Engadget Review

Apple's new 13-inch MacBook with a Retina display effectively crosses the divide between Air and Pro, but at a premium cost.

The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) is the best way to carry the pixels of a large-screen monitor with you on the road. It's ideal for people who make their living with visuals.

While the Retina MacBook Pro is easily the most desirable 13-inch Mac laptop to date, the high price and lack of discrete graphics make it a tough call versus either the more powerful 15-inch Retina Pro or the more affordable 13-inch Air.

Mobile Tech Review
Certainly a gorgeous machine, ultraportable. Great for those of you who have a MacBook Air 13-inch but always wanted something a little bit smarter and you don't mind a half a pound to go with it.

Laptop Magazine
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is a lot like the iPhone 5. Apple took a winning formula and perfected it by making it thinner, lighter and faster. But in this case the display isn't bigger. It's a quantum leap better than the regular MacBook Pro and other ultraportable laptops.

People love the combination of performance and portability that the 13-inch MacBook Pro provides. The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is poised to continue the legacy of Apple's mighty little laptop.

Those on a budget may find the premium hard to swallow, but those with the cash to match the asking price here won't be disappointed after they get a taste of Retina.

SlashGear
While the Air might be the smallest of Apple’s notebook line-up, the 13-inch Pro hits a more palatable sweet-spot for balancing power, performance, and functionality. At $1,699 and up, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display sits at the premium end of the notebook market.

Ars Technica
In the end, the 13" Retina MacBook Pro is a solid laptop. Despite this, it's not the greatest value. If you want a 13" laptop with a Retina display, you have to accept quite a few compromises.

Professionals who demand the best will warm to the new MacBook instantly but cautious consumers not purchasing the MacBook on a business account should be more wary of the performance vs price ratio compared to the 2011 model.

The point is, the rMBP 13 is wonderful, but it's not that much more wonderful than everything else. ...there are better, or just more sensible options either out now, or just off the horizon. So unless you've got an extra grand to blow on a screen upgrade for a MacBook Air, it's probably prudent to hold off on this for now.
