ASUS DR-900 e-reader escapes into the wild, gets a video overview
Ah, ha! So there it is! After waiting for months and months (and months), it seems as if ASUS has quietly started shipping its ginormous DR-900 e-reader. At least in some sectors of the world, albeit in "non-final" form. Hispazone managed to get their paws around one recently, and they did the world a solid by writing up a lengthy list of impressions and filming a hands-on video (embedded after the break). Critics seemed to admire the build quality, and they felt that the inbuilt web browser certainly has potential. But most of all, they seem concerned about the estimated price; it's bruited that the DR-900 will start shipping to consumers in Q1 2011, but the €300 ($426) asking price probably won't sit well with most. After weeks of hearing about the DR-900 (or DR-950) e-reader, you had to know that we'd sprint (okay, walk at a brisk pace) over to ASUS' booth to finally handle the touchscreen device in person. The 9-inch ebook reader was quite light in hand, and though we didn't have Amazon's Kindle DX with us, it appeared very comparable in size. As far as the reading experience goes, the preloaded text-based PDFs looked crisp on the 1024 x 768 display and as per usual the e-ink display took about a second or two to refresh. Unfortunately, here's where we tell you that the former touch experience was less than stellar -- we had to press quite hard to select the homescreen icons and light finger taps didn't register when we tried to type "engadget" into the address bar. We got the hang of having to press firmly, but we're happy there are the up and down arrows on the right edge for alternate navigation. Perhaps it will all be fixed up once it heads into production, though we don't have details on when that will be. What we do know is that there's a just lovely hands-on video for you after the break. %Gallery-86939%
Joanna Stern03.02.2010ASUS DR-950 to be released in April for a likely £250
ASUS hasn't exactly been tight-lipped about its DR-950 e-reader -- you know, with it outing photos and all -- but apparently the 9-inch E Ink, touchscreen reading device will be ready for buyers in April. ASUS told the guys at Electric Pig that it's currently in process of shopping around for content partners, but plans to have the e-reader to market by springtime with a price tag in the range of £250 (about $354). Not too bad, though it's tough to get too jazzed about a black-and-white model with the OLED color DR-570 version on the horizon.
Joanna Stern01.26.2010ASUS DR-950 touchscreen e-reader spotted in the 'wilds' of ASUS UK's office
Sure, we'd love to be hanging out with this device in person, but we suppose this is second best. ASUS UK has some shots of the upcoming DR-950 e-reader, sporting 9-inches of grayscale SiPix e-paper. It admittedly looks pretty great under these idealized lighting conditions, and the homescreen interface looks simple and oh-so-touchable. Hopefully we get to put the device through its text-to-speech, 3G and ePub paces soon enough. %Gallery-83697%
