This is going to be huge. Unfortunately, we're talking size not marketplace impact when Dell's 17-inch Precision "mobile workstation" rolls out this fall. This portable desktop replacement promises up to 1TB of storage configured in a dual-drive RAID configuration, quad-core processor, and 16GB of graphics memory (1GB for graphics) with enough oomph to power a pair of external 30-inch displays. It also includes a number of unidentified media slots and an integrated jog shuttle controller -- a pretty good hint at the mobile media types this laptop is targeting. Watch it all go down in the video after the break.Update: Heh, this is the same Dell leaked last month carrying the M6400 moniker.[Thanks, Gaurav S.]

  • Gateway's 17-inch P-6831FX gaming laptop gets reviewed

Given that Gateway just pushed out a round of updates including the relatively ginormous P Series, we reckon it was only logical to expect a review shortly. To be frank, the P-6831FX critiqued over at HotHardware is far from being the most potent machine with a 17-inch panel, but unlike many of its luxurious competitors, this one is actually affordable. So, how much gaming joy can $1,349.99 bring you? Quite a bit when the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS and 3GB of RAM are included. Reviewers found gaming performance to be downright remarkable, though the 1.67GHz CPU did hamper it a bit in other areas. It should be noted that the unit now arrives with a slightly faster CPU among other minor extras, so if it was good then, we're guessing it's a runaway winner now.

This certainly won't be the first time ASUS has shipped an in-demand item elsewhere in the world while USers ponder the thought of importing, but apparently the outfit's potent G70 is now on sale in the UK. For those who missed it, this monstrosity features a 17-inch WUXGA / WXGA+ panel, an optional Core 2 Extreme processor, twin GeForce 8700M GT graphics cards, 1GB of RAM, an optional Blu-ray writer, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth / WiFi and oodles of LED accents. Word on the street has it going for around £1,999 ($3,948) well equipped, but those blokes across the pond aren't too worried about a US release date.

If your neighbor ordered one of these monstrosities, you probably felt the ground shake when the freight carrier dropped this bad boy off at his / her doorstep. If you were stuck in the cubicle during that whole ordeal, however, here's a gentler news flash: Alienware's brawny m17x gaming laptop is shipping right now. Initial reports from early adopters include phrases like "So huge!" and "Brobdingnagian!," which is pretty much right in line with what we were expecting to hear.

Don't know about ya'll, but our eyes tend to glaze over with apathy as soon as we see "desktop replacement" in a laptop press release. Nevertheless, here's LG's take on the semi-portable: the 17-inch X-R700 and 19-inch X-S900. They're big -- much bigger than the average mini-skirt found on Korean product waifs. The ???1,699,000 (about $1,744) Model X-R700 XP50K sports a WXGA display with integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, 3GB of memory, 512MB of nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics and a 1.83GHz T5550 Core 2 Duo pumping away under the hood. The ???1,390,000 (about $1,436) X-S900 KP55K model packs the same 1,366 x 768 resolution and processor but slaps in 256MB of ATI Mobility Radeon HD2400 graphics, 2GB of memory, and bumps the disk from 250GB to 320GB spinning at 7,200rpm (thanks Fujitsu). While the laptops are a bit meh, at least you'll notice how much bigger the images are on the new and improved Engadget layout.%Gallery-20229%

  • Toshiba fleshes out new Satellite P300 series

We spotted this P300 refresh last week, but Toshiba was kind enough today to bring some actual SKUs out in the open. The 17-inch laptops pack a decent punch for the price, but the 1440 x 900 screens aren't exactly going to win any points. For $1,050 you can get an Intel Core 2 Duo T5550-powered machine, with 3GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD, DVD burner, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256MB graphics, a built-in webcam and so forth. Lop off a hundie and you can nab an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-62 processor, 2GB of RAM, 250GB of HDD and a Radeon X1250 graphics.

    01.07.2008

The new P-170 FX laptop lineup from Gateway might look a bit bulky, but there's quite a bit of tech under the hood. At the "low-end," the P-170 FX1 runs a Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, 17-inch 1440 x 900 screen, 3GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, multi-format DVD burner, 5-in-1 media reader, GeForce 8800M GTS graphics with 512MB of RAM, 802.11n WiFi and a 9 cell battery. For $1,600 it's not a bad package, but if you've got a few grand in pocket, you might want to look into the $3,000 P-170FX MAX, which bumps everything up a notch. There's a X7900 Core 2 Extreme processor, 1920 x 1200 screen, 400GB 7200RPM SATA HDD and a HD DVD disc drive. The P-170 FX2 pretty much splits the difference at $2000. The laptops should be available soon on Gateway's online store.

As you may have read in our coverage of Hitachi's new 5K500 2.5-inch 500GB drive, Asus will be the first manufacturer to pack a pair of these capacious components into a set of upcoming widescreen models, giving the 17-inch M70S and 15-inch M50S the distinguished honor of being the world's first one terabyte laptops. Besides those oddly-sized drives (which can configured in either RAID 0 or RAID 1), these machines will also offer up to WUXGA or WSXGA+ resolutions (for the M70 and M50, respectively), 2.4GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo processors, AMD ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics, and a fingerprint reader, along with an optional hybrid TV tuner and remote. As usual, the good stuff (pictures, pricing) will be coming in a few days at the Show of Shows.

