  • Gigantic ASUS periodical reveals and specs numerous new laptops

Curious what's inside a new ASUS laptop? Then Notebook Review has the treat for you -- earlier this month, forumite David took the time to download the company's massive 108MB ASUS World Magazine PDF and laid out the spec sheets for not one, not two, but a veritable smörgåsbord of potent portables. There's 36 in all; we've told you about some of them before, to be sure -- but others are getting solid specs for the first time, and there are even a few diamonds in the rough. Enough chit-chat, on with the show! U-series: Otherwise known as ASUS' Bamboo Collection, the U-series laptops were highlighted at CES, where we discovered they would have Core i5 CPUs and USB 3.0 support. Well, that's not the whole story. They've also all got NVIDIA Optimus auto-switching graphics between an onboard Intel GMA HD and the GeForce 310M 1GB. Oh, and forget Core i5 -- these machines support processors all the way up to the 2.66GHz Core i7-620M. Highlight: The U30JC, with a combo Blu-ray drive and a chiclet keyboard that won a iF Product Design Award. UL-series: ASUS for "UnLimited," you can read UL as "ultra low," as in Intel's ultra low voltage (ULV) processors that provide 8+ hours of battery life and let these notebooks stay cool despite being under an inch thin. We saw the UL80JT sport NVIDIA Optimus at CES and got hands-on with the Optimus-equipped UL50VF; now, the UL30JT now has it as well. Highlight: That same UL50VF, with an estimated 12+ hours of battery life. More after the break -- save pricing and availability, unfortunately -- or feel free to hit up the source link to download the entire electronic magazine for yourself. %Gallery-89273%

  • ASUS N82 and N61 join the USB 3.0 laptop party

We're kind of starting to figure out ASUS' naming scheme -- E is for Easy, and N is for eNtertainment, jolly good. In other self-evident news, Engadget Chinese is the place to go if you want the lowdown on happenings in China and its nearby states. Joining HP's Envy 15 in the USB 3.0-sporting ranks will soon be the familiar 16-inch ASUS N61 and the seemingly brand spanking new N82 14-incher. See the galleries below for the eye candy, but keep it here for specs. Core i5 and i7 CPUs will populate the role of orchestrator inside, while ATI and NVIDIA discrete graphics options will also be made available when these make their imminent Taiwan debut. In live demonstrations, the one USB 3.0 port (yes, you only get one) was shown to be three times as fast as USB 2.0, so not quite reaching its theoretical superiority, but hardly an unwelcome improvement. Let's hope for quick global distribution following the Taiwanese launch, which is slated for the middle of this month.%Gallery-84581%%Gallery-84582%

  • Windows 3.1 on S60 dude says 'why stop there,' ups the ante with Win95

    by

    03.05.2009

Hey, look, it's Windows... mobile. Get it? You know, Windows 95 on a mobile device -- ah, never mind. Point is, the S60 port of DOSBox seems to be doing some really crazy, insane, questionably-useful things for Symbian-powered devices around the world, and when running Windows 3.1 on a 320 x 240 display just doesn't do it for you anymore, you can apparently step up to a harder drug like Windows 95. The video shows good ol' 95 getting demoed on an N82, but given the molasses-like pace of absolutely everything, we'd say this is strictly a for-the-hell-of-it sort of experiment. Translation: there are better ways to run your BBS from the road. Follow the break for video. [Thanks, Daniel]

  • Nokia spits out updates for N82 and N78

Nokia's update elves have been hard at work getting improvements out to all kinds lately and today's lucky recipients are the N78 and N82. N78 (v20.149.051.1) gets a new version of Nokia Maps, and some speed boost in the UI department -- which is always appreciated. N82 (v31.0.016) apparently gets has User Data Preservation (which should ensure this update won't wipe out your personal settings) and some other unknowns, though All About Symbian figure it's mostly bug fixes. Update's available via Nokia Software Update, but before you hop-to, follow the various reads and vias for a full breakdown of what's new.[Via Symbian-Guru, here and here]Update: UDP is NOT new in this release as pointed out by Steve Litchfield (All About Symbian) and Will. Many thanks.Read - N82 update detailsRead - N78 update details

  • Nokia Quake III gains on-phone server, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support

