  • Gran Turismo 7 next year in 'best-case scenario,' developers say

Gran Turismo 6 won't hit retail until December 6, but the developers at Polyphony Digital are already planning Gran Turismo 7 – and they don't want it to take forever. "We don't want to take too long on Gran Turismo 7," series creator Kazunori Yamauchi told Top Gear. "Best-case scenario? Next year. In GT6 we really had to tune the software 100 per cent to maximise the PS3's architecture, but of course the PS4's hardware is much better, so I think the overall quality of the game across the board will be boosted when you come to play it." Releasing Gran Turismo 7 a year after its predecessor would be an impressive feat for Polyphony. We waited for three years between Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo 6, while the delay between Gran Turismo 4 and its sequel was nearly six years long.

  • Gran Turismo 6 lands a moon buggy, otherwise Earthly car list revealed

Of the 1197 vehicles confirmed for Gran Turismo 6, one certainly stands out. That said, the Lunar Roving Vehicle LRV-001 would stand out just about anywhere except the moon. The iconic Apollo 15 buggy is the most surprising inclusion in Polyphony Digital's sim, and the most befuddling. After all, it's unclear if you'll drive it on the Moon, or Earth, or maybe both. A new trailer certainly hints at the possibility of some lunar lapping, at least. As for the other 1196 cars, which suddenly seem humdrum in comparison, you can check them out on the Gran Turismo 6 website. And maybe we'll see you on the dark side of the moon in a month's time, when the PS3 game lands on December 6.

  • Gran Turismo 6 getting 'fairly large' day-one patch

When Gran Turismo 6 launches on December 6, it will come with a sizable patch. The day-one patch will primarily address a few issues with the game's online features, Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi told Eurogamer, adding that the developer is "still overflowing with stuff we'd like to do. So I think the day one patch will be a fairly large patch." Yamauchi noted the patch isn't out of the ordinary for the developer, as Gran Turismo 5 was updated shortly after the game's launch. "It's the same every time. Everything's very tight. It's an incredibly tight schedule," Yamauchi said. "As to being able to include everything we want to on day one, we probably won't be able to. I think for the 12 months following the release we'll continue to update the software. Because in Gran Turismo 6 we're preparing a lot of different things we haven't even touched on yet."

Sony has announced a documentary film based on the Gran Turismo racing series. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi showed off the first trailer for the documentary at the Jalopnik Film Festival held in the Classic Car Club Manhattan in New York. Directed by Tamir Moscovici, the film revolves around Yamauchi's journey to "push beyond the virtual divide in his pursuit of perfection." Sony did not specify when the full film will air, though it wouldn't surprise us if it were closer to Gran Turismo 6's release on PS3, December 6. It also wouldn't surprise us if it were delayed like the game often was.

  • Yoshida: Gran Turismo 6 would be 'hard to move' to Vita

Revving up Gran Turismo 6's engines on the Vita would be "really hard" on a technical level, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida told IGN last week. "As you can tell looking at GT6, it really is using PS3 to a very high level," Yoshida said. "In terms of Vita support, I don't expect the whole game to be able to run on PS Vita." Yoshida's statement follows Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi's comments concerning the possibility of GT6 evolving into Gran Turismo 7 for the PS4 during its development cycle. GT6 will be tuned to race on December 6 for the PS3. In the meantime, fans can race to GameStop or Amazon for pre-order bonuses in the form of exclusive cars and in-game credits.

  • Gran Turismo 6 could evolve into GT7 on PS4, says Yamauchi

By the time a PlayStation 4 version of Gran Turismo 6 is developed, it could evolve into Gran Turismo 7. That's according to Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi, who at a Gamescom panel reiterated that his studio has a PS4 version of its PS3 game in mind, but said that it could take some time to arrive. There's a distinct possibility it would be called Gran Turismo 7 by then, Yamauchi said, adding that he doesn't know if the "vision" of Gran Turismo 6 would carry over to this hypothetical GT7. That's a lot of hypotheticals flying about, but bear in mind we're in a limbo where Gran Turismo 6 on PS4 has been everything but confirmed. The news follows Polyphony Digital stamping a date on GT6's license, granting it access to PS3s on December 6. GT6 will feature concept cars designed exclusively for the game by a number of high-profile manufacturing houses like Aston Martin, BMW, Honda, and Nissan. Polyphony Digital revealed 18 partners for the so-dubbed Vision Gran Turismo project, which will see the free concept come to the game across a year of online updates. Gamescom provided another piece of Gran Turismo news, this time related to the now doubly confirmed movie. Speaking to Destructoid, Yamauchi said the film follows the life story of Lucas Ordonez, a Gran Turismo player who, through GT Academy, went on to race professionally. Ordonez now races for Nissan in the FIA GT Series. If you were wondering how to script a plot for a Gran Turismo movie, you have your answer.