Shortly after unveiling the Zieo N500-HD, Evesham is hitting back with a slightly more updated version for those lusting after a few more frames-per-second. The 17-inch Zieo NX600-HD looks to be aimed squarely at gamers, as the available 2.4GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT provide all the FPS horsepower you'll (currently) need. Also packed within is a WUXGA panel, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, dual-layer DVD burner, a 56k modem, up to 250GB of SATA hard drive space, eight-cell Li-ion battery, 802.11a/b/g/n support, integrated multicard reader, built-in stereo speakers, gigabit Ethernet, and a smattering of ports including FireWire, USB 2.0, DVI, TV out, and an ExpressCard slot for good measure. Of course, such a well endowed machine won't come cheap (nor lightly), as this 8.7-pound beast will run you £1,399 ($2,813) before any of the highly desirable upgrades.[Via TechDigest]

  • Toshiba rolls out six new entrants in Satellite A205 / P205 lineups

Apparently Toshiba has been shoring up refreshes to its Satellite series of laptops, as the company has recently decided to bust out six new Labelflash-compliant models simultaneously to really get your head spinning when wading through the options. Up first is the trio of models in the P205 lineup, which represents "the company's latest 17-inch (1,440 x 900-pixel resolution) laptop line with a starting price of less than $1,000." The S637, S6267, and S6287 models all sport sub-2GHz Intel processors, up to 2GB of RAM, dual-layer SuperMulti drives, Vista Home Premium, 120GB to 200GB of hard drive space, WiFi, and Harmon Kardon speakers as well. The 15.4-inch A205 series includes the S4577, S4617, and S4639, and these models sport a 1,280 x 800 resolution, optional webcam, 802.11n, sub-1.7GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chips, up to 2GB of RAM, dual-layer DVD burner, integrated speakers, biometric scanner, NVIDIA's GeForce Go 7300 graphics, and Windows Vista runnin' the show. Click on to the links below for a bit more detail on the specifications, and in case any variety particularly catches your eye, you'll be delighted to know that the whole litter is available right now.[Via LaptopMag]

  • Clevo strikes again with NVIDIA 8800-based M570RU 17-inch laptop

    03.20.2007

If that 11.9-pound monstrosity, Clevo's D900C, is just a bit too much laptop for you, there's always second best: the 17-inch M570RU. Clevo hasn't stripped everything out of this guy, there's still the NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 graphics, room for 4GB of RAM and even the addition of Intel's latest wireless chipset for 802.11n MIMO WiFi. The screen has been pared down to a 1280 x 800 resolution, but where the M570RU really differs from its big brother is that it's running a traditional mobile version of the Core 2 Duo processor, instead of that Core 2 Duo Extreme desktop chip inside the D900C. Other frills include a webcam, subwoofer and fingerprint security, along with a snazzy orange trim. No word on price for this one, but we're guessing that just because it has a mobile processor and weighs a few less pounds, doesn't mean you'll be seeing one of these for less than a couple grand.

  • Acer releases new xSeries LCD monitors

    03.16.2007

Acer's recently carpet bombed the US with no less than five new LCD monitors in its entry-level xSeries lineup, with models ranging from 17- to 24-inches that are rather obliquely said to be designed for "multimedia, gaming and video applications." Since the specs on these two standard and three widescreen displays are average at best, we're not sure that pros in any of the above mentioned fields would really be interested -- but with prices ranging from $180 (17-inch x171s) to just $600 (24-inch widescreen x241Wsd), they could certainly give Dell, Samsung, and friends a run for their money. Specifically, the two square models (the 17-incher and 19-inch x191sd) share the exact same configuration save for maximum viewing angles, with both displays offering up 1,280 x 1,024 resolutions, eight millisecond response times, 700:1 contrast ratios, and 300cd/m² maximum brightness. The widescreen models do just a little bit better: the 19-inch x191Wsd and 22-inch x221Wsd rock 1,440 x 900 and 1,680 x 1,050 resolutions, respectively, along with five millisecond response times, 800:1 contrast ratios. and the same max brightness as their buddies; meanwhile, the 24-incher steps up the resolution to a pretty standard 1,920 x 1,200, contrast ratio to 1000:1, and brightness to 400cd/m², but retains the five millisecond response time of the other widescreens. Should be in stores now, so go nuts.[Via PC Launches]

If you've been looking for a laptop big enough to hide behind then check this, the Samsung M55. Yeah, we've seen it before, only this time it comes packing Blu-ray not HD DVD. Otherwise, it's still the same ol' 17-inch laptop with 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, up to 120GB of disk and 2GB memory, 256MB of GeForce Go 7600 graphics, Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11a/b/g WiFi, and HDMI out for sharing the HD love with your XXL flat panel at home. Only this time, it's Blu-ray discs you'll be spinning to the bemusement of Toshiba. Yeah, "into the blue" Sammy... yuk yuk, we get it.

