Besides having one of, if not, the best product showings at CES 2008, iriver also had one of the most high-tech booths. Gone were the booth babes and ignorant product hacks -- replaced instead by virgin-white cases and interactive displays which allowed their products to speak for themselves. Fortunately, we also had the chance to confirm one of the most peculiar icon choices in CE history: the raised-dog icon on their S7... yes, he's really treating the booth like his own personal fire hydrant. • RIM's CES 2008 booth tour

No matter where we go, RIM seems to have this same booth style where all the good stuff (the phones, that is) are stuffed in a central nucleus, causing massive crowding. Don't get us wrong, it's entirely possible that's the effect RIM is shooting for, but heaven help us poor journalists try to get a shot of the goods contained within. The Canadian manufacturer didn't have any earth-shattering announcements for the show -- just a couple of new 8130 colors -- so the highlight has to be the giant Pearl that was harassing passers-by. We'll be honest, Mustek -- you're not exactly giving us a lot to work with. First you don't release any PR on your new products, then when we get to the booth, you seem unsure if you've even got new products. Of course, we did manage to find your suspiciously-Sharp-ish Blu-ray player, a new widgetified photo frame, and that lovely iPod dock. Check out our "tour" and see for yourself.%Gallery-13386%

Blu-ray's booth was a drastic change from their red neighbors; people were in line for swag, watching demos, playing with BD Live, and taking pictures with Homer and the huge pirate ship. We tried a little BD gaming as well, but we think we'll stick to just watching the movie. We did catch a glimpse of Panasonic's automotive Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD in dash display and let us tell you, we were impressed -- seriously you can see a difference even on a 7-inch screen.%Gallery-13361%

HD DVD and Blu-ray had their booths right next to each other and as you might expect the amount of traffic was night and day. As you can see in the pictures, the HD DVD booth was pretty desolate, but the seating at the stage was full of people watching the demonstration. We also tried to say hello to our friends in press relations, but like many people this late in the show, they already left. Gallery: HD DVD booth tour

Although DISH network's press conference is a little boring because they don't over sensationalize their news, we were impressed with their announcements. More HD channels and more local HD markets are always a good thing and although there were only eleven markets announced at the show, the map at the booth shows many more markets, that we hope is accurate. We also snapped a few pics of the new hardware.%Gallery-13355%

When we heard NBC would be recording NBC Nightly news on the show floor of CES, we wanted to stop by and learn what it takes to produce a remote HD newscast, but unfortunately the PR team never got back to us about access, so instead we took a few pics -- including pictures of Brian Williams preparing for the show. In addition, they had kiosks setup, and using a free 2GB USB memory stick you could download NBC Universal content -- locked down with WM DRM of course.%Gallery-13351%

In terms of layout, UTStarcom's booth is close to a dead ringer for its showing at last year's CES; just the promos and handsets have changed, basically. The darlings of the show have to be the HSM180, an absolutely bizarre HSDPA candybar featuring two circles for a keypad, and the TXT8010, a QWERTY slider with an attitude for CDMA networks. Despite the shadow of justifiable hype cast by Panasonic's 150-inch TV, Pioneer's 9-mm thin and "extreme contrast" prototype plasmas, Samsung still managed to make a respectable (yet quiet) showing at CES 2008. After all, it's not every day we see a pair of 31- and 14-inch OLED TVs, a touch-screen RTS-A1100 Media Center beauty, and 82-inch quadHD and 52-inch Ultra Slim LCDs. They've even tamed their usual push of "world's first, fastest, biggest, etc." boasting... a bit. But hey, it wouldn't be Samsung if they didn't crow a little.%Gallery-13272%

Xohmigod, it's the Xohm booth at CES 2008! The booth itself was pretty small and unremarkable, but cut these guys some slack, they haven't even had a commercial launch yet. There were a handful of test devices on display with Xohm modems integrated, including a trick little gaming device with a slide-out control pad, an ASUS Eee, an OQO Model 02, and a couple of data cards. Xohm's open structure allows for all sorts of bizarre, independent devices to hook up to the network, so with any luck, this is exactly the kind of variety we should see after the launch gets official.%Gallery-13163%

Let's get this straight: Lebedev by no means only does the Optimus Maximus, and his studio is one of the most prolific design firms in Russia. But Art and his crew were at CES for one reason, and one reason alone -- not that we have a problem with that. Don't forget to check out our Optimus Maximus video.%Gallery-13143%

As sleepy as Microsoft and Intel's booths were this year, they paled in comparison to AMD's showing. Situated in what was essentially a thruway / food court, the sad little cube that was the chipmaker's booth made us feel generally bad. Hey -- it's possible they're just not too worried about CES, and that's fine -- with no new products, announcements, or partnerships to speak of, maybe they're just taking it easy.%Gallery-13149%

Just in case you didn't get your fill of Audiovox from our liveblog of Monday's press conference, we've got a full booth tour for your to feast your eyes on, featuring new products from the 'Vox along with family members Jensen, RCA, TERK, and Acoustic Research. Sure, these companies might not produce the flashiest or most popular devices on the market, but what they lack in panache they make up for in affordability -- and in a few cases, as we noticed during our tour, unique functionality. Hit the link below for the full walkthrough, including a shot of a special Engadget fan.

HP has an absolutely massive booth at this year's CES -- everything from tablets to cameras to printer supplies has an elaborate installation. We caught up with the oft-delayed iPaq 200 and 300-series PDAs, totally befuddled a PR person by asking him when the tx2000 tablet would get capacitive touch (he just kept repeating "It has a digitizer!" until we backed away slowly), and hid behind a printing display while two MediaSmart TV reps had an exasperated conversation about how to answer the apparently-constant question "Why should anyone buy this instead of a real TV?" There was also one lonely Compaq desktop. Check it all out in the gallery? %Gallery-13133%

So we rolled into XStreamHD's booth hoping to get some more details on the newcomer to the HD satellite field. Lo and behold, we didn't find a lot of clues at the booth. The press conference announced a working demo of 1080p content at the booth, so we were more than a little crushed when we showed up and there was nothing to be seen. Although the outer dimensions remain unchanged, Nokia's CES booth is considerably larger in usable square footage this year compared to last because some of its private meeting space has been jettisoned to a location elsewhere in the convention. They've used the extra space well, too; in addition to several areas where passers-by can handle the latest phones, there's a long, wrapping counter for demoing what Nokia calls its "experiences" -- things like the Music Store, for example. Check out all the pretty colors in the gallery over on Engadget!

Another year, another Microsoft booth. Truth be told, nothing really too exciting was going on with the cats from Redmond. Sure, they had their Zunes, PCs, and all manner of Windows-powered devices, but it just seemed a little... flat. Maybe it's the specter of Gates' final keynote haunting the scene. Dell has a surprisingly small presence at CES this year -- Billy Bob Thornton actually had more floor space to do...something than any of Dell's actual products. Regardless, we still managed to get some hands-on time with the high-res XPS M1530, the Inspiron 1525, the nerdtastic WoW XPS m1730, and that sweet Alienware curved DLP display -- which we got some exclusive details on.
