  • Resogun saves the last humans on PS3, Vita this month

    Carousel-scrolling shooter Resogun will reach PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on Tuesday, December 23 in North America. The game will launch nearly a week earlier in Europe on Wednesday, December 17. Resogun first arrived as a launch title for Sony's latest home console, PlayStation 4, in November 2013. While originally developed by Housemarque, the PS3 and Vita ports are courtesy of Climax Studios, the developer behind the PS4 and Vita version of Housemarque's Dead Nation. PlayStation Blog notes that the PS3 and Vita versions of Resogun run at 30 frames per second as opposed to the 60 fps seen in the current-gen version of the game. The game will be Cross-Save and Cross-Buy compatible, so those that own the PS4 version will be able to download it on the other two systems for free instead of ponying up $14.99. Resogun on Vita will feature ad-hoc cooperative multiplayer and the ability to customize controls in order to use the system's touch panel options. [Image: SCEE]

  • Space shooters Ultratron, Titan Attacks flying to new platforms

    Curve Digital will publish two of Puppy Games' arcade-style space shooters on new platforms: Ultratron and Titan Attacks. Ultratron will reach PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Wii U and Vita early next year, and features twin-stick "arena shooter action." As for the Space Invaders-like Titan Attacks, Curve will distribute the game on 3DS in early 2015 as well. Titan Attacks launched on PlayStation systems earlier this year. Ultratron arrived on Steam in March 2013 and is considered a "throwback" to Vid Kidz' 1982 arcade shooter, Robotron. The game features a "full upgrade system" and adaptive difficulty settings. Ultratron will be Cross-Buy-enabled on PlayStation systems, and is expected to launch in the same week on Wii U and Xbox One. Head past the break to check out a trailer of the game's PC version.   • Resogun sets course for PS Vita

    Arcade-style shooter Resogun will receive a PlayStation Vita version, developer Housemarque confirmed via Twitter today. The Vita port will be handled by Climax Studios, which developed the PS4 and Vita versions of another Housemarque original, Dead Nation. While no release date for the Vita version was given, the developer noted that "more details on the port will soon be released by Sony." Resogun launched alongside the PS4 in November 2013 as a free download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The game's first major "Heroes" expansion arrived this past June and added new survival and demolition modes to the shooter.   • Colorful rail shooter Futuridium jets to PS4, Vita next week

    Stylishly fast shooter Futuridium EP Deluxe will launch next week on PlayStation 4 and Vita. Now slated to launch on Tuesday, September 30, the game will cost $12.49 and will launch at a 20 percent discount ($9.99) for PlayStation Plus members. The game is also Cross-Buy compatible, so those with both systems will only need to pay for it once. Futuridium EP Deluxe locks players in 50 forward-scrolling levels, blasting obstacles to reach five bosses and eventually unlock extra modes. It comes by way of Italian independent developer MixedBag, which first offered a free PC and Mac version of the game in June of last year. The studio confirmed plans to bring the brightly-colored game to PlayStation systems in February. Futuridium EP Deluxe will be compatible with PlayStation TV when it launches on October 14.   • Toki Tori devs ar-rive with new platforming shooter

    Two Tribes announced its latest game today, a "metal wrecking, robot hacking shooter" called Rive. The game is a 2D shooter-meets-platformer with "old school gaming values," in which players blast robotic enemies and alter their enemies' behavior by gathering and installing hacks. Rive's announcement trailer shows the players' tank-like hero of sorts leaping across levels and firing in 360 degrees, emphasizing the game's blend of arcade-style shooting and platforming action. Rive is the first game from the Toki Tori developer following its reboot in January. At that time, Two Tribes cut its team down to just two (now three for the development of Rive), switching its focus to publishing as opposed to development. The developer did create a hi-res Wii U port of Awesomenauts developer Ronimo Games' first game, Swords and Soldiers, which launched in May.   • Rust dev's next game is arcade shooter Riftlight

    Rust developer Facepunch Studios recently revealed its next game, an arcade shooter called Riftlight. The brightly colored game will feature light RPG and looting elements, so players will constantly battle their way through stages and fend off enemies, like giant space squids, to improve their ships and abilities. The developer has three different ship classes planned for the game with varying talents: The traditional Ranged ship, the magical Caster class and the non-shooting Melee class. Riftlight will feature online cooperative multiplayer, in which players can "fly around and kill stuff with 2 or 3 people," and is already playable in its current prototype form. Facepunch wants the game to revolve around randomized level layouts, sections and missions to boost the game's replayability, so that players can charge through the same areas a number of times to collect new items.

