On top of the previously announced three new online modes to be introduced in Burnout Paradise's so-called "Cagney" software update, developer Criterion has revealed that the forthcoming download will also level the pavement between the open-world racer's two console versions, finally bringing custom soundtracks to Burnout Paradise for the PS3.After the update, PS3 owners will be able to get at their own music using the game's Easy Drive in-game menu, allowing them to cycle through their own collection of tunes while trying to avoid careening into oncoming traffic. Even better, this update, welcome as it is, is just one of several Criterion has planned this year, ensuring many repeat visits to the junk yard in the months ahead.

  • Burnout Paradise custom soundtracks to come in Cagney update

While we're still waiting on the Bogart update, we're already hearing good things about the future Cagney update. One such major inclusion in Cagney is the ability to play custom soundtracks while cruising Paradise City.To play a custom soundtrack, all a player needs to do is enter the Easydrive menu, go to "Soundtrack," and then hit "Custom." This will bring up an XMB page where they can select songs to play in modes like shuffle, repeat, or by group. While this feature is a welcomed addition, the Cagney update has yet to find a fixed release date. This means that the ability to play custom music is, well, still a promise that's far off. The Bogart update is only releasing this April 24 but was revealed way back at the beginning of March. If we can expect to see a similar timeframe, Cagney could still be a month or two away.

  • Burnout Paradise Bogart Update hits early

It seems Criterion isn't any kind of slouch with their downloadable content, it's free, it's coming more often and they've been keeping us informed about it. Now they're doing us one better and releasing their "Bogart" update early. So early that it's online now in fact. The Bogart update contains a whole host of little things, and shouldn't be confused with the Cagney update that includes the new game modes (what's with the old-school actor names anyway?). Bogart huh? We'll take it: "Here's looking at you, kid" now g'won, get downloading.

Over on Criterion Games' official website, they posted details about some new game modes that are headed to Burnout Paradise in the near future as part of the game's Cagney update which shouldn't be confused with next week's Bogart update. The three new Freeburn game modes showcased (other new additions will be announced in the future) are Online Stunt Run, Online Road Rage and Online Marked Man. We conveniently posted a description of each Freeburn game mode after the break for your reading enjoyment, but we must say that Online Road Road seems like a crash fest of fun where teamwork is rewarded by seeing chunks of car peel from your opponents' car body as if they were part of an orange rind. Criterion promises more Cagney update info and new Freeburn race modes sometime soon'ish.

With about seven days until Burnout Paradise's second update, codenamed Bogart, and just over a week since promising to transform the game's crash-centric Paradise City through a series of downloadable content updates, Criterion has announced that it is currently kicking the tires on three new FreeBurn game modes, adding online flavor to Stunt Run, Road Rage, and Marked Man. According to Criterion, the online variants of both Stunt Run and Road Rage will support up to eight players at a time, while the number of drivers supported by Marked Man has not yet been specified. The trio of modes will be lumped in with the first of three previously announced expansion islands, codenamed "Cagney," and while no release date has been announced Criterion has confirmed that we can expect all three to pull up to the stoplight over "the next 12 months."

Criterion's Burnout Paradise is one of the rare breed to continue expanding long after the game's original release. Three new gameplay modes are being prepped for release soon, but it's just the beginning for this open-world racing game. Jino Talens from EA notes that "this is just the start – we aim to bring you many new Freeburn game modes covering different themes and play styles. Over the next 12 months, we're going to transform the Burnout Paradise you know and love into the Burnout Paradise you only ever dreamed of!" That's a rather ambitious promise, but consider our interest piqued. For details on the three new Freeburn game modes (Road Rage, Marked Man and Stunt Run), check after the break.%Gallery-12560%

  • Burnout Paradise's Bogart patch out on April 24

Do you remember about a month ago we posted that a Burnout Paradise patch was coming? Back then we didn't have a set date for when the patch would go live; however, we do now. April 24, mark that day off on your calendar Paradise players so you won't be surprised when you need to make an update. Not much has changed since we first reported it -- save for the patch name changing to codename "Bogart." All the promised fixes are still the same. If you need an extra reminder of what they are, then read them right here.

