Hot on the heels of 2009's Second Skin, MMO players are once again the subject of an in-depth documentary about their lives and playing styles as Gamebreaker.TV is hosting the world premiere of The Raid for all to enjoy. Directed by gamer Kevin Johnson, The Raid follows a guild of World of Warcraft players who tackle some of the toughest challenges of the game and open up about what being a raider means to them. The 20-minute runtime examines what drives players to the raiding scene and introduces outsiders to the collaboration and competition that goes on during these events. The primary focus, however, is on the social aspect of raiding and how it binds a group of people together for a single purpose. You can catch the documentary after the jump until Wednesday evening at 10 p.m. EDT. Please note that the film starts around the 26-minute mark if you don't want to sit through the pre-show interviews. Give it a watch and let us know what you think -- did The Raid hit the spot or miss its target?

Syp of the BioBreak blog drove five-and-a-half hours to Indianapolis to experience GenCon Indy 2009 for a day and he surely didn't waste any time chatting with a few of the biggest MMO developers out there. He managed to get some one-on-one time with Robert Mull and Andy Belford of Mythic, Chris Priestly of BioWare, and Jack Emmert of Cryptic.Andy discussed Mythic's revised approach to Warhammer Online's development, some misconceptions about server performance, and his role in the Second Skin MMO documentary amongst other things. Chris was unable to talk about Star Wars: The Old Republic specifically as he was there to pitch Dragon Age: Origins, however, there is a little tidbit about ehancements they're making to their morality system, which fans will be sure to speculate upon. Finally, Jack seems confident that Champions Online hype will drastically escalate via word of mouth once the NDA drops.Check out Syp's trip to Indy part one and part two. It's full of interesting information about the convention and boasts numerous photos of himself, some devs, and the growd in general. He notes a bit of disappointment that neither Blizzard nor Turbine were in attendance, otherwise, he'd surely have assaulted them with questions too.

  • Watch gaming doc 'Second Skin' now, free

We've teased you with Second Skin before, but now you can watch the whole thing online for free. Word of warning: If you're a World of Warcraft player, or belong to any other obsessive MMO, the film doesn't paint a very flattering picture. But having said that, it does treat the subject matter with some respect by showing all facets: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Juan Carlos Piñeiro Escoriaza and Victor Piñeiro have put together a surprisingly good documentary that pulls back the cover on the other side of the screen. Until now, you couldn't see this work outside the film festival circuit, but thanks to Hulu, you can watch the entire movie after the break. Grab your popcorn and head on in!Additionally, Second Skin will be released on DVD on August 25.[Via Film School Rejects]

  • MMO documentary "Second Skin" debuts in theaters today

It's not often that we talk about movies here on Massively, but the new(ish) documentary entitled Second Skin is definitely right up our alley. Today marks the debut of Second Skin in select theaters across the United States, as well as a free showing of the film at various websites. Is the movie worth seeing if you're heavily into MMOs? Well, we try not to do reviews here (MMO reviews at least), but I would say it's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy MMOs even a tiny bit. The film showcases the lives of several MMO gamers (mostly WoW and EverQuest) to show how these games have affected their lives. There's a fairly good balance of good and bad, showing everything from the marriage of people who met in these games to a tragic suicide that was blamed on an MMO. Check it out all this week online at Fancast or SnagFilms, or at participating theaters across America.

Sure, we've got Second Skin coming up, but if you can't wait that long, here's a well-produced, nicely narrated audio documentary about the mechanisms of MMO relationships. It was created by a student from Central Michigan University's School of Broadcast & Cinematic Arts named Nathan Bender. For a change, this documentary focuses on Final Fantasy XI, rather than World of Warcraft. It provides a great deal of insight into how players interact with each other, and an insider's perspective on what it's like to enter a larger social world than previously experienced. Running under 30 minutes, it's well worth your time and may have you nodding in recognition.[Thanks, Fusionx!]

We're getting mixed signals from this new trailer from the upcoming film about MMOs, Second Skin. On the one hand, it seems like an exaltation of the incredible phenomenon of virtual communities, but we're also getting the vibe that we may be asked to feel sympathy for MMO addicts, something we're not inclined to do. If the film manages to walk that line successfully though, it may just be required viewing. The team behind it has its fingers crossed for a SXSW showing, which could lead to theatrical or cable distribution, so hopefully we'll be able to judge it in full soon. You can learn more about the film, as well as see a higher-quality version of the trailer, on the official site.

Here at Massively, we've been anxiously awaiting for Second Skin. One of my personal friends, Nexeus Fatale, was a subject in this documentary about MMOs and I've been hearing about it for at least a year. The wait finally appears to be over as they are hoping to premiere it at SXSW in March. However, Pure West released a trailer today to whet our appetite! The trailer itself mainly focuses on World of Warcraft players as they fall in love, develop gaming addictions, and as they work together in guilds. However, I did spot two scenes with Nexeus and a short blurb from Tony Walsh, of Clickable Culture. They represent the Second Life aspect of the film, which was sadly neglected in the trailer. If you enjoyed the preview, you can check out the hi-res versions on their site.

Whether or not you're into documentaries, (for the record, we think they can be very interesting) if you've played massively multiplayer online games in any form then Second Skin by Pure West Documentaries is a movie you'll want to check out at some point. The trailer is going to be debuting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 29th 2008 according to Victor Pineiro; the writer and producer of the film. The movie itself says it will cover guilds, virtual couples, virtual world addiction, gold farming, virtual identities, disabled massively gaming, guild leadership, cybersex and consult some experts from the industry itself. That's a lot of subjects to cover in one movie, but then again when your movie looks closely at how these worlds affect the lives of the people that play them -- well, then there is a lot to talk about. Don't forget to check back tomorrow for the world debut of Second Skin's trailer.

  • Documentary shows our Second Skin

Ten Ton Hammer has posted part 1 of their great Q&A with the folks at Pure West Documentaries, the company behind Second Skin. What is Second Skin? A documentary film about us... the players of the very subject matter you come to Massively to read about. It's a film that tells the tale of real-life players - your co-workers, your wife, boss, or even the girl next door - living within the virtual worlds of MMOs as someone - or some thing - else. The interview asks a lot of very interesting questions and is absolutely worth the time to read. The film has been in the making for two years and was just recently finished. It's due to make it's debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2008. This is not a shockumentary or a slam film. The guys at Pure West are, like us, gamers who set out to put together a film that walks the tight rope between showing both the negative (of which we hear about all too often) and positive (which we hardly ever hear about) sides of this growing phenomena.Peter Schieffelin Brauer, producer of the film says: Certainly we hear a lot about the negative aspects. But I think one thing we found was really important was to really give both sides a voice. Of course, I'm a gamer, I care about the gamer's voice a lot more, but if I don't come out and acknowledge the other side, no one's going to listen to me.This statement in and of itself speaks to the legitimacy of the filmmakers. I know I'll be buying a ticket when this film hits my local metroplex.
