In my mind, the world of sports games is equally divided between two realms, each with its own cadre of fanatical followers -- titles such as Madden (Year) and MLB (Year): The Show which revel in realism and rosters, and titles such as NFL Blitz which take copious poetic liberties with trivial things like physics and gravity to add arcadey flair to our nation's athletic pastimes. While I certainly understand the appeal of the first group, I've never been a stringent follower of any sport -- therefore, the depth and simulation in these titles have no currency with me. When it comes to sports games, I want them loud, fun, fast and rewarding. The Bigs 2 possesses all four of these properties in spades. %Gallery-50343%

2K Sports has unveiled the 10th Anniversary edition of NBA 2K10 -- or, rather, TeamXbox has discovered it as 2K Sports was about to unveil it -- and it may be the most overblown limited-edition release of any game yet. The $99.99 package includes the game (obviously), an exclusive Kobe Bryant figurine by McFarlane Toys, a Kobe Bryant poster, a video about the NBA 2K series, and an account on the "Gold Room," a special VIP online lobby for the game.Oh, the package also includes a storage locker designed to hold 20 games. That's furniture. This game comes with furniture.

  • NBA 2K10 selects Kobe, NBA Live 10 settles for Howard

Dwight Howard probably wasn't much consoled by his image on the recently revealed NBA Live 10 box cover after losing the NBA Finals to the Lakers on Sunday, but the honor must have meant a little something (if not just more pocket change) to the Magic's superman -- until now. Kobe Bryant, winner and MVP of the NBA Finals, has been selected as the boastful NBA 2K10 cover athlete, cementing another dominant victory over Howard. 2K Sports' b-ball franchise has long been superior to EA Sports' annual effort, after all. We're thinking Howard should demand a trade. Source - 2K Sports Congratulates Four-Time NBA Champion Kobe BryantSource - Dwight Howard Named Cover Athlete of EA Sports NBA Live 10

Looking to vent some of that steam generated by yesterday's Xbox Live issues? Might we suggest you hit some balls, hard. 2K Sports has released a demo of The Bigs 2 -- the publisher's arcade-style baseball game -- on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which is thankfully now back up and working. The demo weighs in at 613 megabytes and allows offline head-to-head for two players. Street baseball? What'll they think of next, ghetto golf?

  • Alex Ovechkin hip checks NHL 2K10 cover

Alex Ovechkin, left winger for the Washington Capitals, and his beautiful face will be gracing the cover of this years NHL 2K10. According to the Capitals website, a "fists clenched and mouth agape" Ovechkin image has been picked for the game's cover, the third hockey game to use his image on the box.Additionally, Ovechkin is participating in 2K's first ever "public outdoor hockey motion capture session" next week in Las Vegas, taking time out of his trip to Nevada for the NHL Awards Show. Rather than employing ice, however, the session is said to be using a plastic sheet, hopes, and dreams. Unfortunately, this ain't the hockey game with first-person fighting mechanics, so those of you looking to knock some teeth out of Ovechkin's head all up close and personal-like may find yourselves wanting for more.

There was a rumor floating around today about NXE shipping on Xbox 360 game discs (via MCV) and, as you can imagine, we were surprised. So we put in a question to Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, who confirmed that Microsoft has begun including NXE with Xbox 360 games. As to whether Tom Clancy's HAWX and 2K Sports' MLB2K9 will be the first games to feature the NXE update -- as the rumor suggested -- Major Nelson could not confirm. But, from here on out, expect the update to be included on all retail game discs.

2K Sports has revealed it's developing a sequel for its arcade baseball title, The Bigs. Unsurprisingly titled The Bigs 2, there isn't much else to know beyond the game's announcement trailer (you can find that beyond the break), which shows off baseball greats Wade Boggs, Ozzie Smith, Reggie Jackson and Roberto Clemente getting their slug on. It's currently set for release this summer. While the game hasn't been confirmed for any platforms, you can bet 2K Sports will be knocking this one out of the park onto all major consoles.Who's ready to step back up to the plate?

