The update planned to end crashing and save file loss in the Xbox One iteration of Battlefield 4 continues to be delayed, but developer DICE has revealed a near-term window in which it hopes the patch will debut. Like the PlayStation 4 game, the Xbox One version of Battlefield 4 was scheduled for an update to fix its ongoing crashing and online instability issues. That patch should have appeared during the week of December 2, but for reasons not made public never did. Instead, DICE has decided to roll the changes of that patch into the game's next update, which should appear at the end of this week or the beginning of next. "The update that was originally meant to go live the week of Dec 2 was delayed, but we decided to bring those fixes to the next upcoming Xbox One update," stated DICE representative "trydling" in the studio's latest Battlelog update. "This new combined Xbox One patch is currently in testing and certification, and we will release it as soon as possible. We are hoping to get it live late this week or early next week. We will keep you updated." It's unknown exactly what this patch will fix, though we're told that full details will be made available shortly before the update appears. For the moment, DICE will only say that it "will focus on stability and some of the feedback we've seen from the community, including a fix for the one-hit kill bug and Commander EMP blur effect."

  • Battlefield 4's Battlescreen won't hit PS3, Xbox 360

Battlescreen won't work on PS3 or Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 4, Battlelog Assistant Producer Jesper Nielsen tells Engadget. Battlelog for Battlefield 4 includes a Battlescreen feature that populates the player's current, live map on a tablet, smartphone or PC – but only when playing the game on Xbox One, PS4 or PC. "Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications," Nielsen says. "There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code." Battlelog for Battlefield 4 will feature regional leaderboards, will allow players to build weapons loadouts on a secondary screen before starting the game or during wait time between deaths, and will let players change servers mid-game, alongside the standard stats readings.

In holiday 2011, while fans of both the Call of Duty and Battlefield series were gearing up for virtual war, the publishers behind each megafranchise were gearing up for a different type of virtual war. With the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Activision's in-game social network -- dubbed "Call of Duty Elite" -- went live. Just prior, alongside the launch of competing title Battlefield 3, EA introduced its "Battlelog" system. And thus began a parallel virtual war for fans' loyalty, battled via user numbers and engagement metrics. It's a pretty boring war, but its armaments are the games many of us know and love. The first-person-shooter social network war continues to this day (in silence, of course), with EA recently stepping up its rhetoric surrounding this October's entry, Battlefield 4. Since E3, where some new Battlelog features were shown for the first time during EA's presser, the company's released its first big Battlelog marketing video (seen below). But we wanted more details about what the first next-gen version of Battlelog will look like, and what EA's DICE studio has been able to accomplish with new hardware.

Battlefield 4's multiplayer will feature a Commander Mode, EA has announced at E3, similar to the one seen back in Battlefield 2142. The mode will allow players to send commands out or deliver intel or artillery fire to five-man squads from tablets and other devices across Battlelog, in maps that will support up to 64 players at a time. EA showed off a demo of the mode on a map called the Siege of Shanghai map, and will have gameplay streaming live from the show on Battlefield.com all this week. %Gallery-190958%

  • EA's Battlelog app updated for iPhone 5, Medal of Honor Warfighter

EA's Battlefield stat-tracking iOS app, Battlelog, just received a new update that will make iPhone 5 owners smile. The refresh adds full support for the iPhone 5's larger display, as well as the new ability to compare your in-game standing with that of your friends. On-the-go soldiers who recently replaced their Battlefield 3 habit with a Medal of Honor: Warfighter habit will be happy to hear that "initial support" for the new title has been added to the app as well. So far, this appears to just give you the ability to check basic stats and leaderboards, though given EA's choice of wording for the announcement, we imagine this will be fleshed out further in the future. Electronic Arts has released an update for the iOS version of Battlelog. The new update adds "initial support" for Medal of Honor: Warfighter, as well as support for the iPhone 5 according to the Battlelog Twitter account. The iTunes listing for Battlelog also notes that the update packs in support for iOS 6 (though strangely doesn't mention the Warfighter support). Finally, Battlelog can put that extra screen real estate to use, giving you more space than ever for your friends' aggressive victory messages and lewd emoticons.

Electronic Arts has acquired Battlelog developer ESN. Battlelog is Battlefield 3's stat-tracking and social system behind the game on PC, while on consoles it... you know, still not entirely sure what the point was. Something extraneous to sign up for?"We couldn't be more excited about this opportunity and the team is looking forward to focus all of its energy on DICE, Battlelog and the Battlefield series," ESN wrote in its announcement of the deal. "As we're teaming up with EA and DICE, we are looking for more talented developers and designers to join our studio and help create some of the best online game services out there."EA's upcoming shooter Medal of Honor: Warfighter will also support Battlelog.