Gran Turismo 6 will launch on December 6, 2013, Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan announced during Sony's Gamescom press briefing. The game is exclusive to PS3, and will feature concept cars not seen in the series before, least of all on roads in real life. Update: Sony also provided new information on pre-order bonuses for the game. By pre-ordering Gran Turismo 6, players will automatically receive the same car pack that was originally announced in June, except now with a SRT Viper GTS and Audi R8 LMS instead of the BMW Z4 GT3. Additionally, the GameStop pre-order bonus now includes 25 cars instead of the 20 originally announced.

1.3 million worldwide racers took on the challenge of the Gran Turismo 6 demo, or at least downloaded it. The demo also served as the qualifying process for the 2013 GT Academy competition; a small selection of the victorious speedsters progressed to the next stage of the process, where they'll fight to win the eventual grand prize of a spot on Nissan's real-life racing team. The rest of us must make do with the virtual prospect that is the game proper, due on PS3 this holiday. The demo remains open until the end of August to those who downloaded it.

Sony confirmed a Gran Turismo movie is indeed in development. When approached about reports, a Sony Computer Entertainment UK spokesperson told Joystiq the Gran Turismo film is "being made," adding the company doesn't have any further comment. Yesterday, The Wrap reported it had learned a Gran Turismo movie was in development, with The Social Network and Fifty Shades of Grey producers Michael de Luca and Dana Brunetti on board, and Sony Pictures executives Elizabeth Cantillon, Devon Franklin, and Hannah Minghella in charge. Those scant details remain unconfirmed. With little to go on currently, we'll refer you to Dreamworks' Need for Speed movie for a point of comparison. Imagine that, but maybe with less crashes and more jazz.

Sony has reportedly given the green light to a big screen version of Gran Turismo, just as we'd gotten used to the idea of a Need for Speed movie. Holly-blog The Wrap said it learned the film is in development, with The Social Network producers Michael de Luca and Dana Brunetti behind the wheel. Brunetti and de Luca recently teamed up on the upcoming film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey - there's a livery gag in there somewhere, but we're too stunned to make it. In any case, we've reached out to Sony for comment. As The Wrap notes, Gran Turismo is Sony's best-selling game franchise, so from that standpoint it's clearly lucrative. We're just unsure what the brand lends to the big screen beyond a name and the theme of very shiny cars, but maybe that's enough. Not forgetting, of course, Gran Turismo 6 is heading onto PS3s worldwide this holiday season.

Vrooooooooom! Vroooooooooooooooooom! Rrrrrrrrrhhhhhh! That's just some of the noises you can make as you while away the hours waiting for the Gran Turismo 6 demo, which is due on the PlayStation Store later today. Sony pins the demo's arrival for 8PM ET (5PM PT). The demo includes a tutorial, four warm-up races, and various time-trial snapshots of UK track Silverstone. As detailed previously, the demo also serves as the qualifying method for the GT Academy 2013 competition, based on times for a full lap of the circuit. The watch stops for GT Academy qualification on July 28.

A playable Gran Turismo 6 demo is coming to PSN on July 2, SCE America revealed this week. When Polyphony Digital's shiny new racer was unveiled finally last month, Sony promised a demo was due in July. Sure enough, the demo is coming and right at the start of next month too, which should go some way to allaying fears the racer's 'holiday 2013' release window is too soon to be true. The demo is also the qualifying method for GT Academy 2013, the competition intended to unearth real driving talent by providing winners with a spot on Nissan's racing team. Qualifications end on July 28, but the demo remains freely available to all afterwards. The demo itself features beginner stages themed around a GT Academy boot camp, with racers who make the grade going on to the final qualifier at the UK's Silverstone track. In terms of cars, SCEA said the demo features the Nissan Leaf, 370Z, and GT-R at the least.

