Want a really good excuse to spend $1,700 on a DSLR? Check out the 24fps "Dublin's People" short after the break, shot with one of those fancy new 7D DSLRs from this little company named "Canon" that you may have heard of. The verdict? Filmmaker Philip Bloom loves the new hardware, and says the rolling shutter problems of the 5D Mark II have been slightly reduced (at a cursory glance, anyway). Still, he's hoping Canon also releases a firmware update for existing 30fps-limited 5D Mark II owners -- he owns two.[Via planet5D]

We'll be back later with more impressions, but we figured you'd like to see Canon's new EOS 7D in a video quickie, live at IFA. It's short, just a minute, but enough time to show off the 7D's built-in digital level, 19-point autofocus, and a naked shutter blasting though 8 frames per second. Now man-up son, and hit that link.

Now everyone pretend to be surprised here. Canon's gone official with what everyone has already seen and read about in detail, the EOS 7D. Specs look to be exactly what we heard, too: 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with 8 frames per second continuous shooting, 1080p 24fps HD video with full manual control, a 3-inch LCD, 19-point AF system, and wireless flash control. Mum's still the word on pricing and availability, though. Hit up the read link for the full press release, as well as some hands-on impressions care of Digital Photography Review. Update: Canon's press release has now gone live. Price is $1,699 body-only or $1,899 with an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens, and target launch is set for end of September. • Canon EOS 7D pics and specs leak out

We saw the top, we saw the poster, and now it looks like we've got more or less the whole deal: Canon's EOS 7D has been leaked in (most of) its gory detail. At the heart there's an 18 megapixel sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors, which shoots stills at 8 FPS with ISO from 100 to 6400 and a special 12800 ISO mode. The 3-inch LCD has a 920,000 dot resolution, while the viewfinder offers 100% coverage and a built-in digital level. Naturally the camera picks up the HD movie capabilities of the 5D, but no word on how it might expand upon them just yet. All this info has been gleaned from a Chinese forum, so we're still obviously awaiting on official word from Canon -- but if the rapid leakage rate is any indication, it can't be too far off. • Purported Canon EOS 7D poster, lenses turn up online

Well, it's nearly become an annual event at this point, but it looks like those patiently waiting for a Canon EOS 7D now have a bit more fodder to consider, with a purported new poster and some new lenses for the camera recently turning up online. As you can see above, however, that poster reveals only a few details and an even less complete look at the camera itself, which was most recently spotted in pieces. The rumored new lenses, on the other hand, are making themselves seen considerably more clearly and, if the pics (after the break) are to believed, include an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and a longer EF-S 18-135m f/3.5-5.6 IS. Still looking for a bit more? There's charts and graphs at the read link below.[Thanks, Bruno]

  • Is this the top of a Canon EOS 7D, or are we just hopelessly optimistic?

C'mon Canon, this is getting just a wee bit ridiculous. Yesterday's NYC event came and went without nary a mention of the just-has-to-be-real EOS 7D DSLR, though we did see the latest piece of mildly convincing evidence while canvassing those six new PowerShots. Today, we're taking a look at what appears to be the top plate of the forthcoming (or so we hear) camera, though the fanboys over at DPReview can't seem to say for sure if this is a fake or even a sensible design for such a beastly shooter. So, we're asking you, dear readers -- what do you make of this? Are you finally a believer that the almost mythical 7D is actually just around the bend? Or do you think we're all crazy for being in said camp?

  • Canon EOS 7D image appears online, might be in Best Buy systems

Canon might have announced a slew of new compacts today, but we're thinking the most exciting news might be this image of the legendary EOS 7D. That flash button would indicate the presence of a built-in flash, and those mic holes hint at video features, but apart from that we've got little else to go on -- there are whispers that the Best Buy inventory system is listing the body at $2700 and the kit with an EF 28-135 lens at $2900, but we can't verify those at the moment. We're dying to find out more about this one, stay tuned.[Thanks, manhog]Read - 7D image at dpreview forumsRead - 7D in Best Buy systems at Canon Rumors

Seriously, we've been hearing about the EOS 7D for well over a year now, with the chatter predictably heating up before every major trade show -- and with just over a month before Photokina, it's happening all over again. Hopefully Canon actually has this semi-legendary $1,899 full-frame DSLR to show us this time -- the 5D is getting pretty ancient.P.S.- We have no way of knowing if this image is real or not, so don't get too excited out there.[Thanks, David]