Remember when playing Quake III at a decent resolution required a $5,000 Alienware? Man, those were the days. Now, we can't help but be thankful for a few special Nokia handsets (the N95 8GB, E90 and N82 in particular) that can all handle the game by their lonesome. In fact, the latest version of the software adds a few remarkably awesome extras. For starters, users can now take advantage of on-phone server support, meaning that your handset can actually host a Quake III multiplayer battle (and may we recommend the server name "trashaccident?"). Also of note, the devs have tossed in support for Bluetooth mice and keyboards. We know, right? Tap the read link for all the juicy installation instructions.[Via Decoder, thanks Olli]

  • Nokia N82 joins N95, gets boosted to v30

N82 users seem to be among the most diehard fans in the entire Nseries stable, so we'd say they're owed a bone as a token of Nokia's appreciation for spreading the gospel. To that end, Espoo has brought firmware v30's splendors to the N82 hot on the heels of its N95 and N95 8GB debuts, offering a new Flash Lite build, Maps 2.0, speed and stability improvements, and a host of other tweaks. Sadly there's no N-Gage client bundled, but whatever -- it's available as a separate download, so no harm, no foul.[Via All About Symbian]

  • Hands-on at Nokia's CTIA Wireless 2008 outpost

    04.07.2008

We meandered through Nokia's booth at CTIA Wireless last week in search of interesting wares, and came back with pretty positive results. Granted, nothing starting with "N" or "E" was announced at the show -- unless you count the N810 WiMAX Edition, which we don't -- but there was still plenty of unreleased kit at the show, including the N78, the 6210 Navigator, and a pair of really sleek CDMA flips. Speaking of the CDMA flips, the 1606 and 3606 headlined Nokia's CTIA intros -- and we've gotta admit, we were surprisingly pleased with the hardware. The designs are beautiful, smooth, clean, slim, and unlike anything we've seen out of Espoo in the past; they're worthy efforts for a company that pays very little mind to the world of CDMA, and a merciful sign that the painful Pantech partnership era appears to be over. • Nokia N82 gets blacked out for retail

    by

    03.24.2008

Our sights are sort of irreparably set on the N78 and N96 at this point, but let's not forget a killer handset out of Espoo that's already launched, already available at retail, and holds its own in the technical arena: the N82. The 5 megapixel Nseries badass offers a candybar alternative to the N95, thanks to a 5 megapixel autofocus camera that's ready to take the place of your average point-and-shoot -- and the xenon flash actually one-ups the N95's weakling LED unit. We really liked the original pearlescent white when we saw it in the flesh with our very own eyes, but if you simply must have something just a little meaner looking, consider this: black. Yep, the N82's been relaunched in a rather menacing gloss black, and even better, it comes preloaded with the model's latest firmware that offers photo geotagging out of the box thanks to the phone's integrated GPS receiver. Grab it now for €400 (about $618).[Via MobileBurn]

Wait, wait, is that US 3G we see on that N82 there? Nope! Just another color, we're afraid. Nokia's newly darkened N82 has broken cover on its US (ironically) web store ahead of a probably MWC announcement; we liked the white one quite a bit when we spent some quality time with it, but we like choice even more. Order it now for $629, and if the site is to be believed, you'll have it on your doorstep shortly after the 12th of the month.[Via IntoMobile, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Nokia's N82 now in black -- $629 unlocked

After having scooped the world with the first press shots of the N82 in silver, Intomobile brings us the first shots of the N82 in black. Nothing else is new. Then again, with a 5 megapixel camera, xenon flash, Carl Zeiss glass and quad-band GSM with HSDPA data, assisted GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Tuner, 3.5-mm jack, microSD slot, and 2.4-inch auto-rotating display... is there anything you're missing? Oh right, HSDPA on US frequencies would be damn nice if Nokia hopes to grow their domestic presence. $629 is the unlocked cost, but hey, shipping is free. [Via Intomobile]

  • Nokia mentions N82 8GB, US N95 8GB: typo or totally inevitable?

    by
    Chris Ziegler

    12.23.2007

If you recall, the North American version of the N95 was basically willed into existence by folks who boldly ignored the lack of support for their native 3G bands and bought the original anyway; Nokia was pleased with the unexpected cash flow, woke up, and cobbled together what we now know as the N95-3. So is history going to repeat itself with the N95 8GB? The Nokia Guide discovered a mention of an "N95 8GB NAM" in the compatible phones list for Nokia's Download! app, and while there's been no official announcement of such a device in the pipe, it makes total sense that they'd scheme to swap out the eight gigger's radio the same way they did before. Also mentioned is an "N82 8GB," another nonexistent handset that we'd be less than shocked to see happen since the N82 is undeniably one of Nokia's flagship handsets and is now flanked by 8GB versions of its N81 and N95 cousins. Only question left is, who's planning on holding on that N82 or N95-3 purchase now until this all plays out?[Via Boy Genius Report]