After perusing the lengthy list of fixes and "game experience enhancements" contained in Criterion's second update for Burnout Paradise – codenamed: Bogart – we're not sure how to respond. Should we applaud the new age of connected consoles, where increasingly sophisticated games can (and are!) patched and tweaked, smoothing out the ragged edges until all that remains is a shiny, smooth pebble? Or decry the now all-too-common practice of ship first, patch later? Reality is probably somewhere in between, so we're happy that Criterion is making the effort with an already very well received game. The update includes everything from from "high priority" fixes to the "top 10 problems" identified by users. Fixes seem to be concentrated on online functionality and some interesting balancing tweaks; for example, Criterion explains, "We fixed Head-on Takedowns as these seemed generally unfair and unrealistic. Unfair low speed Takedowns have now been eradicated." Bogart pulls into the XBL and PSN filling stations on April 24, about seven weeks after the first patch.

  • Burnout Paradise Auto-Update on April 24th

    04.09.2008

When Burnout Paradise originally launched the game's community as a whole was rather divided, and many who decried the game hoped that Criterion would eventually patch in some sort of changed features. If you were one of those fanboys however, then you'll be disappointed come the end of the month (April 24) and the release of the game's next major AU. Game downloads have been given interesting names lately and Paradise continues the trend, handing their auto-update the totally unnecessary name of "Bogart." The list of fixes and changes is long and we won't list everything here, so you'll have to head on over to Criterion's dev blog. Enhanced 360 streaming performance stops instances where the game seems to pause for a second or so. Fixed Head-on Takedowns as these seemed generally unfair and unrealistic. Unfair low speed Takedowns have been removed. Increase the # of search results returned for online games. Increase Picture Paradise timer so it doesn't kick in so quickly Fixed rich presence updating issues. Fixed some online race start points which started all the players facing in the wrong direction Fixed a drifting and boosting bug. There wasn't any real control on the brake so players would grind around the walls of the corners. And tons more.

  • Burnout Paradise sells One Million copies

The devs over at Criterion must be happy, their game was received well, their upcoming DLC is looking good and Burnout Paradise, their newest game, has sold over a million units. Now whether you liked the gameplay changes that were introduced or not, this is definitely good news. Selling a million copies in the gaming world almost guarantees a sequel, and this should give Criterion the chance to smooth over any bumps in their game formula. And, not only did Burnout Paradise sell a million units, but those sales pushed the total for the entire Burnout series to over 15 million pieces of software sold. Congrats Criterion, keep up the good work!

It has been some time since we got anything out of Criterion about their DLC. The last big news was that some the islands available for download would be free, with no mention of what the islands would be like or what would happen on them. Well since the opening of their dev blog was designed to rectify situations like this, the team posted two new videos giving a brief glimpse of the island and the ride there. From the only released image we can tell that Criterion is going for a slick vacation feel and the first video is an eye in the sky view that gives us an idea of the size that Criterion has in mind (big!). The second video is a bit longer than the first and showcases the Dust Storm's journey into and around the city, giving us an on-the-ground feel for the size (again, big!).The second video can be found after the break.

  • Burnout Paradise will 'transform,' Criterion vows

We're most certainly taking Criterion's promise to "TRANSFORM" Burnout Paradise through a series of content updates too literally in our rendering above, but the developer's added emphasis just begs, What if...? Not one for serialized numbers, Criterion has chosen nicknames for its upcoming expansion islands, which will be distributed in this order: "Cagney," then "Davis," and then "Eastwood." We're assuming that the absence of a "Bay" upgrade essentially puts to rest our interpretation of Paradise transformed, but it doesn't mean Criterion won't consider our pitch. "We want to know what you think and you better believe we're listening to what you have to say," Criterion states on its blog. So, you listening?

It seems the borders between video game culture and other forms of popular culture are melting away. Wyclef Jean recently teamed up with Electronic Arts to feature bits of Burnout Paradise in a new music video. The result? Well, it's a neat concept to be sure. Having Wyclef Jean driving a car while a kid is "controlling" him is pretty fun. If only we could control some of our friends while they were driving, huh?

