The current 'Exceptional Talent' visa was created with the tech sector in mind and looks set to remain a part of the UK's laws. And ask many tech companies where their overseas talent comes from, few will answer that it comes from the EU. The majority of them come from Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea as well as from the USA. This shouldn't change post-Brexit. The economic situation Already we are seeing the direct economic results of the Brexit decision with the fall of the pound against other currencies. Share prices have dropped and tech companies have felt this, although not as badly as banks. However, most people think that this dramatic drop will level out and while they may not go back to what they were before, things will move in an upward direction. Another element to the economic situation is the threat that the big companies might relocate, with Dublin being a top solution offered. English speaking, already home to companies such as Facebook, the Irish capital is advertising itself as an alternative to London with its Silicon Docks area and the neighbourhood already nicknamed Googletown. The government of Ireland even laid out a plan to spend around 2 million euros to attract new companies, though their focus is on central and southern Europe at the moment. However, the UK leaving the EU could actually effect Ireland's position on some key areas that could make the proposition not quite as rosy. For example, their efforts to keep the 12.5% tax rate will lose its biggest backer in the EU. And the Irish government's tough approach to big companies' tax payments may put some off making the switch. Funding sources Before the vote, there was a great deal of talk about deals falling through, funding sources drying up and a general stagnation in the country. But a week on from the vote and the majority of deals seem to have continued as if the vote hadn't happened. In fact, many of the big London venture capital companies have been quick to state that it is business as usual for them and their high reserves mean that there will be little change to their activities. Start-up companies may be the most concerned, thinking their opportunities have dried up but again, this hasn't proven true. Due to the international nature of the tech world, there are always plenty of opportunities and only a fraction of these come from the EU. Therefore, both funding and opportunities appear to be continuing as before and the strong thread of entrepreneurism in the UK means this isn't likely to change, even after Brexit.

  • 5 Awesome Ways VR Has Been Used in Marketing

Virtual Reality or VR has been sneaking up on us for a while now, gradually making an impression on our daily lives. With the new, more affordable headsets such as the Oculus Rift being available, an increasing number of people are considering VR to be something that has a place in their daily lives. This popularity has led to marketing companies considering the potential of the technology and here are five example of how VR has already been used in marketing. 4D driving with Hyundai If you have ever wanted to try out rallying but aren't so sure about the actual driving part, then Hyundai have created the perfect answer. For the World Rally Championships, they have created a 4D driving experience based around the Oculus Rift that will allow fans to feel as if they are really driving one of the company's rally cars around the course. The headset is worn alongside a motion platform that can even create up to 0.5g for a realistic feel when using the simulator. Join the cast of Suicide Squad To promote the release of their new Suicide Squad movie, Warner Bros have created a new VR experience that will be available at a number of events over the next weeks and months. These include the San Diego Comic Con, taking place at the Hard Rock Hotel. While exact details are being hidden by the company until the event, it is believed that the experience will use VR headsets to allow fans to immerse themselves in the movie, experience live-action fighting and other events and even get a tattoo! There is also a cosplay content that started last month where fans can create their own version of the characters for a chance to win a visit to the Comic Con event. Visit Pluto with the New York Times Following the amazing images of the planet Pluto that were released earlier this year, the New York Times distributed some 300,000 Google Cardboard viewers to subscribers of their newspaper. The viewers were used with a VR video called Seeking Pluto's Frigid Heart and meant you could explore the planet, seeing it as if you were on the New Horizons probe that flew past the outer planets. They also released another VR piece that involved climbing the spire of 1 WTC in New York, allowing subscribers a glimpse of the city from the newest and most amazing view point in a way that a normal photography cannot manage. View a destination with Qantas Ever wondered what a place looked like before you booked to go there? Well, Qantas is now offering the chance to view certain locations through a VR headset. Their use of the new technology started with a pilot program that offered headsets to travellers in first class to show a number of destinations including the Great Barrier Reef. This is now being extended to locations such as the Kakadu National Park, offering travellers inspiration for their next journey and whetting their appetites. Travel to exotic locations with Marriott Marriot Hotels made use of VR technology to showcase exotic locations in the hope that people would be inspired to book their hotels in these places with the use of a phone booth type idea. People could step into the booth, don a VR headset and see what it would be like to be sitting on a beach in Hawaii as well as visiting locations such as China, Rwanda and even Chile. Their plan was then extended to using the headsets in hotel rooms to show guests other locations that the company could offer accommodation, again to tempt them to consider making a booking.

