  • Rumour: 40GB PS3 in UK tomorrow alongside 60GB price cut

Pocket Lint is reporting that the 40GB PS3 is coming even sooner than we expected. They have had several separate reports that the new SKU will drop tomorrow, October 5th. Not only that, but the 60GB will be dropping in price to £369 at the same time. While we haven't been able to confirm these reports, and therefore have no choice but to label them as a rumour, we're remaining optimistic and look forward to see what will happen tomorrow. Pocket Lint is also stating that, while two of the four USB ports and the memory card readers will be gone, WiFi and software emulated backwards compatibility will remain. This is a particular point of interest for us, particularly as Play.com pointed out that the 40GB would have no backwards compatability whatsoever (though that information, as well as the other specifications, are now gone from their site). We're looking forward to seeing how this progresses and, if Pocket Lint and their sources are correct, we may not have long to wait.

Gamestore Magazine reports that the 40GB PS3 will be available for purchase next week, October 10th, in Italy. There will be a choice of two systems: a basic 40GB for €399, or a bundle which includes two games and an extra controller for €499.Either this is one rumor that simply refuses to die, or this is one of Sony's worst-kept secrets ever. The 40GB debacle seems to continue every day (in spite of Sony's denial of a "big bang" announcement) -- stay tuned for more.[Via Joystiq]

While expectations continue to build regarding Sony's probable, yet still unconfirmed 40GB PlayStation 3, Italy's Gamestore magazine has stoked the fires of speculation by reporting that Italian gamers will be able to purchase the 40GB model on October 10 for the lower (in relation to PS3's current European retail value) and more consumer-friendly price of €399 ($564). Additionally, the report also makes mention of a €499 ($705) 'starter pack' SKU, which according to the mag will include two unspecified games and an extra controller. This latest news comes on the back of a string of rumors that simply refuses to die. If accurate, how much longer can Sony pretend to keep a lid on this?

  • Sony: No 'big bang' announcement on Oct. 12

Oct. 12 is a date we've all had circled on our calendars for the past week, ever since GamePro France reported that Sony had plans for a "big bang" announcement. But now it appears that Sony has no such plans at all, according to Eurogamer. The site contacted Sony and was told it never announced an impending announcement in the first place and has no such announcement planned. However, this could be a ploy to lower gamer's vigilance while Sony sneaks in and punches us in the gut with the $399 40GB PlayStation 3 announcement.

As if we needed further confirmation that the 40GB PS3 is on its way Play.com are listing such a creature on their website. Though it is not yet available, and has no price attached to it, there is a sign up sheet where you can express interest by submitting your email address. The listing says that the 40GB PS3 will lack any backwards compatibility and will have only two USB ports. We're curious that there is no mention of the memory card readers as we would have suspected those to be the first to go, before the USB ports. The biggest piece of information to come out of this (other than an all-out confirmation that the 40GB is going to happen) is that Europe (or, at least, the UK) will be getting a slice of the 40GB pie. This is great news considering David Reeves, president of SCEE, has stated that a price cut will not be happening this year in European territories, instead opting to produce "value added bundles" like the starter pack. How much the 40GB will cost in Europe is still a mystery, though a £299 price point has been kicking around recently. With the new PS3 SKU all but confirmed, we're anxious to see what Sony's "big bang" announcement will be later this month. If retailers are already advertising for the device on their site then Sony are going to have to reveal a little more than we already know to truly impress us. We'll see what happens when the twelfth swings around.[Thanks Daniel!]

  • Rumor: 40GB PS3 shows up in UPC database [update]

We received a tip that a UPC database website is now listing a UPC for the "Sony PlayStation 3 40GB." Apparently the site gets its info from GS1 sites, which give UPC information to the public. We're not certain how reliable the database is, so we're tacking "rumor" on this story for now. Interestingly, we did test various UPCs we had lying around, like the one on our copy of BioShock (710425299636) and another on a carton of Half & Half (075457427007), and all showed up correctly -- the website claims not to allow user generated data.If the PS3 40GB UPC listing is correct (we're attempting other avenues of verification at the moment), it would be another log on the rumor-fire that just won't die. The key "feature" of the 40GB PS3 model would be its alleged $399 price tag, bringing the system into much more financially-friendly waters, and hopefully increasing system sales. If this UPC code holds up, it'll be hard for Sony to keep a lid on the 40-gigger much longer, but for now it's still very much in rumor territory.Update: Engadget's got word of the 40GB model appearing in Best Buy's internal inventory.Update 2: PS3 Fanboy shows Play.com has it now too.[Thanks J. Jenkins]

Engadget has posted several Best Buy inventory documents that appear to confirm what we've all been awaiting with bated breath – the $399 40GB PlayStation 3.The documents also reveal the new model will come packaged with the Spiderman 3 Blu-ray and has an "In Stock Date" of Oct. 28. However, the console's actual release date was not filled in, so we don't know exactly when it will be available to the public, but the newly rumored Nov. 16 release date is certainly possible. At this point, we can't wait for Sony's supposed Oct. 12 "big bang" announcement to see if there are any more tricks up its sleeve.

