Army Corps of Hell makes a hell of a first impression (sorry). The action-oriented crowd-control gameplay is easy to grasp, and is bolstered by incredible Frazetta-esque artwork and the most ridiculous Japanese metal soundtrack, ranging from squealy-guitar style to grumbly-voice style.Over time, the hellish nature of the PlayStation Vita launch game reveals itself. You do the same tasks over and over again, fighting the same enemies with the same strategies. You see the same artwork after every stage. You're forced to listen to the same metal songs over and over again, sometimes for 20 minutes at a time. What was originally enjoyable becomes a grueling trial in its repetition, much like in that classic work of literature, Treehouse of Horror IV.%Gallery-141984%

If Nathan Drake's Golden Abyss adventure and the future racers of Wipeout 2048 just don't do it for you, perhaps Square Enix's "Pikmin from Hell" can. Army Corps of Hell has just been announced as coming to the Vita on launch day, February 22, for both North America and Europe. Alongside the announcement comes a volley of new screens, which we've dropped into a gallery for you just below. Army Corps of Hell, Square Enix's demonic action-strategy game for Vita, is a launch title in Japan. The publisher announced today that it'll be a launch title in North America too, whenever the North American Vita launch happens. Army Corps of Hell is developed by Entersphere, a company founded by Nintendo expats -- including Motoi Okamoto, who worked on the scripts for both Pikmin games, as well as in direction roles for both Wii Play and Wii Fit, before leaving in 2008. The Pikmin cred is (hopefully) more relevant to this game than Wii Fit.%Gallery-136502%

  • Army Corps of Hell marching on Europe in 2012

Already planning to deploy the Army Corps of Hell in Japan at some point in 2012 via Sony's PlayStation Vita, Square Enix announced this morning that the Pikmin-esque, Entersphere-developed title will also arrive in Europe next year. The game has yet to be announced for release in North America, but localization for Europe indicates that we're not far off from such a reveal. When Joystiq's Richard Mitchell played the title a few weeks back at the Tokyo Game Show, he described it as "Pikmin for adolescent boys who like to doodle on their Trapper Keepers, which isn't a bad thing." Square Enix VP of Brands Sarah Hoeksma, however, takes a different tact in the announcement, saying, "The team at Entersphere is creating a unique experience which will really stand out from the other titles coming to the PlayStation Vita in the launch window." We're guessing, like Nintendo's 3DS "launch window," Sony's planned window is "near the launch of PlayStation Vita." And when will the Vita launch in Europe? At some point in early 2012.

  • Square Enix setting price paradigms on the Vita, close to PSP game prices

Square Enix has announced the price of one of its launch titles for the PS Vita, Army Corps of Hell: The packaged version of the game will hit store shelves for ¥4,980, while the game's downloadable version will cost ¥3,990. Those prices may sound a little high when converted to America-bucks ($64 and $51, respectively), but they fall right in line with the standard PSP game price of ¥4,800, which is similarly decreased for downloadable PSP titles. We're hoping that the standard price for PS Vita games comes in closer to this price point than the one set by Nippon Ichi, which is charging ¥6,090 for Disgaea 3 Return. (You don't even want us to convert that to dollars. It would probably just make you sad.)

  • Army Corps of Hell: Pikminocalypse

Before the PlayStation Vita finally launches, you're going to hear a lot of people referring to Army Corps of Hell as being "like Pikmin." That's precisely how the game is being pitched. When I sat down to try the handheld title at TGS, I was told that it was essentially "Pikmin for adults." Having spent a sizable amount of time with the game, I'm more inclined to think of it as "Pikmin for adolescent boys who like to doodle on their Trapper Keepers." Which isn't a bad thing.