  • 3 Amazing Pieces Car Techs For Today and 3 For The Future

Car technology is moving on at a rapid rate and we've seen amazing changes in the last few years. We've come to a point where many cars are connected to the web as standard and there are currently some amazing gadgets in our cars - so here are 3 available now and 3 likely to be seen in the near future. Infotainment Interface Infotainment has no industry-standard, which makes it difficult to judge. Automakers and car buyers are struggling with this difficult tech. Tapping away at your iPhone while sitting at home is a lot different than trying to use it to navigate, control audio playback or use in-car smartphone apps. There are two infotainment interfaces that are consistently easy to use, the Volvo Sensus Connect and the Toyota Entune. The Toyota system as a configurable interface and the Volvo system as a large display area. We've entered a time where technology is set to be disrupted within the auto and other spheres. Will Apple and Google Invade Your Car? It looks like 2016 will be the year that Apple and Google will finally have their in-car iOS and Android system up and running. You'll finally be able to plug your smartphone into your car and access your apps while on the move. Vauxhall, Ford, Volvo, and VW will be able to support one or both of these systems. Soon, after-market units will hit the stores and everyone will be able to retrofit this technology. Early reviews reveal that the Android Auto app has the best smartphone integration. Apple is committing to this project and has a number of developers working on their car-friendly apps. No More Parking Parking can suck and can be tricky in a busy area. Parking can lead to smashed allow wheels and embarrassment when you don't do it correctly. That's why many people are happy to hand their keys to the valet. Renault and Ford, along with some other premium auto brands own systems that can find reverse and parallel parking spots and then use cameras and sensors, the auto can help you steer into the parking space. Could it get much easier? Well, actually, it can. Mercedes-Benz and BMW have created tech that only required a prod from your smartphone to get perfect parking results every time. The BMW has the Remote Control Parking will be installed on the 7-series, which is due to roll out next years. The car will be able to autonomously reverse into spaces and pull out. The Mercedes-Benz offers the Remote Parking Pilot does the same thing but for perpendicular parking. The Remote Parking Pilot will be available on the E-Class, due out in 2016/2017. 3 For The Future Driver Override Systems This is another autonomous technology. A car with this system will disregard your commands and make its own decision in order to keep you safe. Currently, there are cars that will stop if you fail to apply your brakes. But by the year 2020, your car will be able to apply the brake even if your foot if pushing down on the gas pedal. The rapid increase sensor will make braking a priority, giving your car the final say in the matter. Many cars in recent years have gone from keys to keyless start and entry. Soon you will have a key-fob-less entry and start. You will unlock and start your car using your fingerprint, or eyeball. Most likely fingerprint technology will prevail. This is similar to the latest in cell phone security., where you can use your fingerprint or eye to unlock your phone. Sheet Thin Batteries Batteries for electric cars and heavy and bulky. It can be difficult for manufacturers to place a large number of batteries needed, while keeping the car well-balanced. An increase in batteries can add more power to the car. It would be nice to be able to have the batteries hidden in plain sight, as part of the aesthetics of the car. These batteries can be panels installed in the car's interior or exteriors. The batteries need to be thin and bendable, so manufacturers do not need to compromise the car's appearance. Technology has a long way to get before this vision becomes a reality, but it's well worth it.These batteries could revolutionize the electric car industry.

  • 5 Awesome Tech Conferences you need to Know About

The world of tech is one that waits around for no man, or no technology for that matter and as we all know the big changes are often showcased at the big global conferences. So, let's take a look at the big tech, marketing and consumer showcases that you should consider attending. UnGagged One of the premier marketing conferences in the world, UnGagged takes place twice in the year and on both sides of the Atlantic - in London and Las Vegas. The conference really pushes the real life marketing agenda and takes great pride in showing those that attend the sort of marketing that works in real life and not just on paper. It has an array of top notch talent from the very best in a variety of fields within marketing. The very recent London conference featured Marcus Tandler and Marcus van den Beld among other prolific people in the field. Mobile World Congress The Mobile World Congress claimed to be the biggest mobile event of 2016. It may have been, with over 2,000 exhibitors, panel discussions, keynotes, and thought leaderships workshops. Innovation and notable achievement in mobile space were recognised at the Global Mobile Awards programme. The Mobile World Congress conference had all the publicity it needed to claim it was the biggest event last year with the release of the LG G5, Samsung S7 Edge as well as a raft of other items at the show. HustleCon HustleCon began only three years ago, the idea being to help startups create successful businesses. It's a conference that threads between the techie and non techie attendee and has grown spectacularly in the last couple of years. This conference is for the tech industry, but you don't need to be into the jargon. HustleCon strikes a balance that makes it a good environment for both techie and non-techie attendees. Previous attendees include Arum Kang and Matthew Brimer, both known for starting successful businesses with a low budget. The NextGen Summit The NextGen Summit's premier conference was held in 2015. This event is for millennial entrepreneurs. The NextGen Summit, with its corporate partners, including Verizon and Uber, helped startups raise over $1 million. In addition, the event produced dozens of partnerships. There were an estimated 17,000 live stream and in-person attendees at the conference. The program was headed by 19-year olds Justin Lafazan and Dylan Gambardella, the team "that can't legally drink". In 2016, the Summit promises the Deans of Admissions to the top 25 colleges, TIME 25 Most Influential Inventors and activists and Forbes 30 Under 30 Politicos. Mobile Beat - Silicon Valley This conference proves the marketing, technology, and media do mix. Technology is needed to create compelling marketing campaigns. And, technology drives the media. Technology, marketing, and media can work hand-in-hand. Many media and marketing summits are scheduled this summer, like Mobile Beat in Silicon Valley. Mobile technology and marketing will be the main topic of discussion. The focal point will be the value of bots for media, developing technology within mobile apps to produce a better overall customer experience and how to increase brand interactions with consumers. So, keep any eye out these could be well worth a look if you work or are intending on moving into this area.

