A forgettable product. It isn't bad, exactly, but also doesn't do anything particularly well.

As for performance, Android lags slightly on that dual-core CPU, but we wouldn't say it's any worse than what you'll experience on other budget tablets.

This slate is just 10.7 mm thin, rather light at 13.05 ounces, and looks quite nice with some smoothness on its back. The software on this device is not quite final at the moment, so you’ll not want to base judgements on what you see in the hands-on video.

Now that we’ve had our hands on it, it basically reminds us 100% of the Nexus 7. Both in the overall design, feel, thickness, weight and all. Obviously this is made of stainless-steel instead of plastics, but has a soft coat red or black option on back to make it comfortable to hold.

The HP Slate 7 does just enough to differentiate itself from the competition because of the cameras and Beats Audio support. But it isn't a hugely impressive tablet.

Though HP wouldn’t disclose the make and model of the 1.6-GHz dual-core Coretex A9 CPU inside the HP Slate 7, the processor is definitely fast enough to play games.

However, that the screen has been whacked with the ugly stick a few times makes it worth spending a few extra pounds on a better spec’d rival if you can afford it.

The HP Slate 7 strips out way too much to make its low price, and what's left can't compare to the Nexus 7's offerings.

Android Central
The reality is that the HP Slate 7 is disappointing in practically every manner. The build quality is good, but the design feels old and does nothing to minimize its bulk.

It's essentially like using a variant of the Nexus 7 that is made differently, but not perceptibly worse. And cheaper.

Summing up, the Slate 7 is on paper a good move by HP, showing that the firm is willing to move on from its Windows roots and truly enter the mobile race. Sadly its opening foray into Android is a slightly clumsy one, with the firm choosing to cut too many corners to keep the Slate 7's price down.
