Some of the most popular dating apps have been accused of playing fast and loose with particularly sensitive data. The Norwegian Consumer Council has published a report accusing Grindr, OKCupid and Tinder of spreading various degrees of information about GPS location, sexuality and other personal information in irresponsible ways. While Grindr has vowed not to share HIV statuses and some sexual gropu identification with ad partners, it transmits user tracking info and the app's name to over a dozen companies, effectively identifying users as LGBT. OKCupid even sent data on drug use, ethnicity and political views to the analytics firm Braze.

Game developers with a love for Unity and social networking just got a little present: Twitter has announced Unity support for its mobile software development toolkit. For most of us, this simply means looking forward to more mobile games with Twitter integration -- but for developers, it's an easy way to add crash reporting, mobile analytics and monetization tools to the development environment. Adding Fabric for games to Unity is apparently as simple as installing a plugin.

Now that Twitter is almost a publicly traded company, it's under pressure to find meaningful new sources of revenue. That may include advertising outside of users' social streams, according to a new report from the Financial Times. Its sources claim that Twitter is developing an ad network for apps and websites that would target visitors based on what users tweet and who they follow. It wouldn't resemble Facebook's login-based advertising, however, as much of Twitter's data is public. The network would reportedly launch soon after the firm completes its recent acquisition of MoPub, a mobile ad exchange. Twitter isn't commenting on the rumor, but such a move is logical -- it would let the company improve its bottom line without intruding any further into our conversations.

  • iOS 6 spike last weekend due to China, not Google Maps

Earlier this week, mobile ad exchange company MoPub released a report showing a 26 percent increase in iOS 6 adoption over the weekend. The company attributed this jump to the launch of Google Maps. According to a TechCrunch report, rival mobile ad company Chitika claims it is China and not Google Maps that is responsible for this spike. Mobile ad company Chitika says its data shows that iOS 6 impressions remained flat during the six days following the launch of Google Maps, which contradicts the report from MoPub. Chitika, though, only measures data in the US and Canada, while MoPub's ad network is global. MoPub includes numbers from China, which launched the iPhone 5 on December 17 and sold 2 million devices during its launch weekend. Chitika claims the spike recorded by MoPub is more likely due to the rollout of the iPhone 5 and other iOS devices over the weekend and not Google Maps.