  • 6 Ways Technology is Changing Euro 2016

Football is a game that is steeped in tradition and has been largely unchanged since the rules were created back in the 1860s. But as technology comes into everything that we do and makes itself indispensable, even football has begun to embrace changing ways and adapting to technology. Here we look at some of the ways technology is changing the next big tournament, Euro 2016. Goal line technology Both the Premier League and the Bundesliga in Germany started using goal line technology in recent times and the development made its debut in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. There was a lot of debate about which system should be used with Hawk-Eye being the system used in both cricket and rugby being the winner. The system was used in the Champions League final a few weeks ago and UEFA confirmed it would be the system of choice for Euro 2016. Anti-drone technology On the slightly less positive side is the use of anti-drone technology with 'no fly zones' being established over stadiums and training grounds around France. The move follows several high profile drone incidents, most notably the one in the Albania vs Serbia qualifier in October 2014. Details of exactly what the technology is hasn't been disclosed for obvious reasons but the security chief of the tournament Ziad Khoury confirmed that it will include the ability to take control of a drone if it enters the no fly zone. Experience Improvement Tech If you have ever attended a big tournament in any sport, you will know it can be hard work. You queue to get in, you queue to get refreshments and everything seems to take an age. Of course, you always miss something vital when you dash for refreshments in the middle of the game so there is an inevitable crush at half-time. A range of new tech is being introduced to Euro 2016 to help speed up and simplify these processes including prepaid wristbands that work with contactless payment technology. This allows fans to order food and drink with a prepaid wristband then quickly collect their order. Smart Football Shirts Football is about to go high tech and a number of teams will be wearing gear that comes with built in sensors to monitor how players will perform. The shirts will have devices to monitor the player's body, taking into account VO2 levels, heart rate and a whole lot more and sending it via Bluetooth to the manager's tablet. Other tech includes accelerometers to track movement and G force. We've come a long way in terms of football kits in the last 20 or 30 years. Manager Tech Wearables are everywhere with smartwatches and VR headsets so it isn't a surprise that football managers can now make use of a range of wearable tech that can give them full information about their players and help formulate strategies. These include the OptimumEye S5 device from Catapult Sport that was used by Leicester City in the Premier League this season and is part of the reason the club suffered the fewest injuries of any of the top-tier sides. Watching in Virtual Reality Euro 2016 will herald the first time a big tournament is filmed with 360 degree cameras that allow the footage to be converted and watched on Virtual Reality headsets. Nokia's OZO system was tried out at the Champion's League final and is going to be used for many of the games. The experience is described as 'fully immersive' and means you will eventually be able to sit at home, using a special set of lens and microphones and feel like you are pitch-side.

  • How Older People will change Technology

The growth of social mobility aided by technology. So this would look at how modern technology allows older people to be more socially mobile, connecting with each other and with family, friends, etc. through technologies such as Skype. It could also discuss how older people can in fact, learn new skills related to computing and technology (there's a course on their page about this) and how as the current and future generations age, they will be quite tech-savvy and could be a valuable resource to areas such as web development and coding, where physical attributes are less of an issue. The baby boomer generation is one of the fastest growing consumers of technology, yet is often treated in a patronising tone by those that market said tech. In 2010, about a quarter of USA citizens were part of this 51-69 age bracket, yet accounted for around 40% of the tech spend in the nation. This meant they were top of the pile when it came to generational spends on tech. It's also worth pointing out they have the most discretionary income of all generations. Financial concerns aside, it's very understandable why baby boomers and older generations really have taken a bigger push toward tech than other generations. The state of modern technology allows for significant social mobility aided by technology. The easy to use operating systems on our mobile phones and tablets, alongside the array of amazing apps for communication, such as Skype, Whatsapp, Facebook and others, mean older people really want to and can utilise this tech easily and with notable benefit. These technologies make it easy to connect with family, friends, relatives and others living near or very far away at a cost sensitive price and often even for 'free'. The reality is the older generations are not as far removed from computers and IT as we think. Those now in their late 60s and of pensionable age would have only been in their late 20s or early 30s when PCs and computers began appearing in offices. In a lot of cases, this has meant that older people have at the very least, basic IT skills and don't find using smart phones or laptops the burden those of older generations did. They may not be digital natives, but they're not that far off either. In fact, many people of this age are looking to delve deeper into the world of IT and computing and learning new skills. There has been a notable rise in the numbers of older people learning to program and develop websites and apps. Needless to say owing to current trends in aging, this will only be useful for the future. In fact, it's expected that those over 65 will make up around 15.6% of the global populace by 2050. This may usher in a sea change in the way we see older people not only in their use of technology, but also in our workplaces. As computers and robots more specifically are expected to do more and more of our manual labour, humans will be utilised in positions where physical attributes are less of an issue – web development and coding for example. My expectation would be that future office generations will include older people in their 50s, 60s and 70s – many of whom will be coding and programming. These older generations will be a valuable resource in this world of the future and may be the ones showing the next generation how to program a robot or just like and share on the 2050 equivalent of Facebook.

  • IDT Vision's New X-Stream Camera Offers Continuous Frame Streaming in a Compact Design

Compact design and flexible interfacing, perfect for desktop applications High-speed cameras aren't known for being the most compact piece of equipment, especially when used for industrial applications. They're usually large, heavy, and not the most flexible when it comes to interfacing with multiple operating systems. IDT Vision is aiming to change all that with a new line of compact cameras dubbed the "XS Series." The most important quality of the XS Series, or Xstream, is probably the continuous frame streaming functionality via the PCI Express 2.0 x4 interface delivering 1,700 fps at full resolution (XS-720p) and 1,440 fps at full resolution (XS-1440p). There is a host of advanced features too, including frame-to-frame auto exposure, motion trigger, and a robust motion monitor application, which operate the cameras using Windows, Linux, or Mac OS environments seamlessly. So what does all this mean for the end user? I rented an XStream from IDT to see for myself. On IDT's US website it mentions the XS Series high speed cameras are well suited for industrial and packaging inspection, microscopy, medical, traffic control and surveillance. Since I don't have access to anything industrial or medical I decided to set up a photo shoot at a local firing range near IDT's office, just outside Los Angeles, to see whether I could capture a bullet leaving the muzzle of a rifle. Equipped with a few accessories from IDT and my new MacBook Pro, I was ready to dig in. Since my test was somewhat straightforward, I could get a feel for positive aspects of the camera fairly quickly. First impressions: The quality of the lens was incredible in every way. Having never used a camera of this high quality it was immediately obvious these cameras could handle a lot of rigorous work in less than optimal conditions. This thing is built so tough I wouldn't be surprised if it could survive a drop or two, although I wouldn't be the one to test that durability. Playing back the video footage on Mac OS was an absolute breeze so I can see why this one feature alone would be enough to warrant buying into this camera system. I could capture and play back the video and within minutes have professional-grade content anyone would be proud of. The only drawback that I found, if you could call it a drawback, would have to be price. Everything IDT carries is costly, which is why they tend to market mostly to industry professionals, larger production companies, and government agencies such as NASA. Yet the rental program puts high quality high-speed camera technology within reach for many other businesses and organizations.