Hey, is that -- could it be -- a demo available for a regular game? Somehow, a demo for Avalon Code, Matrix Software's action RPG designed neither for babies nor grandmas, has slipped past Nintendo's attention and onto the Nintendo Channel. Grab it before Nintendo notices and replaces it with My Fun Facts Coach! Also available is a demo for MLB Fantasy All-Stars 2K9, the sequel to last year's bizarre, cartoony baseball game. Head past the break for the list of available videos! A note about formatting: we've decided not to list the demos that are available every week. You guys know you can get the Flash Focus demo whenever you want, without us telling you.%Gallery-22487%

Fans of punching and trying to dodge the punches of others, your day has come: Take-Two has announced Don King Boxing for both the Wii and DS. Sure, the company announced the game way back in 2007, but we had no idea the game was actually still in production until we received a slight update last month. Now, Take-Two is finally getting around to reminding us about the pugilistic title's existence with a release date, new screens, and a new trailer. The game is set for release on March 31 for both DS and Wii, with the latter version supporting Nintendo's Balance Board peripheral. After watching the above trailer, we have to say we're pretty interested in the game. You see, one of our more darker pleasures in life is punching people in the face. We like to do it in video games because, well, it saves us from going to jail.%Gallery-40316%

Hey, remember 2K Sports' Don King Presents Prizefighter? Kinda? The licensed boxing game was announced last December for release last spring, back before Facebreaker bombed and Punch-Out!! made other Wii boxing games irrelevant. Despite not hearing anything at all since Balance Board functionality was revealed, the game has not been cancelled. Nintendo Everything posted some new screenshots from a mysterious source, indicating that work was being done. We found the screens' origin -- at an official site that had quietly appeared in December for the boxing game, now titled a much less confusing Don King Boxing. It looks -- okay. It's not going to divert anyone's funds away from Punch-Out!!, that's for sure. It's automatically better than Ready 2 Rumble in that it is devoid of Hasselhoff caricatures. And the vaunted Balance Board training, which is supposed to be a real workout? Looks like the Rhythm Boxing game from Wii Fit. According to GameStop, Don King Boxing is scheduled for a release on March 31, 2009. We'll see how that works out.%Gallery-40316%

Instead of looking at ridiculous screens, you get to look at ridiculous screens in motion. This trailer focuses on the 'Whack a Wall' minigame. What do you all think? It's October and many of you are still reeling from late-season collapses (hey Mets!) or more recent ones (was it the curse?). But a few of us have waited fifteen years to feel this high heading into the league championship series (and happily distracted from the Eagles' sinking record), and what better way to align our collective karma than to play a game of stickball? No, no, not actual stickball (by all means, stay seated), but 2K Sports new Xbox Live Arcade game-cum-reliable-prediction-simulator MLB Stickball (800 / $10), featuring 120 players from all 30 teams. So head out to the back-alley ballpark, Dodgers vs. Phillies, and see to it the right team wins. Well this one came right out of left field. After two weeks of big name games hitting Xbox Live Arcade, we are greeted this Wednesday with MLB Stickball from 2K Sports. We know next to nothing about the title, though a pair of screenshots reveal what looks like stickball featuring super-deformed versions of familiar players from Major League Baseball. Gamescore Blog also notes that players can unlock baseball cards and earn extra points for hitting certain objects. So, breaking a window will earn points then? Click image for new screens If you're asking yourself why we're continuing to cover this game, know that it's sort of turned into a sick obsession for us. Taking widely recognized baseball players and making their likenesses compete in minigames that are anything but their sport of choice is like taking a gardener and asking him to build a rocket and land on the moon. It's just plain silly. But, then there are small, tiny rays of hope that manage to break through the thick protection of cash-in that is the outer crust of MLB Superstars. That ray of hope? The Philly Phanatic. It can't be all* bad now, can it?%Gallery-31217%*Yes, it can. And probably will be.

2K Sports just announced that they'll be testing the Xbox Live Arcade waters with their first ever Arcade release, MLB Stickball. Yes sir, it's baseball, with a stick, hitting balls. According to the 2K folks, MLB Stickball will release to the XBLA on Wednesday, October 8th where players will be able to collect Topps cards, build teams, create custom rules and play ... well, stickball. Pretty easy enough explanation, just don't break a window when swinging, because that's considered an insta-out. Bummer too ... we're usually pretty good at breaking our neighbor's windows.[Via Game Stooge]

We think one of our readers said it best. When the game was originally announced, we thought it was going to be a train wreck, and these first screens of one of the minigames in MLB Superstars, Baseball Bocci, show that not only did the train get derailed and crash into a building, but that building was also full of babies, puppies and all of the most delicious candy in the world. We hate to be so harsh, but come on. It's baseball. Why would you try to combine it with bocci? Why?%Gallery-31217%[Via press release]