  • Savant Ascent mixes arcade shooting with music album, coming to PS4

    The "Savant" in D-Pad Studios' Savant Ascent is drawn from a close friend of the indie developer, electronic musician Savant (Aleksander Vinter). The arcade-style, 2D action shooter's protagonist is even pulled from the cover of Savant's fifth album, Alchemist, designed by D-Pad Studios' art director Simon S. Andersen. Recently announced for PS4, Savant Ascent has players dispatching enemies in tune with Savant's music, which provides varying upgrades as tracks are unlocked. In the game, Savant is cast out of his tower by a "malicious orb," which turns his surroundings into enemies. Players must guide Savant back up the tower, which certainly explains the "Ascent" part of the game's title. Savant Ascent first launched on PC, Mac and Linux via Steam, GamersGate and the Humble Store as well as iOS and Android in December 2013. [Image: D-Pad Studio]

  • Curve Studios leads a Titan Invasion on Sony systems this summer

    Curve Studios will bring a game bundle called Titan Invasion to PS3, PS4 and Vita early this summer. The pack includes two arcade-style games from UK developer Puppygames, Titan Attacks and Revenge of the Titans. Titan Attacks is an arcade shooter in the same vein as Galaga and Space Invaders, though Curve Studios says it includes "modern features, new strategies" as well as online leaderboards and an upgrade system. The game features over 100 levels, spanning five worlds. Puppygames' other creation, Revenge of the Titans, is deemed a thematic sequel that mixes real-time strategy and tower defense elements together. Both Titan Attacks and Revenge of the Titans are available for $9.99 on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux. The Titan Invasion bundle will be Cross-Buy compatible on all three Sony systems.   • Beat and shoot-em-up in former Titanfall, God of War devs' To The Death

    Indie developers Scary Mostro and Section Studios launched their Kickstarter campaign for To The Death today. The game combines beat-em-up and arcade shooter elements together, as players control one of two warriors that are dashing towards one another, hacking away at everything in their path. As To The Death's story goes, the warriors killed each other and are now stuck in The Crawl, a purgatory-like world between life and death. The two studios are led by developers with a deep history in the industry, with To The Death's game design and engineering coming from Scary Mostro's Todd Alderman and Francesco Gigliotti. Both Alderman and Gigliotti are credited as lead designer and engineer respectively at Infinity Ward on the Call of Duty series, and later worked on Titanfall for Respawn Entertainment. Likewise, To The Death's art direction comes from Section Studios Creative Director Cecil Kim, visual development lead for God of War 3. To The Death is in development for PC, Mac and Linux with early access tentatively planned for August. Scary Mostro and Section Studios are seeking $400,000 by February 19 to fund its development.

  • Gravity Crash Ultra blasting to Vita in 2014

    Gravity Crash Ultra, the follow-up to PS3 arcade shooter Gravity Crash, will launch on Vita in 2014. The game is a side-scrolling shooter with 42 levels, running at 60 frames per second, with seven of the levels being new to the Vita version. Developed by Oddworld custodian Just Add Water, Gravity Crash Ultra will also include a level building tool. Players will be able to share levels online with others, as well as with owners of the original PS3 game. Gravity Crash launched in 2009 for PS3 before coming to PSP in July 2010.

    Anticipating a game can be a very dangerous diversion. If you have high hopes for a title, it's easier to find yourself disappointed than satisfied. This is what I was afraid of with Space Invaders Extreme; after drooling over the renovated Taito classic for months on end, I was worried that my expectations would set the bar too high.