  • 10 Pieces of Tech changing Home Security

Our homes are getting smarter and so too are our security devices. The internet of things has allowed for leaps and bounds in the security, camera and alarm industry and there are a number of exciting consumer devices on the market at the moment. So, let's take a closer look at some of the best. LG's Smart Security Solution This smart security solution manages to pack quite a lot of features into a small device. It has a camera, an environmental monitor and a siren - and features partnerships with companies such as August and SmartThings. It's quite an impressive security hub, and can also work together with the new non-contractual home monitoring by ADT. Ezviz's Outdoor Camera The Mini Cube, by Ezviz, is a small and quite affordable outdoor camera. It costs only $110 (roughly £75 or AU$155), which means it'll be hard to find competition in its price range. Devcon Home Security A wireless home security system such as that offered by Devcon is a trusted system that has been created to keep your home safe from intruders. A wireless home security system like this is an easy to set up, easy to use and very effective way to keep you and your family safe. Oco's Second Generation Oco's new system hopes to compete with the affordable options that Ezviz brings to the tablet. The new Oco features local storage (or cloud storage, for a fee), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatibility, two-way audio, and many other features you may expect - for a low price of $150 (about AU$210 or £100). SimpliSafe - Now With A Camera SimpliSafe had quite an impressive security system except for the fact it missed a camera - but that's no longer an issue. The SimpliSafe Security Camera fixes that. The camera, which seems like it'll be released this summer, is going to feature heat signature motion detection, HD resolution, two-way audio, and a lot more. It's the perfect addition for people with this issue who want to keep an eye on their property. iDevice's Creative Leak Sensor Idevice's Delta Leak Detector provides users with clever solutions to the problems previous sensors presented. Since it has Wi-Fi, you won't need any additional hub in order to receive mobile alerts - and it has probes designed to detect water quickly, before it starts to pool. Smart Garage Trying to locate an elusive garage door remote as you try to navigate a dark street, your kid's toys or toppled garbage cans can be awkward, or even dangerous. Chamberlain provides a garage door opener which allows you to tap the screen of your device in order to open or close it, wherever you are. The company will soon add geofencing capabilities too - allowing it to sense when you're near to automatically open, then close it when you're safely inside. Part of the Wink/Home Depot ecosystem and Apple's HomeKit initiative, MyQ is capable of controlling practically any garage door opener from a major brand, provided it was manufactured after 1993. Hub, Router, Alarm The Securifi Almond 3 combines a smart home hub with a security monitor and a Wi-Fi Router. This is an all-in one hub which will be able for $120 this summer (approximately AU$170 or £80). Depending on the device's performance, it may present itself a helpful solution to fragmented smart homes. Forget Batteries - It's Charged By Light The Brinks Array has two reasons why it's notable - it can be charged by any light, not just sunlight, so batteries aren't much of a concern; and it connects to your wi-fi, so there's no need for a hub in order to use it. Nest While The Nest Protect CO2 + Smoke Alarm is a great choice for individuals looking for a 2-in-1 device which connects to smart home devices, the Roost Smart Battery is quite useful, too. It's a $35 gadget which plugs into virtually any CO2 or smoke detector and turns it into a smart device - when the alarm goes of, it alerts you and your family on your smartphones, where you can silence it's something like a piece of burnt toast, or call 911 in case of a real emergency.