It looks like that newfangled silver motif we spotted a few days back on Dell's 2007WFP was indeed a sign of things to come, as both the 17-inch SE177FP and 19-inch SE197FP have been officially updated to sport a snazzy new silver casing. Thankfully sparing us the bizarre-looking silver / black mishmash design on the rear, these two still sport the same black backside with a new silver bezel and stand arm. Both units tout a 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, 8-millisecond response time, 300 cd/m2 brightness, VGA inputs, and VESA compatibility; the 17-incher also boasts a 500:1 contrast ratio while the larger of the two claims a 700:1 ratio, and both are available as we speak. As for prices, the SE197FP will demand $219, while the more diminutive sibling rings up at just $179.Read - Dell's 19-inch SE197FP LCDRead - Dell's 17-inch SE177FP LCD[Thanks, Ethan]

  • PC-Koubou's 17-inch Lesance laptop: a budget anchor for Japan

Fan of 17-inch laptops are ya? Good, PC-Koubou has this 1920x1200 (WUXGA) Lesance CL706GW-C2D-GT up for grabs in Japan with a base-config touting Intel's 2GHz T7200 Core 2 Duo processor, some beefy 512MB GeForce Go 7950GTX graphics, 2GB DDR2 memory and 100GB 5400rpm SATA disk, ExpressCard/54 slot, 1.3 megapixel cam in the upper bezel, multi-format memory card reader and DVI, S-Video, and SPDIF outs. Not bad for ¥269,980 (about $2351) right? Oh, did we mention that this 2-inch, 8.8-pound sled only runs about 1-hour 40-minutes on battery? Ok, so highly portable it isn't, but not a bad deal for an all-singing, all dancing, budget desktop replacement if you're living in ultra-expensive Japan. [Via Impress]

  • ViewSonic, Apple readying 17-inch widescreen monitors?

    11.28.2006

It looks like there's a good chance that you'll soon be able to put some new monitors on your holiday wish list. DigiTimes is reporting that ViewSonic and Apple will be releasing 17-inch widescreens later this year or possibly in early 2007, leading to expectations that they'll replace the existing entry-level and mid-level displays currently on the market. As far as ViewSonic is concerned, this intel from "industry sources" seems pretty reasonable given that the company's just updated the rest of the line recently. What about on Apple's side? Yep, it's been awhile since the company has even had a 17-inch display -- so let's just say that we can't wait for CES and Macworld Expo 2007. [Via TG Daily]

What a time to be alive for the discriminating gamer: not only has next-gen console madness begun sweeping the country prior to the PS3 and Wii launches, even PC manufacturers are dropping some impressive hardware, with Toshiba offering up a Merom-powered version of its Satellite P100 hot on the heels of Dell's quad-core XPS 710 desktop. Besides a dual-core 2.0GHz T7200 CPU, the 17-inch P100-ST9742 also brings a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, top-of-the-line NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 100GB, 7,200RPM hard drive, 5-in-1 card reader, DVD SuperDuperMulti drive, and three-flavor WiFi plus Bluetooth. On the connection tip, this 7.1-pound machine delivers four USB 2.0 ports along with RGB, S-video, DVI, FireWire, S/PDIF, and both PCMCIA and ExpressCard slots. Getting your frag on Toshiba-style will set you back $2,900, and for now, this system is available exclusively through the company's website.[Via The Inquirer]

    11.08.2006

If LG's selection of 17 / 19-inch LCD-wear wasn't exactly anywhere close to your price range, I-O Data is stepping up to fill the void. The LCD-A175 series contains a trio of 17-inch models donning white, silver, and black enclosures, while the LCD-AD195 lineup offers up the same trifecta in a slightly larger form. Both displays sport a 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, 300cd/m2 brightness, 700:1 contrast ratio, 5-millisecond response time, VGA inputs, built-in power supplies, cable management systems, and dual 1.5-watt stereo speakers. The 19-incher raises the bar ever so slightly by adding a DVI input, but otherwise rocks the same decent specifications as its smaller sibling. Both monitors should be available later this month, and while the little guy will run you ¥34,800 ($295), the LCD-AD195 can be had for ¥39,800 ($337).Read- I-O Data LCD-AD195 seriesRead- I-O Data LCD-A175 series

  • Samsung's ultra-thin 17-inch AMOLED display

    by
    Paul Miller
    Paul Miller
    10.18.2006

These days it seems if it's not thin, Samsung ain't in it. They even brought their skinny ethic to desktop PCs and computer mice yesterday, so it's only natural that they'd follow those up with an incredibly skinny AMOLED desktop display to complete the setup. The active matrix / organic light emitting diode hybrid AMOLED technology has been a Samsung favorite, providing bright, colorful displays in quite thin form factors, since there's no need for a backlight. This new 17-inch display, however, is the largest we've seen by far. At a mere 12mm thick, the display rocks a 1,600 x 1,200 resolution, less than 0.01ms response time, 400 nits of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Of course, it's all conceptual for now, and there's no telling when this kind of display will make it to market, but it sure will be a welcome sight when it does.