    12.18.2007

Nokia fans underwhelmed by the N81 have been given one more shot at true love in the form of the N82 candybar. From the model numbers and quick glance, you might think that the N81 and N82 are actually just the same phone in different form factors, but it turns out that's pretty far from the truth -- besides a camera upgraded from 2 megapixels to 5, the N82 features GPS and a physical design just a little more befitting its price tag and position at the top of Nokia's range.%Gallery-11869%

The Nokia N82's been official for all of 24 hours, so obviously someone's already unboxed it -- and we've got to say, we're going start pronouncing "Symbian" like the dude in this video. Check it after the break -- and make sure you're ready to get down, because that soundtrack is hot.

    11.14.2007

Right on schedule, Nokia has announced its latest addition to the multimedia-centric (and game-riffic) Nseries line, the N82 candybar. The phone clearly bears a striking resemblance to its recently announced cousin -- the N81 slider -- but the N82 ups the ante with a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens paired with autofocus (naturally) and a xenon flash. Other features include microSD expansion, support for Nokia's own Ovi goodies, WiFi, assisted GPS, a 2.4 inch QVGA display front and center, and an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack like the N95 before it. The GSM / EDGE radio does the quadband thing, but HSDPA's available only on the 2100MHz band -- so North Americans with an appetite for data need not apply. Others can buy the N82 starting today for about €450 ($657).

Straight from the source and about 21 hours early, we've got the 5 megapixel Nokia N82 press shots. No detailed press release but really, what more do you need to know that you don't know already? Ah hell, we'll run down the rumored specs for you one more time: quad-band GSM, 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, FM Tuner, Bluetooth, 3.5-mm headphone jack, Carl Zeiss lens with Xenon flash, automatic rotating 2.4-inch QVGA display, and microSD expansion. What we don't know is the price and availability, but we'll get that tomorrow.%Gallery-10202%[Via Intomobile, thanks Stefan C.]

Alright, there's not much to look at here, but we get the idea. Curtains, a countdown timer, "Nokia Nseries" logo at the top -- can only mean one thing, right? We're less than three days away from some sort of announcement from Nokia's smartphone group here, and with the groundswell of N82 buzz the past few days, we'd say the odds of an official N82 launch going down here lie somewhere between "high" and "very high." Stay tuned, folks.[Via Slashphone]

In the midst of all this Gphone hysteria, we won't fault you for forgetting about a Nokia candybar first noticed way back in May, but pictured above is the first (confirmed, at least) in the wild shot of the firm's 5MP-packin' N82. You heard right -- this handset sports a five-megapixel camera (complete with Carl Zeiss lens and a Xenon flash), WiFi, Bluetooth, integrated GPS, 3G connectivity, Nokia Music Store access and automatic screen rotation. Regrettably, there's still no word on a price / release date, but click on through for a couple more angles, and check out what the built-in camera can do in the read link.[Thanks, pdexter]

There it is, the first spy shot of Nokia's N82. Don't remember this Espoo candybar? No worries, the last update was way back in May when news was first leaked. Back then, the N82 was rumored to pack quad-band GSM, 2100MHz HSDPA, a 2.4-inch 240x320 display, WiFi, GPS, FM Tuner and biggie 5 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens. So until we hear otherwise, that's what we'll assume until the supposed announcement on November 2nd. Right, that's just 1 week from today. [Via Unwired View]

  • Nokia N81 and N82 come to light

    05.10.2007

Symbian-Guru has the scoop on not one, but two unannounced new high-end Nokia handsets, the N81 (pictured on the left) and the N82 (pictured on the right). The slider-style N81 looks it'll be the successor to their N91 musicphone (except less, uh, busted-looking) and sport a full 8GB of memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, quad-band EDGE and 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The N82 has a more traditional candybar form-factor and'll have a five megapixel camera with Xenon flash and auto-focus Carl Zeiss lens, quad-band GSM (doesn't say whether it'll be GRPS or EDGE, but we're guessing EDGE), 2100MHz HSDPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, integrated GPS, FM tuner, and a microSD memory card slot. Doesn't sound like either will be out until Q4 of this year.[Via Ring Nokia]