  • A Guide to Choosing a Gaming Monitor in 2016

Other than your powerful rig, the most important factor in gaming is how it all comes to you visually - the way you interpret elements on the screen and how fast you interact with them: The monitor. There is a large number of brands available, and they all offer a wide variety of different products, each of them claiming their monitor is the best for gaming and the one you should get. Naturally, it can't all be true - so read on to learn more about what you should look for in a gaming monitor in my opinion. The monitor frequency, and the monitor panel. 60hz vs 120hz and FPS In the past few years, since 120hz monitors appeared on the market, there has been plenty of discussion about their pros and cons when compared to traditional 60 hz monitors. In order to be able to properly compare them, lets look into how they function. A hertz measures the number of times the monitor's image is refreshed each second. A 120hz monitor, thus, refreshes twice as often as a 60hz one, displaying twice as many images per unit of time. This does make for a smoother image, and makes your eyes more at ease, since they need to process less information per each say. The problem of this theory is the FPS factor. The term stands for frames per second, and refers to how many frames your graphic card can process each second - and send to your monitor to display. Imagine, for instance, that you're playing at 30 frames per second using a 60hz monitor. This means that, each second, there will be 30 images to process. Considering your monitor displays 60 images each second, there will be 2 equal frames for each 1/30 of a second. This makes for a somewhat unpleasant viewing experience which is likely to influence your gaming negatively. There's always a relation between the frequency your monitor works at and your computer power - and you need to keep this in mind when you choose betwen the two types of monitor. If you play at over 60 fps with a 60 hz monitor, you won't see any difference when compared to playing at 60 fps, because the monitor cannot process more than that. If you use a 120hz monitor, however, you'll notice a difference until you reach 120 fps - after that, more frames per second won't make any changes. Particularly in a fast paced game, the difference between 60 and 120 fps using a 120hz monitor is very high. Personally, I've noticed that even when moving the mouse in your desktop environment you can notice the difference - and it's even easier to perceive in game. The difference will be more noticeable in games that feature fast movement - it'll be particularly large if you're a racing game player or a FPS player. In the end, the extra images will result in a smoother experience, which can get you ahead when gaming against players who use a 60hz monitor. When you're selecting the best gaming monitor, it's likely that you'll be faced with two options regarding the panel as well - TN and IPS Monitors. TN is the most common type of panel, which is found on the vast majority of the monitors in the market. TN panels are very cheap to make, and have the shortest response time, in milliseconds. In combination with today's popular LED back-lighting, panels consume low energy and offer god brightness - particularly LED ones. TN panels, however, have a significant con - terrible color shifting which depends on your viewing angle. It doesn't matter if you play right in front of the monitor - you're bound to notice color inconsistencies and shifting around the image, and this becomes even more noticeable on cheaper monitors. TN panels are "ok" regarding color accuracy - some brands are better than others, and some gamers don't care about it and are more interested in lower response times. Others, however, do, and finding balance between response time and image quality is something you should think about. IPS panels, on the other hand, are newer, cost more and consume more power - but they're a lot better than TN panels at colour reproduction. They offer excellent viewing angles as well - even at 90 degrees to the top or side you have excellent color consistency at the screen. A big drawback for gamers, however, is the response times, which can be significantly slower than TN panels. However, a recent technology named S-IPS (Super IPS) offers the excellent image of a IPS panel with the quick response time of a TN panel. This would be the perfect balance for a gaming monitor, to me, if it wasn't for a serious a drawback: There are no IPS or S-IPS monitors that operate on 120hz, since there's not much demand for this type of improvement in the field, so it's limited to 60hz. In the near future, the technology is expected to become available - and I'd recommend it to any serious gamer. You're not going to regret getting one, even if you end up having to spend twice as much as you'd pay for a standard 120hz TN monitor. We hope you have a better idea of gaming monitors and how to choose one. Why not try Plusvouchercode for even better value on monitors like these - please leave a comment below and we will reply.

  • 6 Titles that Shape the Way we Game

Gaming is almost half a century old and in that time we've seen plenty of games come and go and only some leave a mark. Here are six I'd consider to be pivotal in shaping the way we game Pac-Man (1980) Pac-man wasn't the first digital game around - but it was the first one to have a song dedicated to them, and have it hit #8 on Billboard's Top 100. The game reached an unprecedented popularity among arcades - not only people would line up around the buildings to play, it was a true, undeniable pop culture phenomenon. Pac-man was indeed a massive hit - probably a not bigger than you may realize. In its first year, the game made a billion dollars in quarters, which outpaced even Star Wars - it was the most popular media product at the time, and proved that games were truly capable of generating enormous profits. Why not try it here. Grand Theft Auto 3 (2001) Up until GTA III's release in 2001, to call a game "open-world" would be to say that you could go a bit further than usual from wherever the storyline and goals for the player were set. The game introduced players to an experience they had never seen before. Liberty City had an enormous variety of things to do, locations to explore, and innocent civilians to beat up for their cash money. You could either do it all or do none of it, if you preferred - fun would ensue either way. With a large number of missions and distractions which could keep players busy for hours, simply driving around in Liberty City's streets or creating mass panic (perhaps by using cheat codes which would arm each of the civilians with a rocket launcher) was enough to keep players glued to their PS2s for a long time. Many of its successors tried to imitate GTA's success, but it is still the granddad of open-world games. Pokemon Red and Blue (1996) The first game to achieve the sort of child-bating hysteria that big cartoons and toys did in the '80s and '90s, Pokemon had quite a simple concept: It combined cute cartoon creatures with an obsessive-compulsive, competitive collecting mechanic (which was very easy to later transfer into merchandise design), and you get playground gold. 16 years after that, with an entire multimedia empire behind the brand, Pokemon has proven to be even more enduring and popular than Furbies, Pogs and Tamagotchis combined. It has spawned an enormous quantity of imitators, but none of them were capable of coming close to Nintendo's achievement. Despite various commercial failings and missteps in other areas, Pokemon has Nintendo printing out money whenever they want to. Minecraft (2011) Minecraft has taken the world by storm since its release in 2011. A flurry of awards initially were backed up with huge commercial success. The game has received numerous awards of note for it being the best downloadable game and over 70m copies of it have been sold, around 20m of which are on Xbox consoles. The multiplayer game mode has been a large part of the success of Minecraft. Here players acquire resources to create a better world and improve their health. There's also a creative mode with unlimited resources and an adventure mode where custom maps are created by others. The fact the game can be modded has leant to huge communities rising up around the game, some even allowing people to play Minecraft for free. Doom (1993) In the nineties, they didn't call this sort of game a first-person shooter. They called them Doom clones. With a space marine, eight weapons and endless demonic monsters that had to be killed, Doom got the core idea of Wolfestein and ramped them as much as they could. More atmosphere, gore and fun, all merged into an incredibly intense experience which stimulated players in a way no other game was capable of. Spraying rockets, BFG plasma and shotgun shells at bizarre creatures in what at the time was a lifelike environment was a carnal, violent delight. To say simply that Doom made waves would be the sort of understatement that deserves a revved chainsaw to the chest. Its shareware could be found in every single school computer lab and office cubicle in the country - conservatives were very vocal about their opinions on the Satanic themes and the bountiful carnage that the game represented. More than anything, the game managed to solidify the FPS experience as a prevalent genre, one that still makes the industry millions and millions of dollars yearly. If not for ID Software's bold leap forward, the gaming landscape of today would possibly be unrecognizable. Pong For a game that did not involve anything other than two straight lines that represented paddles and a moving pixel that represented a ball, Pong had an enormous impact on the gaming industry at the time. Atari's wildly successful arcade game was what launched it. In the seventies, Nolan Bushnell, Atari's co-founder, hired a new employee. It was Allan Alcorn - a man who did not have much experience in making games. Nolan decided to task him with developing a very simple game inspired on table tennis - nothing more than a warm-up product. This "test" would become Pong, one among the most successful coin-op arcade games in the industry's history. In fact, Pong was so successful that many companies started to develop their own versions of Pong, which was actually inspired on a ping pong game that was part of the Magnavox Odyssey. Atari tried to circumvent it by developing a version of the game for home consoles, and Home Pong's success was even higher than that of its arcade counterpart, proving that companies could make serious cash through virtual entertainment.

