Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist, showcasing gameplay from its co-op narrative campaign and some gruff banter between Sam Fisher and his partner-in-stealth Isaac Briggs. Splinter Cell is beefing up its multiplayer offerings for the latest series entry, as Blacklist will feature both a two-player co-op campaign and the returning Spies vs. Mercs multiplayer mode. We had a chat with Blacklist's lead co-op designer Richard Carrillo earlier this month, in which he confirmed that teammates will need to adapt to multiple playstyles in order to survive. Blacklist's co-op element spans four mission types and 14 maps, and is playable online and in local split-screen. Splinter Cell: Blacklist is set to launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC platforms on August 20.

Despite being the boss of his own intelligence team, Fourth Echelon, Sam Fisher is still keen to go it alone on most missions in Splinter Cell: Blacklist. For those special outings, he'll need a partner. Splinter Cell: Blacklist's co-op consists of narrative missions, pulled directly from Sam's subordinates on board the Paladin – a massive plane and base of operations for Fourth Echelon in Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Missions will run the gamut from stealthy to more action-focused affairs and in-between, forcing coordination and cooperation in order to reach the next objective. Or, in my case, simply survive.%Gallery-187601%

  • Spies vs. Mercs evolved in Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Splinter Cell: Blacklist's Spies vs Mercs mode offers a sense of claustrophobic fear that few multiplayer games have been able to offer. It's an asymmetrical assault mode where one team of heavily-armed mercenaries attempts to defend three terminals from nimble spies attempting to hack in and steal the ones and zeros within. No matter which side you're on, when one terminal is being hacked, all of the conflict and chaos is focused like a laser to one room where the mercenaries must hunt for the original hacker to stop the countdown. You can't leave that room until the job is done – either the terminal is hacked or the hacker has been dealt with. It's about the most tense 90 seconds I've been asked to endure in a video game.%Gallery-187601%

  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist resurrects Spies vs. Mercs multiplayer

The iconic asymmetrical multiplayer mode Spies vs. Mercs will return to the Splinter Cell series in Splinter Cell: Blacklist. From the announcement trailer, we can surmise that spies are still dead-set on hacking those terminals, while the mercenaries still have an insatiable bloodlust for sneaky dudes wearing tights. Light and shadow seem to remain prominent tools in Splinter Cell: Blacklist's Spies vs. Mercs mode. The mercenary flashlight and motion tracker are both featured, and there's one sequence where we even see a mercenary employ an explodable drone to take out a spy lurking in the dark. Another sequence shows four spies decloaking, so presumably both sides have some new abilities in Splinter Cell: Blacklist's take on Spies vs. Mercs and the mode is no longer limited to two-on-two.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist on Wii U turns the WiiPad into Sam Fisher's OpSat: Operational Satellite Uplink. It's a means of switching gadgets, controlling drones, using spy cams and rifling through Sam's inventory. Unfortunately, there's no option to make Sam talk out his problems.

Wii U (and other platform) pre-orders for Splinter Cell: Blacklist are alive and kicking on Amazon and Gamestop, along with some fresh information about those "enhanced gameplay features" Nintendo promised earlier this month. The WiiPad will display Sam Fisher's OpSat, "allowing the player to operate gadgets such as tri-rotor drones, sticky cam and much more through touch- and motion-based inputs," the Wii U descriptions read. The WiiPad lets players mark and execute enemies, switch weapons and pick gadgets, and displays worldwide stats and friends' progress reports. The Wii U is not a part of the Collector's Edition package available for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.Splinter Cell: Blacklist comes out on August 20 for all platforms.

An Amazon France listing adds further weight to the likelihood of Splinter Cell: Blacklist coming to the Wii U. While the page itself is somewhat speculative - the game is titled 'Splinter Cell 6' - the blurb matches up with the retailer's listings for other platforms. The outwardly blacklisted Wii U version was spotted on two Ubisoft employees' LinkedIn profiles earlier this year. While the purported Wii U version strains to stay stealthy, Ubisoft is definitely bringing Splinter Cell: Blacklist to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on August 20.