You can find your relevant time zone here. The downtime will be spent enacting the following updates to the Battlefield 3 server and Battlelog, as provided by EA:

  • DICE vows continued support for Battlefield 3 in light of Battlefield 4 announcement

EA officially revealed Battlefield 4 today as a project being developed at the company's Sweden-based DICE studio. Beyond that, however, no one's saying a peep about the game. Lest you forget, three more DLC packs are planned for DICE's last game, Battlefield 3, and that apparently means DICE isn't ready to talk Battlefield 4 just yet."There is no further Battlefield 4 news at this point," reads a post from DICE on the Battlefield 4 subpage. "With the Back to Karkand and Close Quarters expansion packs already out, Armored Kill around the corner, and End Game and Aftermath still on the horizon, we're looking forward to many more hours of gameplay with you, and can't wait to see the stories you will tell through Battlelog and player created videos."With Medal of Honor's 2010 reboot, EA set out to match its competition's annual shooter, Call of Duty. EA's Los Angeles-based Danger Close studio is in charge of EA's Medal of Honor franchise, apparently trading off years with DICE and the Battlefield franchise. The two franchises currently share DICE's Frostbite 2.0 game engine, and Danger Close's next MoH employs DICE's Battlelog system as well. Thus far, EA has yet to best Activision's Call of Duty powerhouse (in terms of sales and critical reception) with its two shooter franchises.

Electronic Arts has launched the official Battlefield 3 Battlelog app for iOS nearly ... one, plus two, plus two, plus one ... six months after the game's launch. There is no mention of an official Android app.The app is similar to that of the Battlelog browser stat-tracking experience, allowing players to keep up to date on what their Battlefield friends were doing, when they were still playing the game three months ago.The app will be more timely when it's used to satiate crippling Battlefield data addiction after Close Quarters -- the first major addition to Battlefield 3 since December -- launches in June.

  • DICE promises vigilance against Battlefield 3 cheaters

Finding out that cheating has apparently become rampant in Battlefield 3's online multiplayer is somewhat of a travesty, considering how much some members of our staff play it. Neither of our main combatants have ever actually spotted a cheater (at least not in any verifiable way) while playing on Xbox 360, but the game's developer is nonetheless tracking down these nefarious rogues, issuing stat resets and outright bans to offending players across 360, PS3, and PC. The Stockholm, Sweden-based devs at EA DICE "recently banned another batch of several hundred confirmed cheaters," and are only stepping up their efforts all the more as time goes on. The first measure in this initiative will be an addition to Battlelog, one which allows players to report offenders via their online profiles, regardless of what platform they're playing on. With any luck, between the community and DICE, the contingent trying to ruin everyone's online experience will be stomped out quickly.

  • Downloadable PS3 Battlefield 3 suffering Battlelog issues, EA working on a patch

Did you know EA released Battlefield 3 digitally on PSN in Europe on October 27? That's pretty cool ... in theory, anyway. In execution, the launch of the PSN version has been marred by issues with the Battlelog service. "EA have confirmed that there are issues with the digital build of Battlefield 3 (on the PS Store) which will be affecting people trying sign into Battlelog," Playstation Community Team member "RabidWalker" said on the EU forum. "They are currently working on a patch for this, although no ETA has been given at the moment." Eurogamer mentions the theory that the issue is caused by incompatibility with Online Pass. The PSN version can't be bought used, the theory suggests, and the requirement was insufficiently patched out of the game. Online Pass issues interacting with stat tracking service issues -- if that's the case, it would be two features that didn't exist just a couple years ago, teaming up to make a game unplayable. To the future!

(Disclaimer: The bulk of this review appeared earlier this week when we published our final word on Battlefield 3 for PC. This review includes that text, as well as specific comments about the console versions of the game.) Let's sit down for a few minutes and talk about Battlefield 3. Let's step outside of the hype, the constant back and forth between fans of the series and fans of, you know, that series. Let's leave the baggage attached by EA's masochistic desire to sidle right up against that game, and we can ignore that beta too. I know it's hard. But let's do it anyway. Instead, let's talk about what we've been told is DICE's most ambitious, biggest game ever. And let's talk about how Battlefield 3 is simultaneously disappointing in that respect, and brilliant in others, and why that might be OK anyway -- maybe even great.%Gallery-137343%

Battlefield 3's lock-and-key social gaming network, Battlelog, is scheduled to launch its beta in September, its full system in October, and is currently in an extremely selective alpha testing stage. But that doesn't mean non-alpha players can't see what it looks like, right now. The Robin Hood of Battlelog sent us some behind-the-scenes screens of the alpha social and profile system, all of which you can check out below. We'd love to tell you that EA DICE explained the Battlelog functionality coming to Battlefield 3, but the Swedish devs only cursorily discussed it in a recent blog post. Most of what is shown off here was already gleaned from accidentally posted German screens earlier this month. DICE does point out one crucial aspect, however: "It's absolutely free." It's still unclear whether the Battelog will be available in-game or solely accessed via PCs, but given Autolog's implementation in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, we imagine at least some form of the service will be available via consoles. Thankfully it seems that we won't be waiting long to hear more, as the post notes plans to reveal the "full suite of features" in Battlelog "at a later date." The multiplayer beta kicks off in just two months, so that "later date" will likely be "sooner" than ... erm .. well, you know.%Gallery-128487%

  • 'Battlelog' images leak on German Battlefield 3 site (think Autolog with guns)

The German-language Battlefield 3 blog accidentally published some screens from the game's not-yet-revealed "Battlelog" system, a web (and in-game?) stat-driven social layer that borrows its naming convention from the Autolog, first featured in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. The available screens show off a voice- and text-based chat interface, player progression stats, and a Battle Feed that unapologetically recalls a Facebook wall. For PC players, it looks like you'll be able to join multiplayer games and resume your campaign directly from the website. If the Battlelog reveal is anything like the actual game's reveal, we'll be seeing a bunch of PC footage before EA finally shows off the console implementation. [Thanks, Justin]%Gallery-128487%