  • Five Fun Tricks You Can Perform With Your Android Camera

5 Things you Never Knew you Could do With your Android Phone Camera Not long ago cameras were expensive, clunky and very technical – a lot has changed. Even the cheapest Android devices can be turned to create all sorts of amazing, cool and often odd sorts of photos. This said, a lot of people don't know where to start. So, here are five awesome things to do with your cheap Android camera phone. Scan and Then Digitize Your Old Negatives I want to begin by going on record and saying that this is not the best way to get this done. A lot of pros have favourite old school ways to do this and it's worth mentioning Plustek or Lomography Opticfilm scanner to properly capture your old negatives digitally. But if you are looking for the shortcut, the quickest way to view and capture your old negatives you can use the negative effect on your camera. You can also look into apps which specialize in this such as the HELMUT Film Scanner. While Moving You Are Still Able To Utilize Your Panorama Shot Many people have nicknamed this camera hack the "PanoDriveBy". Nowadays most smartphones include some kind of a stock "panorama" option which allows for large wide vistas to be captured by combining a variety of images taken as the user tilts or moves their camera, you can also find various third party apps which provide the same function. This are of course designed to be used by an individual who is standing still you can however get them to function while you are moving. All that this requires is that you hold the smartphone still while pointing it out the window. The images can however look a bit questionable ones stitched together you can however add your own special effects afterwards to spruce it up. Your Phone and Telescopes Go Hand In Hand This is a basic yet widely unknown little trick. By simply placing your phone's lens right on the telescope you can capture the image on the other side in a magnified way. While on my honeymoon in Argentina I tried this very thing. Although the bird I believe it was uncooperative and flew away before the shot was actually taken. This also works well with binoculars. Slow the World Down and Speed it Up Again Even though they are no competition for high speed cameras such as IDT High Speed Cameras, smart phone cameras have come a long way in recent years. There are a number of cool apps out there that make it easier to capture high speed images once you are shooting in well light conditions. High-Speed Cameras take numerous photos at a rate of up to 30 a second, allowing you to capture every moment from before the action starts to well after it's over. With 30 frames per second you can't miss the action. And though not perfect, it can still produce excellent results. Cause TV Personalities Heads to Burst If you have a favourite personality you find to be intelligent you can spread the message through social media by using a trick of perspective to visually expand their brain. Hold the camera close to the screen while pointing it downward. This will show everyone exactly how special their brain really is. No Photoshop is needed simply #BoomBigHead. Inexpensive Phone Sensors Are Awesome I am sure, as we all have, have at some point tried taking a shot with your phone's camera of an object in movement, you probably realized it did not look right. The thing is that the majority of consumer's smartphones cameras use CMOS sensors, images are captured in a line-by-line sequence, instead of the pricier CCD image sensor which can all at once capture the action happening on the other side of the camera lens, also known as a "global shutter". When you are taking a picture of a still person or object there is not much of an obvious difference. If however an object suddenly moves then the picture may seem warped, this is because the object or objects may have moved right when the next line was rendered, this warping effect is also known as "jellocam". Various manufacturers have had varying levels of success while attempting to reduce these effects with the use of software workarounds. That being said many of today's most modern phones can still have a problem or two with warping if a picture of a rapidly moving object is such as a car in motion, a propeller on a plane etc. is trying to be captured. Although this is not a perfect portrayal of reality it still looks pretty cool. So, our advice is to take the above on board and get out and capture some great, weird photos making the most of the cheap tech available.

