  • Tim Cook: China Mobile deal a 'watershed,' and more news for January 15, 2014

This Friday, the iPhone goes on sale at China Mobile -- the largest mobile carrier in the world. And it seems everyone is very, very happy about that. Speaking to CNBC in Beijing where Tim Cook is for the launch, he said this Friday's launch "is a watershed day ... It's a huge announcement ... we're incredibly impressed with them; we have deep respect for them. We see this as bringing the world's best smartphone to the very largest and now the fastest network in China." Since China Mobile preorders began in December, the mobile carrier is selling a whopping 60,000 units a day, which equals more than 1.3 million iPhones sold between December 25 and January 13. With the China Mobile deal, Apple will be able to sell iPhones in more than 3,000 new locations in China, including many new cities where the iPhone just isn't available now. Going on further press rounds about the China Mobile launch, Cook told The Wall Street Journal that he is "incredibly optimistic" about the launch and said of the carrier: "We've gotten to know each other ... today is a beginning, and I think there are lots more things our companies can do together in the future." In other news: Black Sabbath's 1970's albums are now available on iTunes. Warner Brothers has brought eight of the band's albums from the 1970s exclusively to iTunes this week. Previously only the bands later albums were available. You can view the albums here. An anti-poaching class-action lawsuit against Apple, Google and others will proceed. The Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that more than 64,000 workers will be able to sue Apple, Google, Adobe, Intel and other tech companies for allegedly conspiring to keep pay down so workers wouldn't jump ship from one company to the next. A hacker group called The 1775 Sec has said they've breached an Apple database and posted user's personal information to the web. However, this is the same group that claimed responsibility for Dropbox's downtime earlier this month -- something which was found to be untrue. Finally, is it a Mac Pro or is it a trash can? Whatever it is, it's got amazing reviews.

  • Report: Guitar Hero 6 dropping playable musicians, will work with previous DLC

Details about the upcoming sixth iteration in the Guitar Hero series (that is, if you don't count various spin-offs) have begun landing on the web from Official Xbox Magazine UK, reports GoNintendo. As Kiss' Gene Simmons proclaimed earlier this year, it seems he'll be emceeing the game. Alongside his appearance, Queen, Black Sabbath and Metallica's Lars Ulrich will also be showing up, though rather than being featured as playable characters, the various rockers will be recruitable characters for guidance through the game's campaign ("Quest Mode") -- that whole multiple lawsuit thing certainly couldn't have hurt Activision's decision, right? Maybe most important of all is the inclusion of legendary New York City club CBGB (& OMFUG) as the game's "only real-world location" (at least to this former CBGB attendee), but we suppose you're probably more interested in hearing that "previous DLC" will allegedly be playable in number six ... or whatever. Activision wouldn't confirm the details with us, but you OXM UK subscribers are welcome to re-confirm the report's legitimacy in our comments section below. [Via MTV Multiplayer]

  • It's a dim Friday for Guitar Hero Black Sabbath DLC

Were you looking forward to playing some Black Sabbath songs in Guitar Hero 5 this weekend? Of course you were -- that sounds awesome. Anyway, it's not going to happen. (And, it's certainly not happening for you either, Band Heroes -- whoever you are.) Before the scheduled Thursday release of three tracks from Black Sabbath's Master of Reality album, Activision announced on its Guitar Hero Facebook page that the DLC wouldn't make its appointed release date, and added, "We hope to have the content available for download at a later date, so stay tuned!" We were going to say, maybe the DLC was turned into steel in a great magnetic field, but, unfortunately, Iron Man isn't one of the songs in the pack. (Although, it would appear we just said it anyway.) We're checking in with Activision to find out what happened.

  • Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero: February DLC

Things took a step towards the alternative in last month's Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero DLC offerings, but it seems February will see the games' downloadable music get back on the path of straight-up rock. We'll be seeing new (old) jams from 30 Seconds to Mars, Breaking Benjamin, Third-Eye Blind and Black Sabbath. We personally can't wait to see Taylor Swift cover Ozzy's part on "Sweet Leaf." All track packs will be available for $5.49 on PS3, 550 Wii Points or 440 on Xbox 360. In addition, all songs will be available seperately for $1.99, 200 Wii Points or 160. Head past the break for the complete list of February's downloadable songs.

  • Rumor: Ozzy Osbourne at BlizzCon?

This is still rumor central here, but according to Zakk Wylde's Twitter account, we might be seeing a level of rock heads and tails above what Level 70 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain can offer at this year's BlizzCon. We might be getting Ozzy Freaking Osbourne.Wylde's Tweet made it sound like he was surprised to hear the news (well, other news, but considering this was said in the same e-breath...), as if he heard it through the grapevine himself. Combine that with the fact that Ozzy at BlizzCon is such an absurdly amazing notion and you get one skeptical blogger. Still, I'd love to see it. Think of the possibilities! Ozzy and the crew doing L80ETC's I Am Murloc? ...Wait, actually, that would be hella lame. Let's pretend I never said that. I'm pretty okay with Ozzy doing his usual thing.Considering this news came from Zakk Wylde's Twitter account, I feel it necessary to link this picture he posted a few days ago, posing with his new guitar.[Thanks for the tip, Centipede!]

According to X3F, who heard it from Megatonik, who saw it on ScoreHero, who cribbed it from scans on GameFaqs, OXM like totally printed all the Rock Band DLC for March in its new issue. We've confirmed the tracks are revealed in an advertisement for Xbox Live that was placed by Microsoft. There's no mention of prices, but if March releases follow the general trend, it should be 440 MS points ($5.50) for a pack and 160 MS point ($2) for a single song.Week of March 4: Thrash Pack Blinded By Fear - At The Gates Thrasher - Evile Shadow World - Haunted Week of March 11: Shooting Star - Bad Company *Cover* Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd Message In A Bottle - Police Week of March 18: Nine Inch Nails Pack March Of The Pigs The Collector The Perfect Drug Week of Mar. 25: Metal Pack Wrathchild - Ironmaiden *Cover* Supernaut - Black Sabbath *Cover* Fuel - Metallica That's great ... now about February?Update: An MTV/Harmonix spokesperson tells Shacknews this is a tentative schedule, saying, "Please stay tuned for confirmation of Rock Band DLC closer to their release."[Via X3F]

  • Rock Band Weekly: Enjoy the Black Sabbath

Before he became everybody's favorite patriarch, Ozzy Osbourne and the band Black Sabbath had the classic heavy metal mystique of pure evil around them. Unless you detect a similar evil emanating from downloadable songs, you'll want to check out this week's Rock Band offerings on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. We're trying a little something different this week and dropping in videos after the break, just in case you're unfamiliar with the songs:Black Sabbath Pack - $5.50: N.I.B. ($2 *Cover*) Sweet Leaf ($2 *Cover*) War Pigs ($2 *Cover*) The perfect solution would be to have a short video montage of the DLC from the game, but there's currently no preview like that available (please take note, EA/MTV/Harmonix).

  • Rock Band gets Black Sabbath DLC

Today is Rock Band downloadable content Tuesday and that could only mean one thing ... we get new Rock Band downloadable content! This week's DLC offerings include a few cover songs (yes, icky cover songs) from Black Sabbath including "N.I.B.", "Sweet Leaf" and the ever-so-awesome "War Pig" which are available a la carte for 160 Microsoft points each or bundled together for 440 points. But come on Ozzy, what's up with the cover songs mate? The covers just aren't worthy of the Black Sabbath name. The covers aren't worthy!
