Engadget Review

For better or worse, the iPhone XS Max is just a massive iPhone XS. That's great in some ways: its 6.5-inch display is fantastic for watching videos and lining up photos, and there's a much better battery here, too. That said, only a few app and services so far make meaningful use of all this extra screen space. Beyond that, it’s simply going to be too much phone for some people to use comfortably with one hand. (You really need to try it before buying, if possible.) Even so, this is still Apple’s best big smartphone, and it’s more than enough to give Android’s best a run for their money.

I would not rush out to spend another $999 on the XS if you have a X, but if you’re already deep into a preorder, don’t worry: you will love the iPhone XS. It is, indeed, more iPhone, and it will probably hold up for years to come. I definitely prefer the Pixel 2’s camera, but the iPhone XS isn’t that far behind, and it’s still a significant improvement over previous iPhones.

Don't be fooled by the "S" label — the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are the best and most powerful iPhones Apple's ever made.

I still think you shouldn’t feel like you have to upgrade if you invested in last year’s phones—or even if you have a slightly older phone, like an iPhone 7. Is there a palpable difference between these models and your one- or two-year old phone? Yes, absolutely. But that doesn’t mean your older phone is bad. That’s the thing about high-end smartphones, these mini-computers in our pockets: even last year’s models are still pretty darn amazing.

Apple finally delivers an iPhone with a huge screen, and for movie-watching, game-playing fans the iPhone XS Max is an exciting new addition to the range. It certainly costs a lot, but if you can get past the price (which many won't be able to) the XS Max offers up a super, supersized experience.

It’s expensive and won’t be for everyone, but the iPhone XS Max is a great phone in just about every area.

Before writing off the size of the iPhone XS Max, I recommend visiting a store where you can spend a few minutes and get a better idea of what the XS Max is all about. If you recently upgraded to an iPhone X, or maybe even an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, don't feel left out if aren't ready to upgrade. It's an expensive decision! The future of the iPhone is big and bright, and the iPhone XS Max is the embodiment of that future.

The only thing that totally makes it worth it for me is the additional battery life. That's the only feature that isn't just a matter of being a little bit better than the iPhone X. This is significant. Other than that, the iPhone Xs Max is a really great phone, just like its predecessors. Sadly, there's nothing unique that sets it apart from last year's model, but it does well overall. If you buy one, I don't think you'll regret it, as long as you considered the price point and discussed it with your spouse before purchasing it. As I said in the title, it's bigger, better, and faster, and that's about it.

The iPhone XS Max is simply the best smartphone for movies and music that you can currently buy.

You know as well as I do that buying a smartphone isn’t just about the cost and the benchmarks ... For many, the iPhone is the only smartphone around and therefore, for them, this is simply the best smartphone. They won’t be disappointed, but their bank manager will be.

The supersize iPhone XS Max crams a 6.5-inch screen and all of the same great features of the iPhone XS into a Plus-sized body -- but it's not as huge a leap up as you might think.