  • Poetry 2.0 - 11 Poets Setting Instagram on Fire

Over the last four years, Instagram has arisen to become the most famous social media app in the entire world. We utilize it to happily promote our endeavors and share our lives through pictures. And of course, since the transition from printed pictures with a white border to square ones became a trend, we can see how we're influenced by those that we follow. While handwriting and typewriting stanzas and more stanzas of poetry can get tedious, it does pay off. Some of the poets I'll mention have received their popularity entirely through their Instagram fan base. This recognition, has allowed them to work in big-time magazines or newspapers, or publish actual books. This shows that words can leave serious imprints on people - if we set aside some time to read instead of merely scrolling, we can find ourselves relating to all sorts of amazing stuff. Emo Labs (@Emolabs) At the top of this list, naturally, is Tony Ciampa - the man behind the Emolabs account. A 22-year old who studies at the Northeastern University of Boston, Tony has over fifty thousand followers. His stops features small sketches, each with a handwritten poem. Followers go gaga over his work, not only due to the fact that his poems are full of feeling, but also for his thoughtful, sensitive photography. After his first interactive book's success (#fourpartpoems), he has a second one coming out soon. Nameless Poet (@Anotherenglishpoet) Anotherenglishpoet is one of the brightest up and coming Instagram poets and is really getting a head of steam. This Englishman speaks about love, pastoral scenes and memories and has a real penchant for Instagram poetry – certainly one to follow. Lang Leav (@Langleav) An amazing writer who has a knack for capturing a bittersweet melancholy associated with falling in love, Lang Leav deserves a place at the top of the list. Her work is reminiscent of prose and usually quite short, but features emotion-packed imagery which hits hard. Leav is an internationally exhibited artist and a published poet. She has a few books published, such as "Memories", "Lullabies" and "Love & Misadventure". Follow her to see great pieces of poetry which will make you want to be in love - or maybe not. Christopher Poindexter (@ChristopherPoindexter) Another poet who was managed to make Instagram users swoon for the entire last year. He's quite an enigmatic figure - after he surfaced, users filled Quora with questions about who he was - and noone was able to answer. With classic-vintage posts, Christopher writes free verses as well as poems which move readers past the point while they feelings can't turn back. He's the perfect example of a contemporary poet who drinks whiskey sitting by a trailer and writing overwhelming poems on his old typewriter - now we can guess where he gets his charm. High Poets Society (@highpoetssociety) Well worth following if you've a love of poetry and want to get some quick Instagram fixes. High Poet Society is becoming increasingly popular on the social media network, providing thought provoking and insightful poetry for the masses. Liv Lately (@Livlately) Liv is amazing. He has a few published works at the moment, such as "Chasers of the Light", a bestseller of his. He's known for his series named "Daily Haiku", as well as his "Typewriter Series", where he posts at least one piece every day. Charles Bukowski (@bukowskipoems) An original master, Bukowski has the raw wisdom you can only find at the bottom of a bottle. He's purveys dark, beautiful honest, regardless of the matter or the cost. An inspiration to many and a undeniably a genius, Bukowski is worth the read, always. Robert Drake (@rmdrk) Robert Drake has over 1.5m followers for a good reason - he produces consistently great work, producing insightful and thoughtful pieces about the world around us and life in general - he makes me think. Silvi Alcivar (@thepoetrystore) Silvi is different from others on this list due to the fact she's not a writer, but one hundred percent a poet. She oozes elegance, and works as a freelance mercenary - in weddings, birthdays, parties and really, most everything else. She takes up a typewriter, sets up a scene, and writes her poetry - then and there, on the sot. She's very talented and insightful - someone I wish I could buy a drink someday. Ashley Brooke Thomas (@ashleybrookethomas) I discovered her recently, this very week, but I really like her work. She's soft, but rough around the edges. Sometimes introverted, but always insightful. I'm very curious to see where she'll take herself next.

  • 5 Ways Technology is Altering Dental Care for the Better

Tooth care used to be as complex as tying a string to a door knob and shutting the door. However, we've seen great advances in the last century and as with most things in medical science, the pace of change is speeding up still. Here are 5 ways tech is changing tooth care for the better. Paint That Can Help To Prevent Decay A paste has been developed by researchers from the University of Leeds that gets painted onto the teeth to help protect them against decay. Peptides - which are naturally occurring molecules - are contained in the paste. They seep into very small holes that are on the surface of the tooth. A gel is formed by the peptides that offers a 'scaffold' for attracting calcium from the saliva. You can see more about these at research peptides. A protective layer is provided by the calcium. Originally the paste was developed to treat early decay. Professor Jennifer Kirkam, from University of Leeds school of dentistry, says that they already knew that the formula was capable of providing some degree of repair for tooth decay, but that in the fluid or paste they could also see that it was able to protect again acid attack as well. Seaweed Toothpaste Newcastle University researchers have discovered that there is an organism that is found in seaweed that has the ability to cut through plaque, which is the bacteria which forms on teeth. The way that traditional toothpastes work is that they rub off the plaque. However, even when brushing carefully not all of the plaque is removed. A 'biofilm' is formed by the remaining plaque, which is a collection of bacteria that are mostly harmful and stick to one's teeth. It is thought by researchers that an enzyme coming from the organism Bacillus licheniformis may strip harmful bacteria out of the plague. It can be used in a mouthwash or paste. According to Professor Nairn Wilson from King's College in London, traditionally toothpaste and mouthwash have been used as a disinfectant and cleaner for getting rid of bugs. However much of the recent research has focused on the biofilm to see how it could be approached for creating a defensive field and excluding bad bugs. However, more studies are necessary to show that this technique is safe and works. Available: Within the next 5 years Torch For Rebuilding Teeth Researchers from University of Birmingham's School of Dentistry have discovered that shining a light with certain wavelengths onto tooth cavities might help to promote repair naturally. This process is called photobiomodulation and it activates growth factors inside the teeth so that stem cells will form dentine. Available: Within the next 5 years A vibrating gumshield has been developed by Israeli scientists. It is worn at night and is able to act much more quickly than conventional braces can. This Aeroentis deveice comes with a vibrating silicone balloon which rests against one's teeth. It moves the teeth gently so that they line up with a gumshield which is moulded into the proper shape. This balloon vibrates several time per second. It is strong enough for stimulating the teeth so that they move but still gentle enough so that the atient is not woken up. According to the maker, teeth are able to be realigned in only three months. With conventional braces it takes 12 to 18 months. Professor Damian Walmsle, who is a British Dental Association scientific adviser, the idea is an exciting one. However, it is still too early to tell whether it is a concept that works or not. King's College researchers have developed technology that is similar. It is called the Acceledent. It is worn around an existing brace for a period of 20 minutes per day. The teeth's movement is gently accelerated by tiny pulse. Available: Orthodontists like time4smile.co.uk have Aerodentis available. Go to acceledent.co.uk to locate an orthodontist who can fit Acceledent. Boost Your Jawbone Sometimes patients won't have a sufficient amount of bone for anchoring a dental implant. Although bone can be used from other parts of the body, surgery is required. Scientists now have been able to devise ways of growing bone that uses synthetic bone chips made out of materials like calcium carbonate. Wayne Halfpenny, who is a maxillofacial surgeon and oral consultant at Cavell Hospital in London and BMI The King's Oak, explains that the chips are then mixed with plasma - which is the liquid portion of blood that helps with bone cell growth. He adds that the mixture gets packed into the area that is damage to form a scaffolding so that bone cells can growth to form new bone. This however can take as long as six months prior to the bone being thick enough for anchoring an implant.

