  • Bond games removed from Steam and Activision online stores

Faster than you can repeat a surname, the James Bond games have disappeared from Steam and Activision's own download store. In addition, the download versions of the games 007 Legends, Blood Stone and Quantum of Solace don't show up on Amazon, though of course the disc versions are still available there. The likely explanation would seem to be expiring rights to the 007 license, but the timing doesn't make sense on that, considering that 007 Legends was just released in October (and November on PC). We're investigating the matter, though not in the sexy, brutal James Bond method: we've just asked Activision about it.

Eurocom, which most recently worked on 007 Legends, experienced massive layoffs today. GamesIndustry received a statement from the developer that it let go of a majority of over 200 employees today."We've fought to try and save as many jobs as possible, but the steep decline in demand for console games, culminating in a number of console projects falling through in the last week, left us with no option," the statement to GI.biz reads. "Eurocom has retained a core staff of just under 50 employees and will be focusing mainly on mobile opportunities moving forward."007 Legends was not well received by critics, with a current Metacritic of 45. Prior to that, Eurocom made the Goldeneye 007 remake and Dead Space: Extraction, which will always hold a special place in Joystiq's heart for giving us Dead Space Girl.

Remember those scenes in License to Kill where James Bond hacked an office PC using mini-games on his Sony smartphone, massacred 100 henchmen with his custom-configured assault shotgun, bounced his car off some invisible walls, then had a Punch-Out!!-style QTE fist fight with villain Franz Sanchez? Neither do I – but that's how 007 Legends remembers things.Admittedly, such inaccurate adaptations are not entirely to blame for 007 Legends' failings; certain concessions need to be made to create an engaging video game. But the degree to which developer Eurocom and publisher Activision fail to successfully capitalize on any of the crazy action sequences or exotic settings of the five films featured in Legends is astounding. Bond's most memorable moments have been mutated almost beyond recognition to fit the mold of a safe first-person shooter, and the result is a bland, boring mess.%Gallery-162442%

Eurocom's nostalgia-stuffed shooter, 007 Legends, receives its free Skyfall downloadable content on November 9, at least on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. The DLC is coming to other platforms further down the line. The game infiltrates PC on November 2, and sneaks over to the Wii U sometime in December.

Eurocom's re-imagining of select James Bond films, 007 Legends, has some exclusive content on the PS3. MI6 field agent Eve and assassin Patrice from next month's Skyfall film are both playable in multiplayer and have "their own special features and abilities," though the PlayStation Blog post doesn't mention what those features and abilities are, exactly. We contacted Activision for further information on what sets these two characters apart in the 007 Legends multiplayer mode. We'll be sure to update as soon as MI6 command gets back to us.

One of the most famous scenes in Bond's imperiled history, in which he's nearly carved in half by a laser, is the focal point of the Goldfinger-inspired level in 007 Legends, the upcoming first-person shooter that mashes up the secret agent's cinematic conquests. The other five films featured in 007 Legends are Moonraker, Licence to Kill, Die Another Day, the upcoming Skyfall and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. 007 Legends will be launched on October 16 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and sometime later on the Wii U. %Gallery-165746%

007 Legends is coming to the Wii U, Activision announced at Nintendo of America's conference today.007 Legends is part of the Wii U launch window lineup, meaning it is expected to hit anywhere from November 18 - March 2013 . It is due out on other platforms on October 16.007 Legends combines six classic James Bond storylines into one game, including Moonraker, On Her Majesty's Service, Die Another Day, Licence to Kill and one not-yet-classic plot, Skyfall, the Daniel Craig film due out in November. Players will inhabit Craig's version of James Bond, and the game is written by Bruce Feirstein, the pen behind the films Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough.

Two more of the "legends" in 007 Legends have been announced. Toby Stephens will reprise the role of Gustav Graves in a mission based on 2002's Die Another Day, and Carey Lowell comes back as Agent Pam Bouvier in a mission from Licence to Kill.Of course, given the nature of this game, both of them will be interacting with Daniel Craig-style Bond instead of Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton, respectively. That means that they'll be preoccupied with Bond's new appearance, and will distractedly pester him with questions instead of going about their business. Look forward to it!%Gallery-162442%

Activision has attached a few more names to the upcoming 007 Legends, which follows a virtual Daniel Craig through several old James Bond movies. The game is written by Bruce Feirstein, who wrote the film versions of Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough, and worked with Activision on Bond remakes and adaptations in the past, including 007 Everything or Nothing and 2010's Bloodstone.Richard Kiel joins the cast to reprise his role of Jaws from Moonraker, while Michael Londsdale appears as Hugo Drax, the villain whose aim is to destroy humanity. It was previously announced that Skyfall's Naomie Harris and Rory Kinnear will both appear in the game as well, as Bond's love interest and the MI6 Chief of Staff, respectively. We'll probably hear about even more cast and crew announcements for 007 Legends on the way to its release on October 16.

Activision has confirmed "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" as another playable chunk of Bond history in the upcoming 007 Legends, which will consist of five different missions inspired by various James Bond movies (but with Daniel Craig voicing Bond throughout, apparently). "Moonraker" was the first title announced. The addition of "OHMSS" means players will get to jump into a film widely considered one of the best in the series.007 Legends will also have a sixth mission based on "Skyfall," the new Bond movie due out next summer. The game will be out on October 16 of this year, and odds are that we'll get to see it in more detail in two weeks at Comic-Con.

We apologize that this trailer for 007 Legends is buried after an action-packed, tension-ridden, sexually charged video advertising the coming James Bond film, Skyfall. We're sure anyone interested in a James Bond video game is completely outraged by the violent hedonism of James Bond movies. Again, our sincerest apologies.007 Legends is due out October 16, its trailer eventually reveals, following in-game scenes from Moonraker, one of the six James Bond storylines mashed up for the title. The 007 Legends trailer begins at 1:24, and in all honesty we could have very easily cut out just the video game portion and spared you the trouble of having to watch the Skyfall trailer. If anyone has a problem with our editorial decision, feel free to take it up with our staff – all 0011 of us.

  • 007 Legends: six Bond films shaken, not stirred, into a single game

Activision's new 007 Legends for Xbox and PS3 features a storyline that ties together six classic James Bond films, ending with the new Skyfall (no idea if that one's a classic yet!). Activision has yet to announce which films from the character's 50-year-long movie history will be represented, but we guarantee they'll include tuxedos, girls, and gunfights. We also guarantee it'll be weird that the same guy, at roughly the same age, is taking on missions in the '60s and now.Developed by Eurocom, the new game seems to serve as a sequel to the Wii's Goldeneye 007 and its updated port Goldeneye 007 Reloaded. A single-player mode brings back that game's MI-6 Ops Missions, this time playable from a villain's perspective as well. Multiplayer is also included, in both local split-screen and online competitive modes.007 Legends is due this fall. We just realized, why not tie together seven Bond films for the story? Then the title could have been a nice self-referential pun.
