Anyone that has kids, or regularly interacts with kids, knows that getting them to talk on the phone is a nightmare at the best of times. Brooklyn-based studio Toymail knows this, so it's bringing "The Mailmen" to the UK to make things a little easier for friends and family to interact with the little people in their lives. You see, The Mailmen are small battery-powered toys that allow anyone with the free companion app to send voice messages to kids. You record a message, it gets sent to one of five animal-themed characters (including Rochester, Buck, Milksop, Fairfax and Snort) your child owns and they can immediately send one back.

Remember that internet-of-things they keep talking about? There's now a new "thing," namely the iKettle, a $160 appliance that sends you a missive when your water boils or hits that perfect temperature. It connects via WiFi to a companion iOS or Android app, which can ask if you want to "pop the kettle on" when you wake up, or offer to keep the water warm after it's boiled. It also features such culinary touches as precise temperature control (it's 80 degrees for green tea, don'tcha know), a stainless steel design and a filtered spout. The iKettle's now up for pre-order and should be available in a month or two, so get to work on those matcha recipes, tea snobs.

  • Woodstation acts like a weather station, looks like a dead tree

Usually the intersection of woodcraft and gadgetry consists of little more than taking a piece of gear and putting it in a box. Woodstation may be no different, but at least it does its thing with some style, placing its LED display beneath the surface, allowing it to seemingly display weather data on the wood itself. And if that weren't enough, the device contains a motion sensor (it turns itself on when you enter the room) as well as date, time, and alarm functions. Available in a maple or walnut finish, this bad boy is currently available in the UK for £89.95 (about $147). And unlike the Amazon Kindling, this thing actually works.[Via Pocket-lint]

Brits looking for an in-car GPS solution that they can also throw in a sack and take along on a constitution will soon have a new option from Chinese manufacturer Shinco. The Voyager GPS 400 is a PDA-size receiver in white with a 4-inch, 480 x 272 color touchscreen, birds-eye view mapping, SD slot for MP3 playback, and preloaded maps covering the two million hottest destinations on the British Isles. You seem to get a pretty solid accessory pack in the box as well, with a windshield mount, extension antenna, decent carrying case, and both car and wall chargers standard. E-tailer Firebox is currently taking pre-orders for the Voyager, which is supposed to arrive on the 11th, for a very reasonable $420.[Via Tech Digest]
