Sega has confirmed its Comic-Con 2009 lineup, which will see the first appearance of Iron Man 2. Hopefully, the new title, being developed internally by Sega, will avoid the first's 45 Metacritic score.Beyond that, the company plans to show off Planet 51, Bayonetta and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. The booth number is 5229 and San Diego Comic-Con takes place next week, July 23-26. Don't be shocked by all the game companies in attendance.

Bayonetta has received a release date of October 29 in Japan, reports 1UP. Not only that, but those who pre-order the game in the region will also receive a CD entitled "Rodin's Selection." The soundtrack disc contains ... well, we don't exactly know, but it comes in a neat case, designed to look like a pub menu. We've contacted Sega to see if it's still planning on a simultaneous global release for the game. We'll update if we hear back.

If you enjoyed MadWorld (and are looking forward to Bayonetta), you'll want to take the chance to meet the fine folks behind those games on Friday, July 24. As part of a promotion for Bayonetta, some developers on the title will be on hand to answer your questions about gigantic heels and how effective they are at killing things. And then there are the prizes, with one lucky individual walking away with a custom Xbox 360. This little shindig is not open to the general public, however, and you'll need to be at least 21 years old to enter (like all good things in life), so you'll have to win yourself a ticket. Platinum Games will be running several promotions to award folks with tickets, but you can enter right now by following these steps: Make sure you can be in San Diego that day (transportation is on you) Become a fan of PlatinumGames on Facebook Shoot an email over to littleangels@platinumgames.com with a link to your Facebook profile You better get on it, because the deadline to enter is 11:59p.m. ET on July 13. Good luck!

  • 'Wuhhh!!' See Bayonetta without its visual effects

The latest post on the Platinum Games blog comes from an employee named Kudo, who is currently working on effects for Bayonetta. To explain what that means, he demonstrated what Bayonetta looks like both with and without effects in two video clips, embedded after the break. The fog, flashes of gunfire, and ... ethereal purple mist are all surprisingly important to the look of the game! Discussing another effect, Kudo recounts a rather amusing encounter with producer Hideki Kamiya. Kamiya decided that he wanted Bayonetta's blood following an attack to appear as a rose, because, " If it isn't pretty, then it isn't Bayonetta!!" He then went on to physically, and vocally, demonstrate Bayonetta's damage animation. "She just goes, 'Wuhhh!!'" Kamiya said. "You know... 'Wuhhh!!'" You can see footage of the results of that meeting after the break as well.

E3 was brütal! If you blinked, for a split/second, you missed something. Even if you were trine to keep up, it was a blur -- staying a.wake like that, you only pushed yourself to the brink of your own dark void. That's where Joystiq comes in; to crackdown on the madness; to reach out ... with conviction -- phew! Crysis averted. We've scoured the dark corners and survived the inferno to piece together this roundup of all things Xbox at E3. Why? Just 'cause we love you. So, draw nier and shift your eyes past the break.

So we're Bayonetta in this city and we're kicking monsters and shooting things with our boot guns and all of a sudden this giant statue comes to life we're dodging and our clothes are disappearing and then there's lava everywhere so we run on the skyscrapers and fight angels and we're chased by a tsunami and then we're in a cathedral and there's a dragon coming through the window and we're fighting it and then it lifts off and it's flying and the cathedral is flying and everybody's flying and fighting and shooting and what is going on. %Gallery-22955%

While Joystiq sends bloggers to E3 for teh newz, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon sends Jason Sudeikis for teh lawls, as the latest episode of the late-night program shows. Available to watch right now on Hulu, highlights include Jason's brief stop by the Bayonetta area at Sega's booth, and a rather hilarious exchange with Infinity Ward about Modern Warfare 2. It's quality entertainment, and Sudeikis does a good job of making lighthearted fun of a show that we worked so hard to cover super seriously this week. Enjoy.[Thanks, Wesley!]

  • Bayonetta: Not just for the 'hardcore maniac player'

Well, that's a relief. Having previously expressed his desire to make Bayonetta "sadistically hard," director Hideki Kamiya was ready to address our concern that the game might turn off less dedicated gamers. Shortly after demonstrating some of the game's absurd action, Kamiya told us (via translator) that the over-the-top insanity and brutal difficulty stemmed from personal taste -- this is the kind of game he likes to play! However, Kamiya acknowledged that he won't be the only one to play it, and has added both "easy" and "very easy" modes, which introduce less complex combo controls. You'll be able to experience Bayonetta's dazzling attacks and mad set pieces without having to be a "hardcore maniac player," he explained. We'll be playing on hard, by the way. Ahem.

  • Bayonetta's E3 trailer is absolutely insane

We can barely follow all of the crazy-fast action going on in this Bayonetta trailer. We know it's an action game, but we didn't know it was an action game fueled by crack cocaine. Hmm, maybe the suplexing of dragons should have given away the drug-addled puppetmaster pulling at the title's strings?Regardless, if you find yourself able to keep up with all of the crazy action going on here, then you should probably check to see if you're Sonic the Hedgehog.

  • Video: In Bayonetta, your middle finger is also a key

What do monsters made entirely of hair, gratuitous poses and flaming middle fingers all have in common? They can all be found in the latest trailer for Bayonetta. It seems that every time we get a brand-new glimpse of Platinum Games' action title, it always manages to up the ante on the craziness. Last time, it was all about giving dragons suplexes. Now? Our leading lady uses her flaming purple middle finger to power up her motorcycle. But it's not all about the absurd; there's also key info on Bayonetta's story to absorb ... which is, okay, rather absurd as well. A new blonde baddie was revealed in the trailer and it looks like she'll be our heroine's main rival. Check all of it out in the clip after the break. But please, try to maintain your sanity.Source: EurogamerSource: Buttonbasher

  • Bayonetta and the importance of enemy animation

    by
    Richard Mitchell

Over on the Platinum Games website, an animator by the name of Eijiro has posted a short article concerning the development of animations for the enemies in Bayonetta. The article discusses the ways that enemy animations help engage players in the action and also the role that animations play in a game's difficulty. Using some sample animations, Eijiro states that enemies often have a tell that is used prior to an attack, which gives players a small window to decide how to react, whether it be by countering or dodging the impending strike. As Eijiro notes, if this window is too long, the engagement is lost because the player feels no danger. If it's too short, the game becomes too difficult for the average player. Most gamers probably have an intrinsic understanding of the principles mentioned in the article, but it's worth reading for a more detailed understanding of a game design aspect that's easy to overlook. After all, if it's done right, you shouldn't notice it at all.

The Bayonetta blog in Japan posted something pretty interesting recently: A prototype video showing the game's heroine in her earliest days, fighting generic baddies in a sealed room. The blog post says this video comes from the game's first month of development, which says a lot for the title because oh man we would totally play this early build like crazy. If you think she looks graceful in the latest trailers, then you're sure to enjoy watching her first few kills ever.%Gallery-22955%[Via GameSetWatch]