The $399 PS3 "rumor" won't go away. And for good reason, too. The evidence clearly shows that something is going to happen ... soon. While most rumors from "industry insiders" we'll shrug off, this one from ars technica has caught our attention. Why? Well, ars technica is certainly far more reliable than some other rumor-mongering websites.According to the report, a new $399 PS3 will be available on or before November 16th. This is part of the crucial holiday buying season, and a $399 PS3 will be far more attractive than the current $499 60GB model. In fact, some may argue it would be approximately 20% more attractive to the average consumer. It won't be too long before we find out the truth. Stay tuned.[Thanks, Ruibing!]

  • PS3 price-cut coming October 12th?

Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you've been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a "Big Bang" press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It's truly a good time to be a buyer.Read -- PlayStation 3 getting holiday makeover: $399 PS3 rumor has legsRead -- Rumor: Sony has 'big bang' announcement Oct. 12

GamePro France is reporting that Sony has plans for a "big bang" announcement set for Oct. 12. While rumors and speculation have been filling message boards across the internet, we feel safe to say this announcement will probably focus on the mysterious 40GB PlayStation 3.Let's take a look at the recent events surrounding Sony's new model: The CECHG01 model is listed at Blu-raySavings.com Sony filed for a new PS3 model with the FCC Sony declines to comment on the rumors Sky says a cheaper 40GB PS3 with less features will soon be announced We'll, can't be happy enough for Oct. 12 to come so we can finally get some real answers, but who knows, Sony could announce a new JetMoto game, right?[via N4G]

If you still needed more confirmation about Sony's new PS3 model, which most believe will be a slimmed-down 40GB unit, this might be just what you need. Sony's Blu-raySavings.com lists the new model as a qualifier to receive five free Blu-ray movies once you've purchased the system.Earlier this week, Sony spun us into a frenzy when an FCC filing was published detailing some features of the CECHG01 model. At this point, we're not too sure what Sony's waiting for as it keeps declining to comment on one of the worst-kept secrets of recent memory. Just go ahead and announce the thing already![via NeoGAF]

We know Sony probably has a new PS3 model in the works, but this is just plain ol' silly. Could the left-for-dead 20GB PS3 be making a triumphant return from the grave? If EB Games' website is to be believed, it could seem so as the retailer lists the stripped-down model for only $450, which is about $50 more than the rumored 40GB unit. Most likely, the company is trying to burn through some of its old stock or it's just a mistake, but hey, if you really need a cheaper PS3 right now, why not take the plunge?[via Destructoid]

Eidos Chairman Tim Ryan believes the PS3 will live up to its potential. He said so in a written statement that was presented to Eidos' parent company SCi recently, but Ryan, along with many others, thinks Sony must drop the PS3's price before it can be all it can be."The board continues to believe in the long-term commercial success of PlayStation 3 but believes this may take more time than originally forecast by Sony," he wrote. "The board is of the opinion that the key driver to the acceleration of the installed base of PlayStation 3 will be a further hardware price cut."We're not sure if Ryan got the memo, but Sony has plans to release a more wallet-friendly PS3 in the coming months. But could Ryan be mudslinging to redirect some of the blame he and his company is receiving after reporting a $60 million fiscal year loss? Ouch!

The rumors of Sony's mythical 40GB PS3 have been swirling around almost as fast as Lyndsay Lohan ruining her career, but until now, we haven't had any hard proof of the former. A recent Sony FCC filing suggests a new PS3 model, designated CECHG01, is coming, despite the company's recent denials.Unlike what previous stories suggested, it looks like Wi-Fi and USB ports will remain in this new model, but there wasn't any information on the size of its hard drive, which I'm sure the ladies are just dying to know.If Sony can keep everything inside the PS3 that makes it so great, but drop the hard drive down a bit and hit the more consumer-friendly price tag of $399, it could find that audience who has been reluctant to join the Sony Army.[via Engadget]

It has been rumored, repeatedly, that Sony intends to unveil a 40GB PlayStation 3. While this may not be proof, a recent FCC exhibit from Sony reveals a PS3 with a new model number, CECHG01.All the apparent specifications -- WiFi, Bluetooth, CPU, etc. -- are identical to the other PS3 models. As Engadget points out, Sony likes to use a new model number for every hard drive tier. Whether or not this is an increase or decrease in HDD capacity remains to be seen, but it does look like Sony is prepared to unveil another choice for potential PS3 owners.[Via Engadget]