  • Burnout Paradise gets free DLC with 'different' gameplay

Criterion is expanding the world of Paradise City. Creative director Alex Ward has revealed that new cars will be available for both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. However, the more significant news comes in the introduction of new islands to the game. Even better: the DLC will cost a pretty zero dollars. Free. The way DLC used to be. We like it that way. Each of the islands will offer "a different type of gameplay," but what that means is unclear for now. We're assuming that the islands will still involve cars and racing -- we think. The islands will be free, mandatory software updates so that everyone will be able to access the new content when it goes live. The cars, on the other hand, will have to be paid for.[Via Joystiq]

Fantastic news for Burnout Paradise fans who were looking forward to the upcoming "Islands" downloadable content. We just learned that the content is going to be offered for free! Criterion's own Alex Ward jumped onto their official forums to confirm that the upcoming Island DLC will be a free download and will add new locations as well as new vehicles to the mix. But don't get used to receiving free Burnout Paradise DLC, as Ward make it clear that other DLC releases in the future will be paid content. No worries now though, because we have free DLC headed our way, new vehicles to crash and new bridges to burn.[Via EuroGamer]

Talk of new downloadable content for Burnout Paradise has been burbling around the Criterion Games website. On the forums, creative director Alex Ward has revealed that new cars will be made available as downloadable content in both the Xbox 360 and PS3 version. More exciting, though, is news of the expansion of Paradise City, with the introduction of several islands to the map. Perhaps even more exciting, however, is news that the islands will be offered as a free update to the game.Details are still scarce at this point, but Alex Ward states that bridges from the main section of Paradise City will lead out to the new islands, each of which will offer "a different type of gameplay." Whether this means that islands will depart from the open-ended style of Paradise, or whether the terrain of each will be suited to certain play styles remains to be seen. The islands themselves will be offered as free, mandatory software updates, while the new cars will be sold via the traditional microtransaction system.

  • Zero Punctuation burns through Burnout Paradise

[AS ALWAYS WITH ZP, VIDEO IS NSFW!] With his usual fast mouth and lack of any sort of restraint, Yahtzee of the Zero Punctuation reviews is back this week with a review of Burnout Paradise. He doesn't spend much time on the things that the fanboys were concerned with on forums; choosing instead to focus on the quirky aspects of the game and genre. Issues such as the nature of the street racer, the lack of human life, the mini-map and the design philosophy are all open to him ans he attacks with vigor. Now readers, don't forget that this is all for fun, if you disagree do your best to move on. He's ripped all of our favorite games a new one.

Today's Zero Punctuation video is arguably the funniest yet. Yahtzee takes on Burnout Paradise and, while it isn't really clear whether he actually likes it or not, you won't care because of all the laughing you'll be doing. In reviewing Burnout Paradise Yahtzee manages to extract a storyline from the game that doesn't exist, but really, really should. The very NSFW video can be seen above and, as usual, we agree with practically everything the man says. Enjoy!

Zero Punctuation takes a spin in Burnout Paradise this week and discovers that cars have taken over Paradise City and people are nowhere to be found. The main sticking point Yahtzee has with the game is that while Burnout Paradise has an open world like Grand Theft Auto, requiring the player to look at a map during a high-speed chase is a bit awkward. He realizes the game isn't designed for him, but rather for people who don't have time to play games and are too busy having carnal relations. This week's NSFW review of Burnout Paradise, involving a joke about female menstruation and biscuit mutilation, can be found after the break.[Thanks, Sam]

  • Kid gets mooned on Burnout Paradise

So here is another one of those "blame videogames for screwing up our kids" kind of stories. This time, a British tween had the unfortunate run-in with a picture of a crude gamer's buttocks in Burnout Paradise. Apparently, the takedown pics that get swapped every time a player gets knocked out didn't feature the gamer's face, but his unlovable backside -- yes, the dimples were on the other cheeks. You naughty Paradise players ... what are you guys doing? Seriously though, the kid isn't traumatized or anything like that but the story was picked up by CBS TV which linked the story with online pedophile practices -- something completely out of context with the issue at hand. The point here folks, don't go doing something so brash; your actions may be interpreted and misunderstood by others so much so that it may land you in trouble. Just keep it fun and clean. While this story would probably make parents more cautious about gaming, it isn't as bad as another recent controversy. [Via Google News]
