The PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo is in full swing and news is coming thick and fast. The latest news is that Konami has announced an expansion for the PSP title Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. Focused on online play, the game will feature new levels and characters, as well as a new single player "Infinity mode". Not much more information regarding the gameplay has been released, however the price of the expansion will be 2,400 yen on its own, or 4,300 yen in a double pack with the original game. The expansion will be released in Japan on the 20th of September, with no word yet on an American/European release. We're intrigued and cannot wait to have a look at how this expansion works out. Hopefully it'll satisfy our Metal Gear Solid appetites until MGS4 comes out in early '08. If the expansion reaches the English speaking world before then, that is.Check out IGN for some more screenshots.

How's it go? Good things come to those who wait? In April, when Konami releases the European version of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, the wait will be rewarded with new content. Here's a breakdown of the extras (via NeoGAF): New "Boss Battle" mode allows players to unlock additional (unconfirmed) characters for recruitment At least 12 new characters will reportedly be added Existing characters will get expanded careers, which now focus on key attributes Two new multiplayer maps will be added It's possible that a patch could be released to update the Japanese and US versions of Portable Ops; but if not, PSP's region freedom ensures that diehards will be able to enjoy the new content no matter where their locations. Would you buy this game twice?Update: changed "PAL" qualifiers to "European."

Last month I was able to get my man hands on the latest Metal Gear Solid to hit the Sony PSP: Portable Ops. Lumped in with a couple other swanky journos, we were shown a quick overview of how multiplayer would work, then were handed the PSPs ourselves as we battled in a 4-person free-for-all deathmatch. The most important aspect of any PSP game, especially shooters, is controls. They're always a concern, and more times than not, a huge problem -- I blame that stupid nub. Sadly, Portable Ops was not able to leap this tall hurdle for PSP developers. While the gameplay was nicely paced and it was fun to roam and take out my enemies, the controls were just not as solid as they could have been had the PSP been a tad more smartly designed for these kinds of games. The controls work like this: Left Shoulder: brings up weapon; Right Shoulder: first person; Directional Pad Left, Right: strafe; Square: attack, shoot when weapon is equipped, melee when not; X: duck or tumble roll; O: switch weapons; Triangle: stealth; Analog: move around. Even though moving your player around, aiming, and shooting were a bit on the shaky side, the game is a positive step in the right direction for PSP users. The fact that it will take advantage of PSP infrastructure play, makes the game even more of a must-have than just having Metal Gear Solid slapped onto the box. For those interested in more screenshots and some of the features that will be included, check after the break.

Since we didn't get into Konami's keynote this afternoon (they had a little tantrum when we didn't remove a post at their request) we're linking to Gamespot's coverage of the latest installment in the seminal Metal Gear Solid series: Portable Ops for the PSP. What makes Portable Ops special? No card battles, that's what!According to Gamespot, Ops is "even more intriguing than [they] would have expected." Errr, okay. Whatever that means. We will say that it features that same MGS action that console gamers have come to love, packaged in a convenient portable factor. Taking place in 1970, six years after the events of Snake Eater, Ops will detail Naked Snake's fall from grace ... we're talking Big Boss people. Plan on getting some portable sneaking on winter '06. Awesome.
