Looks like LogMeIn Inc. has suddenly cottoned on to the freemium business model, deciding to offer its basic remote desktop app for iPhone and iPad entirely gratis. Previously, you had to hand over $29.99 for the simple pleasure of accessing your PC and Mac desktops via LogMeIn Ignition, but the new free version (simply 'LogMeIn') amply provides for that barebones service, while bells and whistles are reserved for those who buy an in-app subscription to LogMeIn Pro at $40 per year -- including things like HD video and sound streaming, file transferring and integration with cloud storage services . Confusing matters slightly, the old Ignition app won't die. It'll live on in the App Store with a massively inflated price to support old Ignition customers and -- most importantly -- give them grandfather rights to Pro features, so they don't feel left out and start sniffing around the competition. There's a full PR after the break, and it also mentions that Android update is on its way in 2012.

  • LogMeIn Ignition update adds file management / transfer capability

LogMeIn Ignition (US$29.99) is a popular tool for making hassle-free remote control sessions to Macs and PCs. We've reviewed the universal app on TUAW before, and it's a well-designed tool for those who may not want to play with router settings and firewall ports to get a VNC connection going. Now LogMeIn has added a new feature to Ignition that raises the bar for remote control apps. In an update that appeared last week to version 2.0.264, LogMeIn Ignition gained the ability to view, transfer, and save folders between your iOS device and Mac or PC. The capability is easy to use and very simple; you have a choice of either doing a remote control session or a file manager session when you log into your remote computers. Once that's done, Ignition keeps a status screen available containing windows with either the remote control or file manager sessions for each computer you've connected to. File transfer works very well. In the app is a Local Files folder where you can store those documents that you bring over from your Mac or PC. You can then open those documents in a compatible app (i.e., Pages for .doc / .docx files) and make changes. There is no "round-tripping" capability -- that is, you can't then save those documents back onto a PC or Mac through the app. However, I'm wondering if the "Saved from Other Apps" folder that appears in the Local Files folder is designed for future use by compatible apps so you can do a round trip. If you have more than one remote computer that you're connected to with LogMeIn Ignition, you can actually move files between those remote computers. There's now support for AirPrint printing of documents that you copy or move to your iPad, and the app can even wake a sleeping remote computer through Wake-On-LAN. Existing users of LogMeIn Ignition should make sure that they update their app as soon as possible, and those who are looking for a remote control or file management app may want to consider LogMeIn Ignition for their work. • Dear Aunt TUAW: From Earth to Romania

Dear Aunt TUAW, I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro and a 4 year old MacBook Pro that I will be taking to Romania next month to give to my in-laws so we can video conference with them. Seeing as they are not very computer literate, I want to be able to perform remote control / screen sharing in case the need should arise. I know that OSX has built-in screen sharing capabilities on a local network, but over the Internet is something else altogether. I know that there are several services, such as LogMeIn, that provide this service for a fee, but I was wondering if I could do this without paying for a service. Can you direct me to some documentation as to how to set this up? ssh configuration, port forwarding on the firewall, etc.... that might be able to get me started? Or make a recommendation that would be how you would do this. Love, Your Nephew Chris M.

What happens when an object in motion meets an immovable object? Let me put that another way. Instead of "object in motion," think: "girl skiing." Instead of "immovable object," think "tree." The outcome? A big old "OUCH!", a number of broken bones, and quite a bit of time to be spent at the hospital. Enter geek mom and an iPad. Speaking from (recent) experience, if you're going to get caught up at a hospital for hours and hours on end, with limited access to your home and office, you're not going to do much better than to bring along a few toys like the ones I have with me today. Let me back up a moment. This morning, my laptop died. I'll get around to fixing it but when you're running to the hospital to make sure that you're there at the time you promised, and you were up until 2 the night before, and the laptop is dead, it's time to consider going commando with an iPad. Sure, you'll feel exposed and helpless. The comfort of a normal desktop unit cannot be matched by an iPad's apparently limited abilities. Yet, I totally lucked out today. Between my iPad, wireless Apple Bluetooth keyboard, and a few other strategic goodies, I am actually able to get a little work done today between medical and Xbox consults. (The hospital has a built in Xbox gaming system. Guess who ends up doing IT support for the daughter and running back and forth to the volunteer library to pick out game titles?)

  • First look: LogMeIn Ignition on iPad

When it comes to remote control apps for Apple devices, LogMeIn seems to be taking the lead. Their namesake application, LogMeIn for Mac, has been available for quite some time in free and paid versions, and the company came out with an iPhone app -- LogMeIn Ignition (US$29.99)-- last year. The company has also announced development of a Hamachi app for the Mac platform. Just before the iPad dropped on Saturday, TUAW received word that the LogMeIn app had been updated to take advantage of the new platform. Current users of LogMeIn Ignition just need to update the app and download it to their iPads for it to work as a native iPad app. LogMeIn Ignition provides a simple way to control one or more remote Macs from an iPad or iPhone. You simply install the LogMeIn software on any Mac or PC you wish to control, and then log into it from LogMeIn Ignition on the mobile device. How does it work? Pretty good. In fact, this entire post was written on an iPad that was controlling the iMac in my office. Controlling the Mac screen is simple. Your finger controls the location of the Mac cursor on the Mac screen. A single tap is a click, a double-tap is a double-click, etc... An unobtrusive tool bar at the top or bottom of the screen provides access to the keyboard and Control, Alt, and Command keys.

LogMeIn, providers of the LogMeIn service for remote control of computers, has opened a public beta of LogMeIn Pro2 for Mac. The company currently provides LogMeIn Free for Mac, as well as LogMeIn Ignition for iPhone [US$29.99, iTunes Link], allowing Mac and iPhone users the ability to securely control remote Macs and PCs from their Apple devices. LogMeIn Pro2 will be similar in functionality to the existing Windows version. Through the service and software, people can connect to a Mac from a Mac or Windows machine, control it, print documents, and share and transfer files. Registration is required in order to download the software and set up a remote session on the service, and the developer would like feedback from beta participants. Several beta releases are expected, and registered users will be notified of code updates. At this time, no pricing is available for the service. The Windows version currently costs US$65 per year, and the Mac beta version is available for free. [via macnn]
