I'm praying to Grenth -- not just because he's lord of the dead and my human Necromancer's supreme master but because being in Sparkfly Fen during a Tequatl-stomping session has been threatening to down my usually robust computer and I'm hoping Grenth will take mercy on it. That, or I could just upgrade it. Every little bit helps, though. I've spent most of this past week finishing up the move to a new apartment, but I've still made time to throw myself at Guild Wars 2's buffed-up Tequatl the Sunless fight. I was pleasantly surprised by the encounter and the community's reception of it, and it's definitely given me hope that ArenaNet will be able to add more complex and fun fights of this kind to GW2's open world in the future. Tequatl is like the star of a teen movie, turning every head at the prom after a radical makeover. I know you needed that mental image. You're welcome.

It's official: The Blackgate server is the first to down redesigned Guild Wars 2 world boss, Tequatl. Less than 24 hours after the Tequatl Rising patch went live, players from across Blackgate rallied to the cause and managed to down the beast after several failed attempts. The kill was confirmed by ArenaNet on the Guild Wars 2 Facebook page. Our own Richie Procopio was present for the killshot; check out his video of the encounter after the break.

  • Flameseeker Chronicles: Ain't no party like a Guild Wars 2 party 'cause a GW2 party don't stop

There's something in the water, and it's rising. Word travels along the shore of Sparkfly Fen in terrified whispers, and the names of the beast that stalks the Splintered Coast are on every tongue: Tequila the Sunrise. Taco the Soft Shell. Loot Piñata. At the very least, poor Tequatl the Sunless will hopefully be shedding the last nickname with the upcoming Tequatl Rising content patch for Guild Wars 2. That one's kind of mean; the others are just affectionate. You know, as affectionate as we can be toward an undead servant of Zhaitan bent on subjugating all life. ArenaNet previewed the new and improved Tequatl fight mechanics at PAX Prime, but apart from that (and the new LFG tool and the new World vs. World mechanics), this latest GW2 release seems a little bit...quiet. I'm OK with that. In fact, it may be exactly what we need.

  • Guild Wars 2's Tequatl Rising is live today

Any players planning on a journey in Tyria today had better watch their step; Tequatl the Sunless is back and is none too happy. Undead dragons have never been known for taking defeat well, and this one has evolved and returned to devour and destroy all who cross its path as Guild Wars 2's latest chapter of living world content, Tequatl Rising, goes live. This new update offers players a new group-combat experience as they band together to try and defeat this threat again. Victory, however, is far from assured, and failure is a very real option. So to help increase your odds, devs offer the following combat walk-through video from PAX Prime that might just have enough hints to help you hone your tactics. You can also join the devs for a livestream on Friday the 20th at 3:00 p.m. EDT on the official GW2 Twitch channel. [Source: ArenaNet press release]

Game design lead Jonathan Sharp took to the Guild Wars 2 official forums yesterday to offer players a "high level" look at ArenaNet's plans for profession balance and improvements. Although the changes won't be going into effect until the October 15th release -- and Sharp cautions that some of them might not make it in that early -- ArenaNet wants to provide fans with a chance to see where each profession is headed and to offer feedback. Several nifty quality of life improvements are also in the works, such as updated trait tooltips and more options for fast cast ground targeting. In another forum post, lead content designer Mike Zadorojny gave fans an update on GW2's highly anticipated looking-for-group tool. To ensure quality and stability, a beta version of the tool will be released with next week's Tequatl Rising content patch and will initially be available to a limited number of players. As the week goes on, greater numbers of players will have access to the tool. [Thank you to Siphaed for the tip!]

  • A dragon rises in Guild Wars 2's next update

It does no good to leave a dragon out of your estimation, alive or dead. Yes, Tequatl the Sunless is dead and vanquished, but the undead lieutenant of Zhaitan was dead the first time you faced him in Guild Wars 2. So it should be unsurprising that the undead dragon can come back for another round. But he's not just coming out with the same old swings. He's faster, stronger, and deadlier, and it remains to be seen if he can be beaten this time around. The next update doesn't just feature an ambulatory dragon corpse with new tricks, though. It also features the long-awaited Looking for Group tool so that players can quickly assemble a full dungeon team without standing around shouting. All of the game's bosses have received a design pass to make them better and more enjoyable in play, and WvW players will enjoy a new power and new ruins. But the video preview is all about Tequatl. When you title an update Tequatl Rising, you put your star front and center. [Source: ArenaNet press release]
