The team behind the popular indie adventure game Night in the Woods has cut ties with game developer Alec Holowka following allegations of harassment and abuse from fellow game maker and former romantic partner Zoë Quinn. A planned physical release for the title from Limited Run games has been postponed and an unnamed project being worked on by the team has been cancelled, according to the development team. An iOS port of Night in the Woods remains in progress.

Adventure/exploration game Night in the Woods achieved its $50,000 goal on Kickstarter after one day on the funding platform. The indie story-focused game comes from Infinite Fall, a two-person team composed of Aquaria developer Alec Holowka and animator Scott Benson. Night in the Woods has players exploring the town Possum Springs as college dropout Mae, a cat with recently-developed "paranormal abilities." Mae joins a ragtag group of "loser friends," including a bear named Angus, described as "that kid in school who wore ties and fedoras for no good reason." Mae's growing abilities grant her access to new parts of the town as the adventure wears on, including an area near Possum Springs' old mine where "something in the woods" resides. Night in the Woods is planned for PC and Mac, and is currently estimated to launch in January 2015. The Kickstarter project will close on November 22.

  • Canabalt and Aquaria devs sign their names in 'Grave'

"So far, GRAVE doesn't really fit in any existing genre that I know of," writes Adam 'Atomic' Saltsman. "If you're fond of stretched metaphors, you might say that It's sort of like Farmville meets StarCraft, or maybe Super Crate Box meets Desktop Dungeons. Anyways, we're still exploring the possibilities, so I don't want to say too much. For now let's just call it 'an arcade game' and we'll get into more detail as we go!" Alright then: Grave is a new "arcade game" made notable, for the time being, by the pedigree behind it. Adam Saltsman, the Texas-based creator of Canabalt and the numerically/spherically infuriating Hundreds, is handling art and design ("mostly"), while the co-developer of the award-winning Aquaria, Alec Holowka, is heading up programming and sound (also "mostly"). Today marks the debut of the pair's upbeat Grave Tumblr, which will explore and divulge the game's construction little by little every Friday. Beyond music and art, Saltsman and Holowka will also be posting about the design problems they encounter. Designers and players might learn a thing or two, and (sorry sorry sorry) leave wise from their Grave.

  • Behold the unrelenting cuteness of 'Offspring Fling!'

The blurb on the front of Offspring Fling!'s fake, SNES-inspired box art invites potential players to "experience the thrill of motherhood in this baby throwing adventure," which unsurprisingly is an invitation we're remarkably inclined to accept.Developed by Kyle Pulver and scored by Alec Holowka, Offspring Fling! puts the player in control of a "poor forest creature" who must locate her lost children across 100-plus levels. Once found, said children can be stacked upon the forest creature's head and then tossed about to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. It sounds fairly simple, but as you can tell from the above trailer, things can get a little squirrelly.Offspring Fling! is available for $7.99 on PC and OSX, direct from the game's official website. There's also a playable in-browser demo that we heartily recommend, if only because we want the rest of the world to experience the simple pleasure of picking up one of these tiny little baby-chick-bunny-duckling things.