  • Goodyear Showcases Spherical Tyres for Self Driving Autos

Tire technology has significantly changed over the years, although the general shape and size of tires for passenger vehicles has not been altered for decades. All that is getting ready to change with Goodyear's introduction of the Eagle-360 at the Geneva Motor Show this year. You can see the concept here. Designed for vehicles expected to be autonomous in the future, this spherical tire will use magnetic fields to suspend the tire from a car. This is similar to the use of magnetic poles used by maglev trains to levitate as they move down the tracks. Goodyear claims that noise from the road will greatly decrease while the level of passenger comfort will dramatically increase. This makes sense because of the physical link between axle and tire which transfers the interaction of the tire with the road to the occupants of the vehicle. Gain A Greater Grip: Improvements In The Technology Of Tires While the passenger benefits are obvious, the ball design allows movement in every direction, which significantly increases the ability to maneuver the car in every conceivable direction. And, the need to parallel park is eliminated when tires are spherical. All you have to do is pull next to a parking spot and make a horizontal move to fit right in. However, Goodyear has included technology that makes these tires more than just magnetic balls. They are designed to move as needed. According to the manufacturer, the tires will be capable of halting motion to reduce slippage when black ice or other hazards are detected. Road condition information will be collected by sensors located inside of the tire. That information can be shared with other cars on the road. Taking this concept even further, these tires will be capable of communicating with authorities to help the create emergency slow zones, improve response times, and prepare them for risks on the road. It would be interesting to see the changes to the work of tyre fitters and others if such technology arrived. There are some issues within the design that still need to be ironed out. For example, both the front and rear axles would have to be considerably shortened in order to get the tire to fit under the fender of the car. Plus, these tires won't be cheap and will change some workers' role. Shoppers are already paying a lot for high-quality rubber. It would certainly cost a lot to cover a ball that requires more rubber than a tire and that's loaded with sensors. The idea is a fantastic one, although there are major obstacles to overcome. Hopefully, the concept will be pursued by Goodyear and we will see them on the road in the future.

  • How the Internet of Things is changing Home Security

One of the biggest buzzwords of 2015 is the "Internet Of Things". It is astonishing when you think about how our many home devices work hand-in-hand with the Internet, even now. The changes that this new technology is already bringing about are already apparent and is changing the way we think about home security. A look at Nest and other smart tools for the home that are already in existence provide a sample of the direction that the things that are part of the "Internet of Things" are heading. What should home owners expect to change in the future? The top reason that homes are targeted by burglars is that they are easy to access, because they are believed to be unprotected. Because of the technological changes coming in the future, I believe this will alter the landscape of home security systems. The number of break-ins will drop massively as improvements in technology continue. This is something that is happening all over the world, not just in our own backyard. What can we expect the future to bring to us? Inexpensive Cameras For Home Security This big change is already in the works. In the past, getting a good security system was costly, to say the least. Plus, those expensive monthly payments are already rapidly fading into the background. The price of IP Camera Hosting is quickly dropping and the appearance of new opportunities has already begun. Camera data is now being stored on the cloud, eliminating the need for storage on a server and making it readily accessible no matter where you are. In the future, this will substantially reduce the cost of home security while simplifying it in the process. Scanning Devices For Fingerprints Just a decade ago, this technology could only have been used by the wealthy. Now, the technology can be found on laptops, tablets, smart phones, and even in some homes. There is still a ways to go with this technology. However, it will soon be available in the next few years to gain access to homes, which will make picking a lock practically impossible. Surveillance That Costs Less Criminal catching technology is constantly improving and getting less expensive in the process. The days when security guards were constantly required to be on location are going away. In fact, third parties are now providing services to many companies that monitor activity to determine if it is suspicious and to make the decision to act. This type of service reduces the number of false alarms and cuts down on costs. As the service technology improves, these third parties will soon be able to take on additional customers at a lower cost. The net result is that ordinary home owners will soon be able to access these services, which will no longer be exclusive to large companies. It can also help cut insurance costs for homes. Systems For Optimal Control Of The Home The Internet of Things has brought the ability for home owners to control their homes when they are away from them, which is a major change. You can turn on your television, turn off the lights, lock the doors, and even change the temperature settings when you are not there. In addition, you will know if anything from items of furniture to electronics have been taken from your home with this technology, which is a major security benefit. For example, if your television is removed after a burglar enters your home, you can receive a text message letting you know that your television has been unplugged. Even if your front door is opened while you are away on a trip, you can receive one of these programmed messages. Now, since your home alarm is controlled by you, you can sound the alarm if necessary after checking your IP hosted camera to find out what is going on. With these endless possibilities in combination with the low cost associated with this ability to protect your home and your family, most people will be able to set up home security systems with this kind of power in the coming days.
