Digital board game Armello is available now on Steam Early Access. Developed by Australian studio League of Geeks, the strategy-RPG hybrid delivers eye candy, with analog gameplay mechanics like cards, dice-rolling combat, along with digital aspects like day/night cycles and an in-depth equipment system. Armello is priced at $20 during this Early Access phase and playable on PC, Mac and Linux. Once development concludes, the game will make its way to iOS and Android, which is how we first saw it at GDC last year. Check out more of the game after the break.

Australian developer League of Geeks has surpassed its funding goal for the hex-based digital board game Armello, ensuring a release next year for PC, iOS, and Android devices. Armello pits clans of woodland creatures against one another in a series of card-based battles. Players manage equipment and character abilities between turns in multiplayer matches, and elements like in-game dice aim to retain the game's tabletop appeal. More than 6,000 backers pledged their support for Armello, pushing the project's funding total to 150% of the team's initial goal. An alpha build will be distributed to eligible backers within the next three to four months, and a beta build is expected to launch in November. [Image: League of Geeks]

Australian indie developer League of Geeks announced the upcoming release of Armello, a digital board game and strategy-RPG hybrid due to launch in 2015 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS. As we previously saw at GDC, gameplay in Armello unfolds in the context of a multiplayer board game with card-based mechanics. Players choose among multiple playable clans, and can forge temporary alliances with other players as they quest for a ruling seat at the royal palace. Defining gameplay components include a day/night cycle, a dice-rolling combat system, and an in-depth equipment system that can be managed between turns. Armello seeks $200,000 AUD to reach its initial funding goal. Ports for Android and Windows tablets are also being considered, pending stretch goal funding. [Video: League of Geeks]

  • Seen@GDC: A board game on an iPad, complete with dice

Armello spent eight months as a paper prototype, and the team at Australian studio League of Geeks did its best to throw the appeal of a board game onto the screen – including the dice. Armello is a turn-based, strategy RPG complete with skill cards and four playable clans: rabbit, rat, bear and wolf. It's in development for PC and mobile. Armello has a rich fantasy backstory and matching 3D art: The king, a lion, has a disease called "rot" and he's going mad, locked inside of his castle and protected by minions, high walls and his own skills. The game supports solo and multiplayer modes, online and local (with multiple devices), and it has a day-night cycle that transforms the battlefield from deep greens to dark purples throughout players' turns. See an example of Armello's hex-based system in another gif below.