  • Sony confident Gran Turismo 6 won't be delayed

Sony is confident that Gran Turismo 6 will launch on the PS3 this year as planned, Sony Product Manager Josh Walker told MCV, on the record and clear as day. "There is no reason to think the proposed release window for GT6 will not be achieved," Walker said. Gran Turismo 5 suffered a slew of delays that bled into its DLC, too – with that history, we remain cautiously optimistic that Gran Turismo 6 will launch this holiday, with a demo in July, as promised. Gran Turismo 6 is headed to the PS3 and not the PS4, which is also scheduled to hit shelves this holiday. Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan said the current-gen launch is designed to take advantage of the PS3's install base of 70 million units.

  • Sony explains why Gran Turismo 6 is launching on PS3, not PS4

    05.24.2013

The biggest eyebrow-raiser with last week's Gran Turismo 6 reveal was that it's launching on the PS3, and not the PS4. Doesn't Sony want to drive PS4 launch sales with one of its biggest franchises? In an interview on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan explained why the latest Gran Turismo isn't debuting on the soon-to-be latest PlayStation, arguing that GT6 can still deliver a significant difference from GT5, despite being on the same platform. "You had GT1 and GT2 on PS one," Ryan said, "GT3 and GT4 on PS2, then there's GT5 on PS3 and a space next to it. The difference between Gran Turismo and GT2 is unbelievable, but they're both on the same platform. The difference between GT3 and GT4 is huge. We're absolutely confident when GT6 comes, you'll see a big step change up from GT5 too. There's still a lot of potential on PS3 that a developer like Polyphony can really exploit." The other, obvious factor is the install base. Gran Turismo has traditionally been a big seller, with three entries shifting over 10 million units. To do that, Ryan indicates, you need to have the install base. "And the other factor is that on PS3 we have an install base of 70 million units," Ryan added. "On PS4 on launch day we'll have an install base of zero units. There'll be plenty of games to help drive PS4 – not least Driveclub in the racing genre from Evolution Studios, a studio with a fantastic pedigree." A PS4 version of GT6 looks more than likely at some point down the line, and it's something that hasn't been shied away from. Speaking to IGN, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said, "We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on PS3 for now."

After details leaked out of Europe this morning, Sony has officially announced Gran Turismo 6 for PS3 this holiday. "I'd like to announce today that we are developing GT6 for the holiday season this year on the PlayStation 3," said Polyphony Digital and creator of Gran Turismo Kazunori Yamauchi moments ago. "10 million copies of [Gran Turismo 5] have been sold," according to the Toyota Europe communications team, which did a better job of tweeting the reveal at the Silverstone Circuit in the UK than Sony Europe. "Gran Turismo is most successful [PlayStation] franchise ever - over 70 million copies sold to date, almost 50 percent in Europe" Update: We now have a trailer, along with some further details. First and foremost, Sony says a demo of Gran Turismo 6 is scheduled for July. This'll be what kicks off GT Academy 2013, for those of you interested in that. The new iteration launches with 1200 cars, 33 locations, and 71 layouts. That's seven new locations in addition to those in Gran Turismo 5, and one of the new ones is the UK's Silverstone circuit, where today's event took place. Polyphony Digital's developed a new game engine for GT6, which Sony says "pushes the limits of the PS3," and a new physics engine, which includes new modeling for suspension, tyres, kinematics, and aerodynamics. Sony says we'll see more of GT6 at this year's E3 and gamescom conferences.

The Sony-managed website gran-turismo.com now features a product listing for the as-of-yet unannounced Gran Turismo 6. Currently, the link in question leads to its own unique (if empty) page; further URL manipulation produces generic results. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is expected to announce the next entry in Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo series next week during an anniversary event held at Silverstone Circuit in the UK. While specifics regarding the next Gran Turismo title are not yet known, Sony notes that designer Kazunori Yamauchi will be present at the event on May 15 to discuss the future of the series, and promises that "something big" will be revealed. Today, May 8, marks the 15th anniversary of the European release of the original PlayStation Gran Turismo title. Given the timing of the event -- and considering Gran Turismo 5's extended development period -- it's likely that the next entry in Polyphony Digital's driving simulation series will be announced for the PlayStation 4, though no details have been confirmed.