Right off the bat, we'll tell you that none of the Splinter Cell: Blacklist limited editions announced for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa come with a plane. What you lose in radio-controlled miniature vehicles, you gain in choice, as there are four different special editions. The 5th Freedom Edition is exclusive to GAME in the UK and GameStop in Ireland, and comes with a Sam Fisher figurine, Splinter Cell Echoes graphic novel, two co-op maps, and some in-game gear, all in a steelbook case (well, except for the in-game items that exist only in a digital state). The 5th Freedom Silver Edition, exclusive to Uplay, is like the other 5th Freedom, but with a fancier steelbook and a silver Sam Fisher. The Ultimatum Edition comes with a digital watch, a shorter selection of Splinter Cell Echoes, and a bit less unlockable gear, along with a really silly name. Finally, the Upper Echelon Day 1 Edition comes with a bunch of digital stuff: the maps, some gold goggles, the "legendary Upper Echelon Suit," and more. It's exclusive to GAME in the UK and Xtravision in Ireland.%Gallery-181340%

It seems that Ubisoft is preparing a Splinter Cell: Blacklist port for Wii U. So said the resume of level designer Pascal Allancon, who may have prematurely outed the Wii U version in his LinkedIn profile. The profile has since been edited, but we've embedded an image of the original (via GoNintendo) for posterity's sake. The only platforms confirmed for Splinter Cell: Blacklist so far are Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, all being prepped for the game's launch in the US on August 20. We've reached out to Ubisoft for comment – let's just hope they don't send their response back by plane, because that would take forever.Update: As spotted by reader Tyler, another Ubisoft LinkedIn profile, this time from game tester Robin Dhar, suggests a Wii U version of Splinter Cell: Blacklist is on the way. The information has since been deleted, but we have a screengrab after the break.

In Splinter Cell: Blacklist, a decidedly less gravelly-voiced Sam Fisher heads up new government outfit Fourth Echelon, an anti-terrorism task force out to prevent the titular blacklist – an escalating list of threats suddenly levied at the United States by a terrorist group calling themselves The Engineers.Sam and his team (including series regular Anna 'Grim' Grímsdóttir) operate high above the clouds within a massive transport plane, a literal and narrative vehicle that can whisk Sam & Co. away to foreign locales at a moment's notice. Despite being the boss, Sam foregoes the corner office in favor of continuing his hands-on approach to combatting threats to national security in his latest covert op, the first from developer Ubisoft Toronto.%Gallery-177656%

  • Torture scene removed from Splinter Cell: Blacklist, no one 'loved' it

The E3 2012 demo for Splinter Cell: Blacklist introduced a savage, player-controlled torture scene, asking players to press and hold a button to twist a knife into an enemy's throat, hoping he spills some information. That torture scene will not be in the final version of Blacklist, following negative response from early players."Definitely we are not going to see when the game's coming out that there are torture scenes in it," Blacklist producer Andrew Wilson said. "That scene is not there any more. I've not really heard anyone say they loved it."Wilson said the scene may have been missing context, making it seem like "tough material.""We've scaled a lot of that back, and as we've gone through the process of development there are always things that you feel are not working as well," he said. "Every game does this, and cuts certain things." Just not throats, apparently.

The arms race taking place between publishers of military action games continues to heat up. Ubisoft is one-upping the Call of Duty: Black Ops spy car by including a working radio-controlled plane with a special edition of Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The $170 "Paladin Multi-Mission Aircraft Edition" includes a radio-controlled Paladin airplane, just like the one Tiny Sam Fisher uses as his base in-game (or, if you prefer, a scale model of Regular Size Sam Fisher's plane). The bundle also includes two co-op maps, in-game items, and a Splinter Cell Echoes graphic novel. See footage of the new content, and that plane, on IGN.

Ignore the fact that Fisher has a silencer on his pistol, that'll just complicate this conversation. Ghosting seems quieter.