  • Rumour: 40GB PS3 coming says Sky; 299 in UK says CVG

    09.24.2007

In a (not very) surprise revelation Sky, the British broadcasting supplier, has stated that they expect the fabled 40GB PS3 to be announced this week. They claim that this new model will lack several features of the 60GB/80GB such as backwards compatability (both hardware and software emulation) as well as USB ports. We're more inclined to believe that WiFi would be removed before USBs as some games will require them. Imagine if people lured into buying a new PS3 at a lower price weren't able to play games like Guitar Hero III, Rock Band or anything involving the PlayStation Eye. The price is still rumoured to be at $399, which we've always said would make an excellent low-end price for the system. Elsewhere reports are coming in that the UK will be receiving this new SKU as well and that it will sell for £299. Though all of this information is still classified as heavily rumoured, CVG has been told by multiple sources that Sony will introduce the 40GB model in Great Britain (and, presumably, the rest of Europe) at this price, which makes it around the same price as an Xbox 360 Elite. To cap off today's rumour-fest, Sony was touted to make these announcements at Tokyo Game Show (which didn't happen) or early this week. We'll let you know what happens.

Sky News is reporting that a 40GB model will soon be announced by Sony. According to an "electronic manufacturing news source" of theirs, Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn will handle production of the unit, the same company that produces the PS2. Sky News goes on to speculate that the new console might lose "USB ports or backwards compatibility" to keep the model cheap. With no announcement made during Tokyo Games Show, Sky says the introduction could be made early this weak to "spoil" the Halo 3 launch. Well, that window seems to have passed as it's already evening in Japan. All we do know about the 40GB PS3 at this point is it's a rumor that just won't die.[Via NextGen]

Ars Technica has their very own mole, who they say is very good at what he does. Looks like he dug up some interesting stuff on Sony's plan for the holiday season. The rumor is as follows: the 80GB PS3 falls to $499.99, and a brand new 40GB PS3 is offered at $399.99.Analysts have predicted the 80GB price drop before. As for this 40GB model, we've had a few tip offs that it might be in the works. In addition, the mole adds that Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray may be packed in with one or both of the bundles, and the PS2 drops to $99.99. Of course, these are merely rumors, so don't hold your breath while waiting for lower priced PS3s. We expect to find out more at Tokyo Game Show.[via Digg]

  • Microsoft makes bet: Sony will unveil $399 PS3 this year

It wasn't too long ago when a Microsoft executive was trash-talking Sony. Nay, going so far as to make a bet against their rival gaming manufacturer. Case in point: J. Allard made predicted that Sony's PSP would downright flop. He was wrong, and to honor a bet with Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, he donned dreads and updated his Microsoft company profile page, admitting "N'Gai had it right," and that the PSP was not a failure.Looks like Microsoft is up to the same antics again. This time, Xbox director of technical strategy and attack blogger Andre "Ozymandias" Vrignaud, is the one to take a bet with N'Gai. He states that "My prediction is that you're going to see the creation of a new, low-end SKU this holiday. It'll likely remove integrated WiFi, memory card reader, and most controversially, all backward compatibility. (Remember, there's still some back-compat hardware in even the new "software only" back compat SKUs; removing the remaining CPU is a significant cost savings.) You'll see a new WiFi dongle made available. And finally, this low-end SKU will likely come with a smaller 40 GB hard drive. The low-end price will be set at $399, with the higher-end 80 GB SKU dropping to $499."An interesting concept, to say the least. Ozymandias expects it to arrive by Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year in the US. N'Gai accepted Microsoft's bet ... only this time, the loser will have to buy a steak dinner instead of alter their hair styles (which will simply not be as fun to write about).[Thanks, Copa!]

  • Rumorong: 40GB PlayStation 3 at $399

And here we were worried Sony was going to officially cause us to have a good relationship with our neighborhood bartender and liquor store attendant if they kept this rollercoaster going. A piece of random chatting printed in the loose talk section of the last issue of Game Informer hinted that Sony might release or announce a 40GB version of the PS3 at a delicious $399 price. However, it was just speculation, nothing more. That piece of idle chat made a second pass as a rumor this week stating that once the "clearance sale" is over, Sony would announce the new model. We checked with Game Informer and they explained, "That was one of our pre-E3 rumors that we ran in the loose talk section of the last issue. It turns out that talk was not only loose, it was wrong."But while we're clearly and emphatically speculating, if there ever is a "low-end" 40GB $399 system with all the specs of the 60GB model (minus the full backwards compatibility, but hopefully with the new rumored Sixaxis), who cares about that extra 20GB of hard drive space? David Reeves sure doesn't.[Via PS3Fanboy]
